Just come up on BBC News. He was 67.

I'm absolutely heartbroken today, after years of nagging DH for a dog he finally softened after watching FTLOD with the wonderful Paul. We visited Battersea and I felt a spark of fate when we were matched with a fluffy little feisty girl called Lily. Thank you Paul for the incredible work you did and I hope you're met at the rainbow bridge. Lily snoring peacefully under my desk as I type...

the80sweregreat · 29/03/2023 12:06

His chat show on channel four was superb
He let them speak and actually listened

vjg13 · 29/03/2023 12:18

Really sad news. I loved his sarcasm and wit and he highlighted Battersea and all rescue dogs in a superb way.

LadyEloise1 · 29/03/2023 12:24

I've just listened to Paul's Desert Island Discs. It was released in 2003 !!!
Has he done another, later one ?
If not, what a shame - he packed so much into his life since 2003, it would be so interesting.
An amazing talented man. 💔

Just a heads up BBC Desert Island Discs producers, if there are any other "National Treasures" who haven't done a Desert Island Discs programme for years, I think you should rectify this and do a new one with the National Treasures.

I’m incredibly respectful of Paul. Like I said…he did amazing work for an industry I’m involved in and hugely passionate about.

Which is why I find it really sad that people take the time to remember and enjoy Paul’s work as Lily now that he’s dead, but while he was alive they were hurling abuse at others doing the same as Paul. If you respect Paul and his craft then you won’t be on other MN threads talking about “woman face” or “cultural appropriation”. In which case my comment shouldn’t have offended you 🤷‍♀️

If you could kindly avoid yelling “fuck off” at someone on a thread about someone death that’d probably be respectful too. Maybe look at why it made you so angry to see the hypocrisy pointed out? Paul O’Grady does drag = good. Anyone else = offensive to women. I’m sure it’s a conversation Paul would be happy to see.

GoodChat · 29/03/2023 12:56

People get upset about a very different kind of drag @CallMeDaddy58. This isn't the place for the debate.

Sorry but you are being far too kind. I completely understand the outrage about drag story time, but I have seen countless comments and threads calling drag “women face” and “cultural appropriation”. That’s the craft as a whole. That’s Paul and his work.

JumpToRecipe · 29/03/2023 12:59

Start a separate thread to discuss the issue please, @CallMeDaddy58.

What made me angry is that you jumped on a thread talking about someone’s death pushing your own agenda. Time and place and all that.

Why don’t you start a different thread, you’re not welcome here with your politics.

Vetoncall · 29/03/2023 13:04

I'm so sad to see this news today, he was such a wonderful, genuine, caring person. His love of dogs and all animals shone through. A real loss to the world as well as his husband, family and friends.

Jellykat · 29/03/2023 13:14

So so upsetting, i adored him, he was such a hero of mine.
I loved him as Lily, his telly show, his humour that had me laughing out loud and his Radio 2 slot, but mostly for his work with Battersea and his absolute love for animals.. a very very sad loss indeed!

Kick ass up there Mr O'Grady❤

I have no agenda and it isn’t political. It’s cultural commentary on the soul reason the person we are grieving is even known to us in the first place. It’s highly relevant. I have however started another thread so I’ll leave you to your celebrations of an utterly fantastic drag queen 👑

He was more than a drag queen. He was a fabulous, kind-hearted, beautiful human being. Shame on you.

Carlycat · 29/03/2023 13:50

A wonderful advocate for rescue animals 😞

I completely agree!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/03/2023 13:59

I loved his radio show, with him "broadcasting from the back bedroom" during covid. And he did so much good work publicising Battersea.

Zipps · 29/03/2023 14:00

Very sad news. Amazing man, dog lover through and through.

Elderflower14 · 29/03/2023 14:42

Lovely to see a tribute from Danny Beard on the news at 1... I recordered it with the subtitles for ds2 to watch as he's friends with Danny and loved Paul...

Oh you do have an agenda - typical TRA trying to claim the moral high ground and falling flat on your face- Shame on you.

BasiliskStare · 29/03/2023 15:25

Well - what I will never never forget Paul O'Grady for is his work with Battersea Dogs' home . & Just ( I am a dog lover ) the way he spoke to those dogs , the carers , was interested in their problems and how they could be appropriately rehomed ( the dogs not the carers ) I thought he was charming and just a joy & I think made people aware of getting a rescue dog , what needs to be thought about etc , But he did it all in such a nice way.

I did not know the man but he came across as a thoroughly nice and decent person.
