Do you put your toaster in a cupboard

...when it's not in use? I thought it was odd but thinking about it it would be good to have a clear worktop

I had a toaster drawer built into my kitchen when I designed it.

My toaster is beautiful but we have limited worktop space and so it goes back in the drawer after each use - usually just breakfast some days.

It's not regularly in use enough to justify a worktop spot!

LabradorEyes · 18/02/2023 23:50

Yes I do. It only gets used a couple of times a year so there's no point in having it on the counter

No, I’m not a Protestant. 😉

Ha. Someone was telling me about this last year.

catandcoffee · 18/02/2023 23:50

I've just made some toast after all the reading about toasters. 😁

EllieM27 · 18/02/2023 23:50

I put mine away since I only use it in spurts. Also since I moved to the US I have realized that there is quite a thing for huge kitchens with clear worktops here so I have conformed accordingly. 😂

Well, except for the Keurig which I absolutely cannot be arsed to move.

Redinthefacegirl · 18/02/2023 23:51

Yes, its kept in the cupboard. Even for daily toast its only out for 5min a day.

Our toaster is a monster, DH has had it since he was a student (we're in our 40s), who knows why its so big. I don't know why its never occurred to us to change it, accept it works.

I had no idea this is a protestant/Catholic thing. But I've found this unusual devide rather amusing. DH is Irish Catholic (atheist nowadays) and I guess my background is protestant (also atheist).

junipermarten · 18/02/2023 23:51

Yep! Recently moved and the worktops are split up so not a great deal of space for prep work if it was out. I bought a tray especially and it goes in a cupboard in the island after use every morning. The same goes for the air fryer! It takes 2 seconds to unplug and put away, not exactly taxing..

junipermarten · 18/02/2023 23:52

My microwave is in a cupboard too..

Mothership4two · 18/02/2023 23:53

Used to keep it on a tray in the cupboard under the work surface (MIL does too) but once DSs hit their teens it seems to be in constant use so leave it out now

I don’t keep it in cupboard, my mum does…the main thing is the toaster has to live on a tray. If it’s staying out at all times, the tray catches the crumbs for easy cleaning, and if you’re moving it in and out of a cupboard, you need the tray even more. Trick is getting the right tray aesthetically. My mum has a stainless steel tray; I’ve used a tiny baking tray in the past but my current toaster is bigger so I have a Joseph Joseph chopping/ carving board that’s slanted with a lip and that’s perfect.

I love that the toaster needs accessories to live in the cupboard

LeandraDear · 18/02/2023 23:55

My ex MIL did and the only thing that was allowed to be kept out was the kettle and that had to be empty.

Mammut · 18/02/2023 23:55

I put mine in a drawer, keeps my surfaces clear and is no hassle at all.

AliMonkey · 18/02/2023 23:56

I used to when we hardly ever had toast but DD and I now eat it regularly for breakfast so it's on the worktop all the time (and the space in the cupboard has now been used for something else).

Well speaking of accessories, apparently toaster covers were a thing at some point, like a tea cosy!! Think it was an American thing though 😂

mumda · 19/02/2023 00:12

We eat a lot of toast. So no.

PS: corned beef on toast is delicious.

TheOrigRights · 19/02/2023 00:19

No room in the cupboards.
Anyway, I have a cherry red kettle, toaster and coffee machine (not all the same brand) and they are my holy trinity of small kitchen appliances.

Even if I did put it in a cupboard it would go little way to making my kitchen look pure and uncluttered. It's tidy and everything has its space but it's most definitely a busy room. I like it, it's homely.

2X4B523P · 19/02/2023 00:26

Never use to but I brought an air fryer last September which has taken the toasters spot. I would have room for both but I don’t like too much clutter and the toaster gets used much less than the fryer and is easier to move about.

Tessisme · 19/02/2023 00:28

naemates · 18/02/2023 22:44

I binned mine and we use the air fryer Blush

Woah, hang on a minute. Toast? Air fryer? Can I? Should I?

echt · 19/02/2023 00:41

No room in the cupboards even if I wanted to, and it's a Dualit, so very beautiful.
One space saver I did go for was to get rid of the electric kettle and have a stove-top one which is permanently on the hob. Again, it has to be beautiful, so a le Creuset, traditional style.

CrystalMaisie · 19/02/2023 00:48

I Have a Dualit toaster with beautiful
panels to match the wallpaper, and it still gets put back in the cupboard, on a tray to catch the crumbs. Another one who likes a today kitchen with clear sides. I don’t have a microwave but when I did it lived in a cupboard too.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/02/2023 00:48

You can make toast in an air fryer? 😲

Giggorata · 19/02/2023 01:02

Mine is on a big plate in the pantry when not in use. We don"t have toast every day.
I used to have the microwave in the pantry and use it in there as well. But it took up too much storage space.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/02/2023 01:03

I aspire to have a pantry.

Squidwitch · 19/02/2023 02:09

I've been fighting the tat in cupboard for space for decades to get that chunky piece of plastic and wire in there, finally succeeded! It cools down, gets brutally upended over the sink, has it's crumb hoard knocked out of it, then back in its carrier bag it goes and back in the cupboard. My total workspace are is very low, so I've gained a lot

magicthree · 19/02/2023 02:12

Yes. I don't have toast very often, but even if I had it daily I would still keep it in a cupboard as I would rather have bench space. I only have a jug on the bench, and it gets used multiple times a day, and doesn't take much space. I've never had my toaster on the bench all the time in my 63 and a half years, and most people I know don't either.
