What's the most stuck up place you've been to?

Having just recently seen a video of a young man doing a video of Farnham on TikTok saying it's Tory and stuck up etc.

I was wondering if you've come across any town that has had stuck up people and what was your thoughts on such a place?

I've been to lots of the places mentioned here and haven't found any of them "stuck up".

I think people feeling somewhere is stuck up or posh often comes from having an inferiority complex or that they don't fit in there.

Also, why would a stand-alone incident from one rude person make you label the whole place as stuck up? That's silly, there are rude people everywhere - a lot of you have just been unlucky to experience a nasty individual which has given you bad feels about the whole place.

I've quoted a specific incident as an example, but I named the place based on the experience of living there for several years. I assume many other posters have done the same.

Feeling somewhere is stuck up or posh often comes from having been on the receiving end of a whole raft of assholery and bad manners rather than an inferiority complex.

Hated York.

Full of nothing but rude entitled people.

The locals are fine. It’s the incomers who’ve get their heads up their posteriors.

Aldeburgh if that's how you spell it. It's where Harry Enfield got his character that runs the shop with expensive shit in it from I'm sure.

I like York.

Me too. I also like Harrogate and Lymington, both of which have had a mention.

I'm now worrying that I may actually be a bit stuck up myself, and that may be why I like stuck-up places. Which would be weird, given that I grew up on the roughest council estate in Croydon, so pretty fucking rough.

@taleasolasgrime

This is SO true. I belong to a DL club locally and I constantly marvel at the conspicuous consumption and utter snootiness on display. Which is pretty impressive given it's located in an industrial estate on the outskirts of Croydon!

Richmond. I lived just on the edge of it for a while and my goodness, most entitled and stuck up crowd I've come across. Although Salcombe came close.

I've also lived rurally, in a hamlet, which was all old money and horses in perhaps one of the most prestigious areas of the country. Everyone could not have been nicer and friendlier. They were much posher than the great people of Richmond too.

Godalming in Surrey.

Came on to say this.

Barnes, SW London. Met the most horrible nouveau riche group who completely isolated me because I didn't fit in with their "type". Was unable to avoid them for various reasons but they didn't speak to me or my family. Was told by the queen bee that I needn't come to a meeting she was highjacking from my role. The one or two who did talk to me told me that they were "outsiders" like me! I never knew I was an "outsider" until I met that group!! This was obviousy based on perceived bigotry and prejudices (which I won't go into here) but it was spelled out to me. It really knocked my self-esteem to come into contact with that group. I am sure there are some very lovely people living there too but this group was toxic.

Weirdly, Brighton. I’ve only visited once and was quite looking forward to it. Got out of the station and a young (very trendy looking) girl turned round and said ‘excuse me!’ When I accidentally nudged her foot with my suitcase, and looked at me as if I was dirt she’d scraped off her shoe. It was a weird mix of pretentious looking, hipster youngsters and then lots of a lots of poverty and homelessness alongside…strange atmosphere

Bristol is stuck up when it's full of women from Bath on a night out.

ZeroPlastic · 13/04/2023 21:49

Never been anywhere that struck me as stuck up. Maybe I’m stuck up?

I found Burghley to be all rara buns, posh wellies and Land Rovers. It was very pretty though.

Burghley - meaning Burghley House?

Home (sort of) of Lord Burghley?

Surely that's a bit like saying, well that Buckingham Palace is a bit posh? Chatsworth has a high opinion of itself? The point of a stately home is, surely, that its stuck-uppedness is built in?

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 13/04/2023 21:50

Harrow. The 'On the Hill' bit is upmarket but the main town centre was nothing to shout about, but people in the shops are very snobby.

Surprised people say Knutsford and Alderley Edge Tbh. My brother lives in the 'golden triangle' and is admittedly very well off, as is everybody who lives there and I have never found it snobby. Most people are wealthy but still down to earth IME

What an awful experience. I know the area but haven't lived there. It's bullying. Those who say, well I don't have a chip on my shoulder, have not been on the receiving end of this shit.

earsup · 13/04/2023 21:50

There was a very over priced gift shop in my area....few items priced, socks at £70, a scarf at £90....staff were ok but other customers really snooty and vile. it closed down last week as its cheap rent period expired. Also a snooty wine bar place near us, full of vile snots.

HectorPlasm · 13/04/2023 21:50

I'm amazed Krutsford is on this list. I live 5 miles away and find the people there very friendly indeed

Burnham Market on high days and holidays.

I was going to say that. We stayed there last year. Our car was very modest compared to the other cars in the car park - range rovers, porsche and the odd rolls, mostly with personalised number plates.
