Twitter is saying that a Ukrainian arms depot has been hit

There certainly were reports of a large scale Russian cruise missile attack early this AM, but also reports that the Ukrainian Air Defences were very successful.

Haven't seen anything about successful strikes on specific targets (and TBH it would probably be best if the Russians were kept in the dark about what they had/hadn't hit).

One usually fairly reliable twitter source here:

ugh :(

it's going to happen but goddamn it.

notimagain · 01/05/2023 07:33

Until Kyiv cracked down on some of the reporting the MSM were doing a pretty good job of providing the Russians with free Battle Damage Assessment in the early days of this war...

As a result I'm surprised by how quickly this story has got out and wonder how accurate and complete it will turn out to be

Just speculation from me but it's worth bearing in mind we should be into deep misinformation season right now and there might be some mileage in kidding the Russians their intel/targeting was spot on and that the Ukrainian forces have lost a significant amount of materiel...

We will see..or maybe not.

minsmum · 01/05/2023 11:02

@notimagain you are right of course and with the amount of missiles the Russians are sending they will occasionally hit a military target.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 01/05/2023 12:11

Just catching up:

Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu promoted the Kremlin’s efforts to form a potential anti-Western coalition during a meeting of the defense ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in New Delhi, India. Shoigu stated on April 28 that the SCO meeting occurred against the backdrop of the establishment of a new multipolar world order, which the collective West is actively opposing.[11] Shoigu argued that the US and its allies are provoking conflicts with Russia and China and that the West is attempting to defeat Russia and threaten China through the war in Ukraine.[12] Shoigu invited SCO member states to participate in the 11th Moscow Conference of International Security and called on the SCO to develop a framework for exchanging military information, cooperation in joint military exercises, and the development of partnerships between the SCO and Russian-favored multilateral organizations such as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).[13]

This terrifies me.

ISW is publishing a special edition campaign assessment today, April 30. This report details changes in the Russian military command since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine without a clear and doctrinal command structure and his reluctance to appoint an overall theater commander have had lasting effects on the structure of the Russian command in Ukraine. Putin’s regular command changes have led to an increasingly factionalized Russian military and disorganized command structures that are degrading the Russian military’s ability to conduct a cohesive campaign in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reluctance to appoint an overall theater commander for his invasion of Ukraine has had cascading effects on the Russian military including fueling intense factionalization, disorganizing command structures, and feeding unattainable expectations.

[well worth a full read]

Key inflections in ongoing military operations on April 30:

  • The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian forces did not conduct offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line on April 30.[80] Ukrainian National Guard Spokesperson Rulan Muzychuk stated that Russian forces are using more artillery but conducting fewer assaults in the Kupyansk and Lyman directions than in Bakhmut and Marinka.[81]
  • Russian forces conducted ground attacks in and around Bakhmut and along the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line on April 30.[82] Ukrainian Eastern Grouping of Forces Spokesperson Colonel Serhiy Cherevaty reported that Ukrainian forces continue to have access to logistics routes to Bakhmut.[83]
  • A Russian source suggested on April 30 that Russian forces will likely conduct their own offensive in southern Ukraine if the potential Ukrainian counteroffensive fails.[84] The Russian source cited the fact that top Russian officials and law enforcement are discussing possible candidates to lead various districts in Zaporizhia Oblast which are currently under Ukrainian control as further evidence of Russian plans to move in the southern direction.[85]
  • Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Head Kyrylo Budanov reported that Russia is seeking to take control of numerous Russian paramilitary groups and is trying to create a new structure that would subordinate private military companies (PMCs) to the Russian General Staff.[86]
  • A Russian milblogger claimed that Russia is forming new brigades of the airborne forces (VDV), elite units that have conducted joint operations with Wagner forces in Bakhmut.[87]

“The full-scale war started by Russia has shown that decentralization in Ukraine works. It was local authorities’ ability to make rapid, essential decisions independently that helped many cities withstand the first attacks and coordinate the lives of their citizens – in one way or another. However, when the full-scale war started, local authorities’ transparency suffered a noticeable setback, despite clear successes achieved by Ukraine in the past. What does this mean for millions of brave hearts, and how do we fix this situation? Let’s figure it out,” writes, Executive Director of Transparency International Ukraine, Andrii Borovyk in his recent op-ed.

Ukraine appears to be counterattacking in Bakhmut.

https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1652955890058776583

Lots of possibilities here. This could be the opening of the long awaited counteroffensive. It could also be intended to draw Russian forces into the area so as to weaken them elsewhere. Or it could be a RIF (reconnaissance in force), which is a probing attack the goal of which is to gain information about enemy positions and capabilities. One thing to keep in mind about Wagner, which still controls this area, is that they are largely an offensive force. They aren't trained and equipped to defend territory. That's not what they get paid for.

@MissConductUS Glad to see Kevin's McCarthy's unequivocal support.

It sounds like the Russian reporter was being a troll by misquoting the Russian propaganda line as fact. Of course he got shot down pdq.

"House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) vehemently shut down a Russian reporter during a press conference in Israel on Monday after the reporter noted his past statements regarding unlimited military aid to Ukraine.

“We know that you don’t support the current unlimited and uncontrolled supplies of weaponry and aid to Ukraine. So can you comment? Is it possible, if in the near future the U.S. policy regarding sending weaponry to Ukraine will change?” asked the Russian reporter.

“Yeah, I’m not sure. The sound here is not good? Did he say I don’t support aid to Ukraine? No. I vote for aid for Ukraine,” McCarthy replied.
“I support aid for Ukraine. I do not support what your country has done to Ukraine. I do not support your killing of the children either. And I think for one standpoint, you should pull out and I don’t think it’s right. And we will continue to support because the rest of the world sees it just as it is,” the speaker concluded."
