@Furries suggested this one so if no one replies, it's on her Grin

I'll start:

Raffles in Singapore
Casablancas in Liverpool (the one with the chippy in the basement)
The Underground in Croydon

The mosquito bar in Clapham

The Harbour bar in Portrush - the proper downstairs pub bit, not the new bar upstairs

The Bear Inn, in a town called Street in Somerset, which was until the late 90s run by Quakers as a dry/alcohol-free pub

Ha ha never been to the non-pub but I have spent many a happy hour in Street at Clarks' Village and the outdoor pool. I will ask my in-laws, who are from near there, about the pub.

MrsRinaDecker · 09/04/2023 21:57

@PollyThePixie not to my knowledge! I’ll raise you the old Fat Sam’s or deja vu??

The old Fat Sams, yes, Deja Vu, no.

But this thread has me googling. Hungry Mary’s was the nickname for the Hubara that was on Broughty Ferry Road but it seems there’s still a Bar in the hotel that’s called Hungry Mary’s. I was meaning the original one - Hungry Mary was the owner.

How about the JM, Tiffany’s and The Palais. Or am I giving my age away?

SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 09/04/2023 21:01

Thanks @MrsTerryPratchett 😊

I'll add one for any Dublin MNetters; Horseshoe Bar, Sherbourne Hotel

Used to be my local when I worked in Upper Merrion Street

Quids Inn, Douglas, IoM

Probably the biggest dive I've ever visited 😂

I've never studied at the University of Liverpool, but I've spent many a night in their student union bar - does that count?

I think Student Unions don't count because you have to be signed in. But the Oxford and Cambridge both on campus at Liverpool would have counted.

The Absintherie, Prague, for an absinthe mojito.

The Grenadier, London, hard to find.

The Strawberry Thief, Bristol. Lovely William Morris decor, lots of dark wood, feels like being in Belgium.

Was the pool called Green bank?

that was the first place I ate a Twister lolly!

I don't really understand this game but aren't you supposed to say if you have been to one that someone previously mentioned? If that is the aim, surely you've been to Mes Amis? I've been to Club 71 and the China Fleet Club, I don't remember a Mad Dog on Hollywood Road though.

Mad Dogs was on Holywood road (back entrance out onto Lang Kwai Fong) in the mid late 80s. Caroline's bar just over the road, and not too far from foreign correspondents club.

Mad Dogs expanded into a big pub down in central with another over in Kowloon. Never the same.

Same owners had Jo Bannana's in Wanchai. Other HK hostelries....the Smuglers arms over at Stanley and the Wanch in wanchai. All a long time ago now!!!!

sanityisamyth · 09/04/2023 22:18

The coronation tap in Clifton, Bristol.

PegasusReturns · 09/04/2023 22:19

I’ve been to Raffles in Singapore and Dubai; the Horse shoe bar at the Shelbourne and the FCC in both Phnom Pen and Siem Reap.

I give you the Rovers Return in Aqaba Jordan

Randomuser9876 · 09/04/2023 22:20

I've been to 3 of these!

The Willow in York
Cafe de Paris in Monaco
The Prospect of Whitby in London

My options are... Maestro's in Bradford or Majestiks in Leeds

mathanxiety · 09/04/2023 22:20

Goldyburgers, Chicago burbs.
Great burgers and cheap beer.

Starlitexpress · 09/04/2023 22:21

Aigburth Arms........Dave Lister was not there.........

ChocChipHandbag · 09/04/2023 22:22

@tenbob yes, Greenbank, that's right.

Kenzi Bar, Flic en Flac, Mauritius
The Conquering Hero, Beulah Hill, with the live pig in the bar
The Trip To Jerusalem, Nottingham

I’ve been to the Trip in Notts.

ChocChipHandbag · 09/04/2023 22:24

@Sceptic1234 I was too young for HK in the eighties, visited once as a student early 90s and went to Joe Bananas and the CFC then, but main time I lived there was early 2010s, definitely saw a band or 2 at the Wanch. Mes Amis closed in about 2014, I don't know how long it has been there.

aholidaynotacarpark · 09/04/2023 22:25

QueenofFox · 09/04/2023 21:34

Been to Raffles, The Willow and Marathon bar (many times 😉 )
Mine is Indo, nr Brick Lane, London and Club 71 in Hong Kong. Also Royal Sovereign in N16. No one knows that one!

Oooh I used to love Indo too! Is that still there?

😂😂

Been a few times for drinks or lunch and always been planning to stay….your experience has made me reconsider!

I don’t know what the rooms are like now but when we stayed there (because I was curious) they resembled an African movie set from the 50’s after a drunken Hollywood set designer had also got high on magic mushrooms. At first glance it resembled a psychedelic nightmare but it kind of grew on you after a few minutes and started to make sense - till your attention was drawn to the bed and the mirrors were pointed out to you by a very proud Butler. I didn’t know my toes could curl up so much.

In the morning my husband was all lovely dovey and whispered in my ear, wake up sleepyhead it’s time to get up, (he still thought he’d been responsible for me almost passing out) but little did he know I’d been awake for about an hour and I was too scared to open my eyes and see the sight of myself in those mirrors.

Magicmonster · 09/04/2023 22:28

Ah I’ve been to two of these - the club with swimming pool at Old Street, and Prospect of Whitby. Anyone got Volts, Exeter Quays,?!

PollyannaWhittier · 09/04/2023 22:29

sanityisamyth · 09/04/2023 22:18

The coronation tap in Clifton, Bristol.

I've been to the Corry Tap ! (And steered my flatmates home after they attempted the cider challenge Grin)

FKATondelayo · 09/04/2023 22:29

I don't really understand this thread but I'll offer.

La Bodeguita Del Medio in Havana. It is about 10 foot x 10 foot and had 100 people and a large salsa band when I went there.
Crystal Rooms Hereford - iconic and much missed
Dirty Laundry - West Hollywood.

I've drunk at Severe in Manchester on many an occasion and is Casablancas the one near the Everyman Theatre which looked like a house and you had to knock on the door?

FKATondelayo · 09/04/2023 22:30

the club with swimming pool at Old Street

Yep, been there. (shudders)
