Is this the right length of sentence to reflect the damage done?

@RiktheButler Rape also ruins lives @RiktheButler. Most rapists never even get charged, much less prosecuted. There are many more rapists walking around than there are men who have been convicted of a rape they didn't commit.

That said, I'm really glad justice has been done here, my heart goes out to these men and hope they can rebuild their shattered lives.

Yep yep yep! Agree totally.

Starflecked · 14/03/2023 19:31

Yes, what she did was abhorrent. Of course its likely there was something going on either in her past or with her MH, but let's be honest that's true of most criminals- where is the line drawn? A fair amount of people in prison have fucked up childhoods or something else going on, it doesn't mean they shouldn't be in there albeit they should recieve the necessary support.

I agree rape sentences should be harsher and more resource invested in so that conviction rates increase as the police can actually look into them; but doesn't negate what she did. It was calculated and ruined their lives, also damaging to women who have been raped.

Tigertigertigertiger · 14/03/2023 19:33

A just result.
and I’m sure she had hordes of supporters saying “we believe you “

Dayvi · 14/03/2023 19:33

Dreadful thing to happen and I really feel for the men and their families who were targeted.

I would like more resources to go into rape cases, so that those who are actually guilty are prosecuted as well. As we know there are many who are guilty of rape / grooming, yet are walking free.

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 14/03/2023 19:34

@Tedzer Rape Crisis stats for England and Wales says only 1 in 100 rapes recorded by police resulted in a charge - and that's not conviction, just a charge. (2021 figures)

3 men tried to commit suicide because of her lies and it sparked mass protests inciting racial tensions. She got off lightly.

Feetinthemudandleaves · 14/03/2023 19:46

I find it hard to believe that she could have injured herself in that way unless she was seriously mentally ill.

It should be possible to feel sorry for her without diminishing the terrrible crime she committed.

Haddie321 · 14/03/2023 19:46

Honestly i feel like it should've been longer, but am only too aware that rapists also don't get long enough

LadyKenya · 14/03/2023 19:47

She deserved the sentence that she got. Hopefully for herself, and her family she will receive the help that she obviously needs, while serving her sentence.

BobcatDreams · 14/03/2023 19:50

I wish rapists were sentenced as severely as some of you are suggesting they are.
This website lists some of the low sentences but the most horrendous ones being found GUILTY of raping girls under 13 but not serving any sentence AT ALL !

Who is suggesting that? 😵‍💫 most replies if not all on this thread acknowledge the sentences and the amount that actually get that far are too low.

Suzi888 · 14/03/2023 19:55

“The court heard Williams continued to maintain her innocence and that two psychiatrists had been unable to diagnose her with a disorder. But one, Dr Lucy Bacon, said she had experienced complex post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of childhood trauma.”- 🙄

She ruined lives. She wasted police time. She’s possibly put herself in jeopardy as no one will ever believe her again, no matter what. She should serve her entire sentence, but she won’t.

Rape carries a maximum life sentence, starting point is 5 years. Rapists are treated as pariahs in prison. This woman ruined lives.

No, it most certainly isn’t. Non custodial and suspended sentences for rape are not unknown. Or even uncommon.

Nosleepforthismum · 14/03/2023 20:00

Plenty of people with mental health issues that would never do what she did. I have no sympathy. It goes further than just those poor mens lives she has ruined, she has also single handedly made it even harder for women who are genuine victims of rape to be heard and believed.

There ^ That's from a post above.
"Starting point is 5 years" is absolute and complete bollocks

This.

ClassicLib · 14/03/2023 20:06

Yes, absolutely. She deserves every week of her sentence and it’s good to see the courts taking her appalling offences seriously.

Williams’ lies have betrayed every woman who has ever been raped or sexually assaulted, and every woman who may be attacked in the future. Because of her, their truthful testimony is less likely to be believed by police, the CPS and juries.
It’s notable that the police appear to have taken Williams very seriously and done everything possible to investigate her allegations properly. Those officers may not be so trusting in the next victim they encounter.

Theunamedcat · 14/03/2023 20:08

Local paedophile got two years SUSPENDED broke the law again another two years again SUSPENDED

Sentencing in this country is a joke when molestation of a child is virtually legal and lies are not

To be clear I'm not disagreeing with her sentence I'm saying paedophiles and rapists get off all too easily

OnaBegonia · 14/03/2023 20:08

The resources used must be pushing millions of ££, there were over 150 other crimes linked to her 'case'; hate crimes, assaults etc after her 'list' went viral.
Horrendous use of limited public funds.
She is evil, mentally ill or both, one of the men she accused had met her once when she asked him for a light in the street, she named other women as victims, it is truly awful how she's ruined so many lives.

What she did was awful, but I’d like to see rapists treated with the same amount of public disgust and the same sentences. They won’t, though.

This was also my thought reading at lunchtime. How many actual rapists convicted even get this length of sentence. What she did was wrong and caused enormous impact to the community. Yes, but so does a rapist who is neither caught nor convicted -only the impact of that is more for women.

Yes I can't imagine doing that to yourself if you haven't got serious MH issues.
