Roussette · 08/03/2023 10:33

Will you be voting tactically then to get the Tories who you hate, out?

soz didnt mean to tag you!
not sure yet, but cannot in good conscience give starmer my vote with the way he has treated poc , mayors, councillors and members.

I find it extraordinary that anyone with legal training can seriously claim that they believe the boats policy is rational, let alone lawful. They're effectively saying "We will make it impossible for genuine refugees from certain countries to apply for asylum in advance, if they turn up we will therefore declare them illegal immigrants for failing to do what we have made impossible, and we will detain them before deporting them".

Braverman really deserves to be struck off as a barrister, and it should have happened when she was proclaiming equally unlawful views as Attorney General.

I am wondering if Matt Green has been on some of the threads on here to find material.

DuncinToffee · 08/03/2023 11:11

Good post Cornettoninja, thanks

IClaudine · 08/03/2023 11:21

Thanks Roussette.

I wonder what number thread we will be up to by the time the GE rolls around?

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2023 11:28

That Daily Mail article is very striking - particularly its use of the word aliens.

The Bar Council didnt move against Buckland even when he advised the Governement to break the law so I doubt it has the teeth to take on Braverman.
I do think it is time that the leader of the Bar Council is an independent appointment rather than the AG of the day.

SCOOP: FDA boss Dave Penman writes to Rishi Sunak demanding an apology after Suella Braverman accused civil servants of being part of a “left-wing blob” blocking govt attempts to stop small boats. Also says she’s broken the ministerial code.

Sources close to Suella Braverman say she never saw the email before it was sent out by CCHQ.

Haven't seen that thread; interested if there is a link available. My work takes me to a lot of different homes,
income levels and attitudes.
The cost common reason I've noticed, and never comment out loud, is cultural! People wealthy enough to be insulated from the worst of team blue financial illiteracy who don't see Labour as "their party". That's despite the obvious impact on their cost-of -living, their kid's future, Brexit chaos et-cetera. It's straight out of Trump's culture war playbook.
No need to muddy the water with facts; just identify your home team and get blaming the opposition. The more facts ignored, the more secure the resentment.

I'm watching PMQs. KS is doing a good job.

Sunak has just said that if one arrives here illegally one will not be able to access the modern slavery system.

Which as far as I can tell means that since there is no such thing as arriving illegally if one is an asylum seeker, Sunak is happy for them to be slaves?

Cornettoninja · 08/03/2023 12:34

ahhh @jgw1 I see that you just don’t understand… people traffickers and slavers really hate their victims residing in a country where they have no legal protection so that will stop them targeting the UK.

It’s a brilliant plan!

That makes sense, thank you for the clarification.

Semantically, it can also be read as meaning “no one who arrives here illegally will be able to become a modern slave by being trafficked into the modern slavery system”, but I think we can all safely say they don’t mean that version. It’s either unintentionally incompetently worded, or all the civil servants braverman has been slagging off are getting revenge by undermining the message.

Could well be what Sunak was saying. Careful though because some may think it is racist to not understand someone talking nonsense.

What a mess……

🔵 Tories sent out mass email from Home Secretary yesterday blaming civil servants for small boats
🔵 The fundraising message included Suella Braverman’s signature
🔵 Following a backlash, No10 now says she didn’t write or approve email

I have never signed a document I haven't read.
Anyone else?

mibbelucieachwell · 08/03/2023 13:47

@DuncinToffee Suella explaining there how incompetent the government is that they can't even deal with 45,000 asylum seekers. While making out the problem to be vast numbers of people about to overload UK hoping this will terrify people who aren't racist and please the racists.

How nasty.

mibbelucieachwell · 08/03/2023 13:49

Eh! Blaming civil servants for small boats?!

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2023 13:50

"I have never signed a document I haven't read.
Anyone else?"

No. And as a barrister she would have been particularly alert to signing something you haven't read.
