Is this the right length of sentence to reflect the damage done?

Yes

Ceryneianhind · 14/03/2023 18:55

Who

Nimbostratus100 · 14/03/2023 18:55

yes, she deserves it

Ceryneianhind · 14/03/2023 18:59

Eleanor Williams jailed for eight and a half years after rape and trafficking lies
Twenty-two-year-old from Barrow posted photos on Facebook falsely claiming she had been abused

Isntthatapippette · 14/03/2023 19:00

What she did was awful, but I’d like to see rapists treated with the same amount of public disgust and the same sentences. They won’t, though.

Manybeards · 14/03/2023 19:00

She also claimed to have been attacked but actually injured herself with a hammer

Drumminganimal · 14/03/2023 19:01

She did a terrible thing, those men were broken by what she did and a community attacked by far right thugs. Length of sentence was about right imo. Although I do wonder what was going on with her to make her do it.

Ilovegoodison · 14/03/2023 19:02

Not long enough.

NomadicSpirit · 14/03/2023 19:03

Ilovegoodison · 14/03/2023 19:02

Not long enough.

This. One of the guys tried to end his life from what I recall and the Asian family were treated awfully because of her and her lies.

Mammma91 · 14/03/2023 19:03

My heart really aches for the victims she accused. Their lives in turmoil! Not long enough.

itsgettingweird · 14/03/2023 19:03

Yea she should have been sentenced.

However I can't help wondering if she required MH support rather than prison - but I'm sure (hope) all that was explored thoroughly during investigation.

I feel most sorry for the victims of her crime who she accused of being perpetrators. Sometimes they will never be forgiven even if proven innocent.

timetorefresh · 14/03/2023 19:03

Some of those men attempted suicide over what she did. Their lives and their families lives are in tatters. Plus she will increase doubt over true cases. I think she should have had longer!

Rape carries a maximum life sentence, starting point is 5 years. Rapists are treated as pariahs in prison. This woman ruined lives.

This in spades.

YNK · 14/03/2023 19:08

The police resources dedicated to this and her previous case must be staggering!

I'm unable to get my head around this whole case.

OP posts:
Clymene · 14/03/2023 19:13

@RiktheButler Rape also ruins lives @RiktheButler. Most rapists never even get charged, much less prosecuted. There are many more rapists walking around than there are men who have been convicted of a rape they didn't commit.

That said, I'm really glad justice has been done here, my heart goes out to these men and hope they can rebuild their shattered lives.

cosmiccosmos · 14/03/2023 19:13

Of course she should receive time however sentencing needs to be looked at in this country.

Some of the grooming gang members got less time then this. Pakistani men who are proven to have abused numerous girls, many of whom showed a complete contempt for UK law and the victims during proceedings.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 14/03/2023 19:14

Rape has pretty much been decriminalised in this country. I would like to see rapists treated as harshly.

24KaratCucumber · 14/03/2023 19:18

I can't begin to imagine the situation for those accused or their families.
I think 8 years is a decent tariff, but, I really hope they give her some mental health support and help to find out why she did it etc.

Hooklander · 14/03/2023 19:18

Apparently she's been making up damaging allegations since she was 16? It was also quite telling what the judge said about her not having shown much remorse.

She needs to be in a secure psychiatric facility.

It was all a shit show. No doubt there will now be a big inquiry into things went so far, everyone will be reviewing their procedures, and deputy heads will roll.

Restinggoddess · 14/03/2023 19:20

She just made it even harder for those who have been raped to get justice - at a time if all time low conviction rates

it also raises the question of anonymity for those suspected of rape - but this will affect cases where identifying the suspect helps others come forward - although people have a way of finding out about suspects. I hope the men get some apologies and some closure

She has done irreparable damage

Agreed.

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/03/2023 19:22

Should have been longer.

TartanAndTweed · 14/03/2023 19:25

I can’t get over the fact she smacked herself in the face with a hammer to keep up her lies. It’s so extreme. I really think some intervention is needed here, whilst in prison she needs some mental health support. I wonder though if she will be treated badly in prison, women who have been raped I imagine will not take kindly to her making it up as every time one of these stories of a woman lying about rape comes out it is thrown at women for years after who have genuinely been attacked.

Tedzer · 14/03/2023 19:26

This exactly - what's the rape conviction rate again?
