What's the most stuck up place you've been to?

Having just recently seen a video of a young man doing a video of Farnham on TikTok saying it's Tory and stuck up etc.

I was wondering if you've come across any town that has had stuck up people and what was your thoughts on such a place?

Has anyone mentioned Southwold? Nowhere to eat without ridiculously pretentious descriptions of the meals, so many rules about what you can and can’t do and you can’t move for men wearing coloured chinos with sweaters draped over their shoulders.

It’s not even picturesque so other than proximity to commuter belt for London I don’t get the attraction.

What?! How?!! @whatsyourpoison12

Rarely laugh out loud at mumsnet but did at this one!

awaynboilyurheid · 13/04/2023 21:32

Sorry it was at someone saying Blackpool

proppy · 13/04/2023 21:32

Most of London :)

As a Londoner I do protest, the stuck up ones are from the home counties & just moved to London for a bit, giving us a bad name!

twinmum2007 · 13/04/2023 21:32

That's my happy place. I love it there. Never had an issue.

Blackheath, Harpenden, St Albans, Bournemouth, Taunton (likes to be but is not) ..

I'm origionally from Shrewsbury which is a lovely town and I miss it. People who call it 'Shrowsberry' are not natives and shouldn't be allowed in.

I pronounce it that way but I was forced to move there from southwest London when I was 17 and that is the way it is pronounced by a southerner I think!

Blackheath I concur with, my parents went to bohemian/political social events there when I was a child and I had to hang out with the obnoxious offspring in the garden!

Eastleigh in hampshire. Lived there 5 years and no one spoke to me. Hideous place. Beastly Eastleigh was the nickname, so I wasn't alone

Eastleigh is a shithole though. They probably thought you were too posh for them.

AgrathaChristie · 13/04/2023 21:35

Where I live right now, mentioned a couple of times upthread. Thinks it’s soooooo posh and superior and really it isn’t. It’s probably the most boring place ever with the most pretentious, stuck up people ever. . I have a little cry each day as I search RightMove.

A baby sensory class in Harpenden. It was typical "wave scarf at baby then stick a pot of thyme in their face". No one spoke to me. DS was 10 weeks old and alternated between feeding and crying the whole way through. One of the other mums looked at me pityingly and told me in a loud voice that her DD had loved the class ever since she started coming at eight weeks old.

I have thought of many witty comebacks in the 13 years since then but at that moment I decided the class wasn't for me.

Sounds awful!!

Littleguggi · 13/04/2023 21:36

Witney and other parts of Oxfordshire

FlatterNow · 13/04/2023 21:37

I like Holt! Its ridiculous poshness is part of the charm, I think. We used to go there on a trip from Cromer and goggle at the prices in Bakers and Larners, then go to a café and eat an enormous scone. Never got treated in an unfriendly way that I can recall, even when DS filled his nappy expansively and obviously during one of the café trips.

Itakecreaminmycoffee · 13/04/2023 21:37

I've been to lots of the places mentioned here and haven't found any of them "stuck up".

I think people feeling somewhere is stuck up or posh often comes from having an inferiority complex or that they don't fit in there.

Also, why would a stand-alone incident from one rude person make you label the whole place as stuck up? That's silly, there are rude people everywhere - a lot of you have just been unlucky to experience a nasty individual which has given you bad feels about the whole place.

Georgiepud · 13/04/2023 21:37

Another vote for Harrogate.

You would't have thought a really posh woman would be working as a barmaid would you?

Cool story though.

Are you joking? All the posh people I know have worked in a bar! It’s what you do at uni.

taleasolasgrime · 13/04/2023 21:37

Any David Lloyd club.

Germolenequeen · 13/04/2023 21:37

@Greensleevevssnotnose

What quantifies posh? Young farmers in Cirencester was full of hooray Henries in the 80s does that count

Yes.... the first place I thought of was Cirencester College (in 1981) 😆

Ditto Sandhurst College - in particular the Cavalry Regiments 🙄

eldora · 13/04/2023 21:38

I don’t know about stuck up, I live in London and have experienced racism in Uxbridge and Staines. Thankfully I’ve no need to return.

proppy · 13/04/2023 21:39

What does stuck up actually mean?
being standoffish & believing you're superior, what do you think it means?

Madamecastafiore · 13/04/2023 21:40

Aldeburgh if that's how you spell it. It's where Harry Enfield got his character that runs the shop with expensive shit in it from I'm sure.
