Is this the right length of sentence to reflect the damage done?

criminalinjurieshelpline.co.uk/blog/punishment-sentencing-sexual-assault/#:~:text=Sentencing%20for%20rape%20is%20considered,sentencing%20would%20be%204%20years.

"Sentencing for rape is considered in the same way as sexual assault, the harm caused to the victim (categories) and the defendant’s culpability. In cases where there are no factors that heighten the harm caused to the victim or the culpability, then the starting point for sentencing would be 4 years."

Forgive me for actuslly using references

AndTheSurveySays · 14/03/2023 20:17

Because of her, their truthful testimony is less likely to be believed by police, the CPS and juries

Why would the CPS and police be less likely to believe a woman because of this? I'd expect them to be professionals that base their decisions on actual evidence.

RiktheButler was replying to a specific post with a specific claim. Posting sentencing outliers doesn't mean I was incorrect

The PP asked who was suggesting it, you were incorrect when you stated five years as the starting point for rape sentencing. It isn’t. There isn’t a minimum.

@RiktheButler Rape also ruins lives @RiktheButler. Most rapists never even get charged, much less prosecuted. There are many more rapists walking around than there are men who have been convicted of a rape they didn't commit.

That said, I'm really glad justice has been done here, my heart goes out to these men and hope they can rebuild their shattered lives.

This.

Tigertigertigertiger · 14/03/2023 19:33

A just result.
and I’m sure she had hordes of supporters saying “we believe you “

She STILL does!!!! The damage she has caused to individuals and the knock on effect in terms of damaging community relations, giving racists license to target vulnerable communities and undermining trust in the criminal justice system is still unfolding. There was a radio 4 report on it and it was terrifying how many people still believe her and of course others are using her as a figurehead to continue to spread racial division.
Re her mental health she will have been psychiatrically assessed before sentencing. Obviously mentally she isn’t right but people can be bad without being mentally ill. I think she was lucky to only get 8 years, but I don’t know what the tariff for perverting the course of justice goes up to. The Judge has to abide by sentencing guidelines.

Blueisthecolour1 · 14/03/2023 20:25

It’s terrible, all-round. The lives of the men she ruined, and she herself a victim of trauma. I mean, what the hell was her motive? A desperate and warped cry for attention & help? To physically smash yourself in the face to perpetuate a lie such as this is attention-seeking on a huge, destructive scale. She’s clearly a very disturbed and unwell young woman.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/03/2023 20:35

ClassicLib · 14/03/2023 20:06

Yes, absolutely. She deserves every week of her sentence and it’s good to see the courts taking her appalling offences seriously.

Williams’ lies have betrayed every woman who has ever been raped or sexually assaulted, and every woman who may be attacked in the future. Because of her, their truthful testimony is less likely to be believed by police, the CPS and juries.
It’s notable that the police appear to have taken Williams very seriously and done everything possible to investigate her allegations properly. Those officers may not be so trusting in the next victim they encounter.

This sums up my thoughts on it. A just sentence considering the huge damage she has done.

SpareHeirOverThere · 14/03/2023 20:41

It immediately made me think: it's a harsher sentence to falsely accuse men of rape, than a man would get for raping a woman.

Isla Bryson got 8 years for raping 2 women - and no one would have thought of his victims or heard of his crime if he hadn't been sent to a female prison.

What she did was awful and deserves a custodial sentence. It affected an entire community. I do feel great sympathy for her victims.

I know that the men considered suicide. I also read recently that up to a third of rape victims consider suicide, and more than one in ten attempt it. PTSD and depression are common in victims of rape and sexual assault.

MissingMoominMamma · 14/03/2023 20:47

It’s just so bizarre that anyone would go to the lengths she did for… for what? Attention?

I’m glad her sentence was harsh (could’ve been harsher, I think). You would hope that every rape accusation is considered on its own evidence, and that her lies will never affect other victims of rape.

Boogismyname · 14/03/2023 20:49

I hope she spent all of her time.
It's people like her that make a mockery of poor victims.
I'm a victim of child sex abuse and she definitely deserves time incarcerated so she can think about how she disadvantaged people

Coffeeandcake15 · 14/03/2023 20:50

Making false allegations makes it more difficult for genuine rape victims.

Summerhillsquare · 14/03/2023 20:56

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 14/03/2023 19:14

Rape has pretty much been decriminalised in this country. I would like to see rapists treated as harshly.

A million times this.

Simonjt · 14/03/2023 20:57

Coffeeandcake15 · 14/03/2023 20:50

Making false allegations makes it more difficult for genuine rape victims.

Yep, she actively tried her hardest to make it even harder for actual victims to come forward.

Then you consider the fact that her actions almost led to the death of one of her victims, nevermind the racism, abuse and awful stress they suffered.

BoredtoRushed · 14/03/2023 21:14

itsgettingweird · 14/03/2023 19:03

Yea she should have been sentenced.

However I can't help wondering if she required MH support rather than prison - but I'm sure (hope) all that was explored thoroughly during investigation.

I feel most sorry for the victims of her crime who she accused of being perpetrators. Sometimes they will never be forgiven even if proven innocent.

Why mental health support?

SaySomethingMan · 14/03/2023 21:15

What she did was awful but she’s not to blame for the racists. They can shoulder the whole blame for their disgustingness

kwetu · 14/03/2023 21:15

Definitely deserved it if not more, but more importantly I would hope she gets the mental health help she obviously needs.

knittingaddict · 14/03/2023 21:19

timetorefresh · 14/03/2023 19:03

Some of those men attempted suicide over what she did. Their lives and their families lives are in tatters. Plus she will increase doubt over true cases. I think she should have had longer!

I think that's why she deserved every day of that sentence and probably more. Actions like this undermine genuine cases and cause untold damage.

Rapists don't get long enough in prison, but the issue here is separate to that.

knittingaddict · 14/03/2023 21:25

Have you seen the statistics on rape charging, let alone conviction? Something like 1%. It's an uphill battle as it is and cases like this only make it harder, if that's possible.

Justmeandthedog1 · 14/03/2023 21:29

I’m not easily shocked but those self inflicted injuries made me gasp. Can only think something awful happened to her previously and she wants to blame someone. Unfortunately anyone.
I hope the men falsely accused get support and help , the repercussions from this could go on and on.

Justalittlebitduckling · 14/03/2023 21:43

How can anyone do that much damage to their own face?!

Agree it needed to be a strong sentence to deter others who falsely cry rape. Because in a roundabout way if liars are treated like this doesn’t it mean those who come forward are more likely to be genuine victims? (I’m sure the vast, vast majority of them are anyway).

www.nwemail.co.uk/news/23278346.fundraiser-fighting-recover-money-raised-ellie-williams/

The go fund me for her was set up to help with legal fees when it was thought her allegations were true. The 22k was transferred to her mum who was refusing to return. It was going to be donated to the Maggie Oliver foundation who seemed to initially support Ellie - they've now stepped back and do not wish to accept

antanddecland · 14/03/2023 21:47

How did she pick random men?

TokyoSushi · 14/03/2023 21:56

She absolutely deserves the sentence.

I really hope that she gets all of the help that she needs whilst she's in prison. The whole case is absolutely bizarre and she clearly has many issues that need to be worked through.

Those poor men, how difficult it would be to rebuild after something like that.

MuthaHubbard · 14/03/2023 21:56

She knew two of them and Mo she knew of - bit of a local entrepreneur who actually lived not far from her house

Fifi0000 · 14/03/2023 21:57

She has to have some underlying mental disorder but I have heard women stab themselves in the middle of a supermarket . insert things into their arm wounds. Bang their head so hard the skull splits. People are capable of very severe mutilation to themselves.
