Do you put your toaster in a cupboard

...when it's not in use? I thought it was odd but thinking about it it would be good to have a clear worktop

MIL keeps her toaster in the cupboard. We don’t but have enough cupboard space to do so.

I always thought it was just her that did this until now.

mamakoukla · 19/02/2023 04:02

Yes because I prefer the extra workspace

pinkfondu · 19/02/2023 05:06

Used to but no room now

RoryMcGory · 19/02/2023 05:18

Yes, it's on a tray to catch crumbs. I like clear worktops.

StClare101 · 19/02/2023 05:23

No, but the kids have toast for breakfast every day. We have a butlers pantry which is where the toaster, kettle, coffee machine and sandwich press permanently live on the counter top.

Caspianberg · 19/02/2023 05:32

Yes. When re redid the kitchen last year we added a breakfast pantry. So kettle and toaster live in there plugged in. Just open doors and use everything there plugged in. Then close the doors on all the clutter.

Microwave is plugged in inside small food pantry we have. It’s an old stone ventilated room next to kitchen ( only about 1m wide) which we added electric into recently so microwave and nutribullet live there.

worktop is only one side of smal kitchen diner, and 4.5m long. That one sink and hob in it so it isn’t that big and I wanted a clear surface. We only have a fruit bowl there.

rosiebl · 19/02/2023 08:09

Ours lives in the cupboard. It has its own tray to catch crumbs. We have a small kitchen so worktop space is at a premium. Plus we use it rarely.

Oblomov23 · 19/02/2023 08:43

No. It lives on the worktop.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/02/2023 10:21

Yes I do. I keep it in a deep dish to catch crumbs. I don't want it taking up worktop space as it's not frequently used.

Theoldwoman · 19/02/2023 10:23

Yes, I do.

Im a minimalist, so need clear bench tops. I actually keep it inside a basket, much easier to pull out the whole thing with one hand.

Suedomin · 19/02/2023 10:32

No,it would take up valuable cupboard space and I use it every day anyway, like the kettle

No but I was raised Catholic lol The standing joke, or it seems to be more correct than joke really in Northern Ireland is that if it is on the counter top you are Catholic and if in the press (cos we do not have cupboards) you are Protestant. It is mentioned in Derry girls at least once :)

I'm so glad you've explained it. I thought it was a euphemism for using contraception or something!

MandaLynn · 19/02/2023 10:34

Yes. When we redid the kitchen we put in an appliance cupboard - the blender, toaster, microwave all live in there behind closed doors. It's my favourite thing in the kitchen, not seeing them

emotionalpuddle · 19/02/2023 10:35

My toaster has always lived in the cupboard, don't eat toast often and it looks messy enough without disused appliances Blush only have a kettle out as the microwave is built in also..

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 19/02/2023 10:38

Bairnsmum05 · 18/02/2023 22:37

Nope, only protestants do this 🤣🤣

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bloody love Derry Girls

confusedlots · 19/02/2023 10:53

I only clicked on the thread to say that only Protestants do this, but looks like lots of you beat me to it 🤣🤣

The board from Derry Girls is currently displayed at the Ulster museum in Belfast if anyone local is interested to see it.

HildasLostSock · 19/02/2023 11:27

Yes but its a 4 slice one, I have a relatively small kitchen/not much worktop space and I only have toast a couple of times a week. It sits on a tray in the cupboard so loose crumbs can be swept from the tray straight into the bin. If I had a bigger kitchen or used it more often it might sit out - my parents one always lived on the worktop/not inside a cupboard.

Surroundedbyfools · 19/02/2023 11:44

No. The toaster is the least of my worries. I’ve got a perfect prep, steriliser, Milton bucket all out on worktop ! Also even if I didn’t who could be arse hauling a toaster In n out of cupboards daily ! I think it’s this whole insta home trend. It’s ok for ur house to look like u live in it

woodhill · 19/02/2023 12:50

EasilyDirected · 18/02/2023 22:47

No, we hardly ever use it but have plenty of counter space and its beautiful (Dualit) so it stays out.

Yes mine is and attractive to look at

whoruntheworldgirls · 19/02/2023 12:52

Yep, all i have out are the cooking utensils, knife block, coffee machine and velvetiser

FindingMeno · 19/02/2023 12:55

Yes - on a small tray we lift out with it so we don't rain crumbs everywhere.
We have hardly anything on the worksurfaces as there's limited space, and keeping stuff in a cupboard also means it stays much cleaner.
Recipe books, all utensils etc are put away.
Kettle and coffee and tea storage are out though.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 19/02/2023 12:55

No, ours is used at least once a day so it would be forever going in and out. Plus it's cupboard space we're lacking more than worktop space!

Zaliea · 19/02/2023 12:57

I thought about it and for hygiene reasons I think it makes more sense for it to be in a cupboaed, a spider or a fly or what not could just climb inside it in the night I suppose and die idk 😂 not done it yet though, seems a faff and no space

SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/02/2023 12:59

Yes due to limited worktop space

LOL....I think you should explore this notion.
Do you keep all potential spider and fly death traps in cupboards? Grin
