Do you put your toaster in a cupboard

...when it's not in use? I thought it was odd but thinking about it it would be good to have a clear worktop

God no. Toaster gets so much use in our house . Crumpets, tea cakes and soon hot cross buns and let’s not forget the toast !

Pseudonamed · 18/02/2023 23:18

No but I was raised Catholic lol The standing joke, or it seems to be more correct than joke really in Northern Ireland is that if it is on the counter top you are Catholic and if in the press (cos we do not have cupboards) you are Protestant. It is mentioned in Derry girls at least once :)

Cornishclio · 18/02/2023 23:19

No we don't put it away as it gets used most days and sometimes twice. We have lots of work surfaces so it is not in the way. We have a toaster, kettle and tea/coffee caddies out as well as our coffee machine and sandwich maker. All the rest are integrated but we have three long work surfaces.

lauryloo · 18/02/2023 23:20

Yes. It's a Protestant thing according to Derry girls 🤣

Emerald237 · 18/02/2023 23:20

If you put it in the cupboard when you're not using it you're a Protestant.

The board speaks the truth.

Runnerduck34 · 18/02/2023 23:22

If my head is spinning at the thought of keeping your toaster in a cupboard it positively explodes at the thought of keeping your kettle in there🤣🤣
Both of mine are on the worktop, don't have cupboard space for them anyway, to have an " appliance garage" you must have a massive kitchen with loads of cupboards.

LittleBearPad · 18/02/2023 23:24

Yes. It’s great.

Protestants love gardening. My Catholic grandfather would be turning in his grave! His garden was his pride and joy 😂❤️

Ours lives in a cupboard.
i like the surfaces as clear as possible
id love a boiler tap to get rid of the kettle but maybe if I get a new kitchen I can wangle one…

I love a clear surface bit it’s pretty impossible with my family. They are messy buggers.

Explain the love of the clear worktop to me. Is it a cultural thing? I had just moved to rural England (not from the UK) and was invited for coffee by new neighbours, and was intrigued to find a completely empty kitchen — nothing on worksurfaces or table or sills. Not so much as a plant, radio or tea towel in sight. The kettle, toaster etc all lived in drawers. I’d first assumed they’d also just moved in, the place seemed so empty, but they’d lived there 22 years. They clearly just preferred the kitchen to look empty.

LucyWhipple · 18/02/2023 23:25

Yes! I love a clear worktop and hate a cluttered kitchen. Microwave in the utility, toaster in a cupboard, no kettle as we’ve got a boiling water tap. We’re lucky to have lots of cupboard space & a big kitchen so it’s easy to put things away.

Ketchupwee · 18/02/2023 23:28

Nope, not enough cupboard space

For me I just really don’t like clutter. It makes me feel trapped. And as soon as you allow a little bit, it breeds! Most people’s kitchens are cluttered, and then they become dumping grounds for other stuff - you see it all the time on Rightmove, stuff on top of the fridge etc, just stuff, everywhere!

that doesn’t mean my home is sterile - I do have an artfully placed succulent display on the kitchen unit, and a carefully arranged bowl of fruit…but everything else is clear and has a clearly defined home.

But that works for me, and other people love having stuff around. There isn’t a right or a wrong, just preferences. As long as people are happy with their homes, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Cheeriochoc · 18/02/2023 23:30

No it’s usually in use every day and always full of crumbs

Peachy2005 · 18/02/2023 23:31

I don’t keep it in cupboard, my mum does…the main thing is the toaster has to live on a tray. If it’s staying out at all times, the tray catches the crumbs for easy cleaning, and if you’re moving it in and out of a cupboard, you need the tray even more. Trick is getting the right tray aesthetically. My mum has a stainless steel tray; I’ve used a tiny baking tray in the past but my current toaster is bigger so I have a Joseph Joseph chopping/ carving board that’s slanted with a lip and that’s perfect.

BuddhaAtSea · 18/02/2023 23:32

That makes me a Protestant then 😂😂😂 I don’t have toast that often, maybe if the bread has gone a bit stale. Sometimes for crumpets for a quick lunch, I also keep the pitta bread in the freezer so sometimes I toast it from frozen
@CrackedLookingGlass it makes it easier to clean and maintain hygienic standards, if there’s not a lot of stuff on the counters.

Upsidedownagain · 18/02/2023 23:32

Never occurred to me. But we use it everyday more or less, so I wouldn't anyway.

SunshineLoving · 18/02/2023 23:33

Nope. We have toast everyday here so putting it in a cupboard everyday would make a lot of mess with crumbs.

I can only imagine that this would be practical if you hardly had toast.

Crispynoodle · 18/02/2023 23:34

Microwave in a cupboard, toaster out am I a Buddhist?

CharmedUndead · 18/02/2023 23:35

We don't make toast often - maybe once a week at most - so yes it lives in a cupboard.

I don't mind the kettle out because we use it several times a day. Ditto the sugar bowl and the fruit bowl. But if something is not in constant use, it gets put away.

The board speaks the truth.

My MIL is a Protestant and she doesn’t keep her toaster in a cupboard. I wish she did cos it’s an original from at least the 80s (maybe earlier) and it’s hideous. Also she doesn’t use a tray for underneath it so the countertop is just a crumby mess…it’s the worst of all worlds. She turns off the power to the toaster’s plug socket when not using toaster: I find that strange…wonder if that’s a Protestant thing…

ThePastKnocks · 18/02/2023 23:39

If you don't use it often enough to keep it in a cupboard, why have one?

The crumb catcher would piss me off on our old one and would burn and smoke from a single crumb if it were in there. One day I had enough and got rid of it to teach it a lesson, we turned to grilling toast instead. It takes the same amount of time, granted you have to flip it but no loss of worktop or cupboard space. Yes, it may use more energy but we don't use it enough to notice.

StillMedusa · 18/02/2023 23:42

Mine sits on top of the microwave!! Shoot me now Grin
They match and it takes up less space that way... (and the toaster is used several times a day whereas the microwave isn't)

PickAChew · 18/02/2023 23:43

I'm an atheist and everything used at least once a week is lined up on one side of my kitchen. I don't live on Instagram.

SouperNoodle · 18/02/2023 23:47

Yes. It lives in the cereal cupboard.
It had never occurred to me to do this until I lived with one of my exes and he did it.
I keep most appliances away except for the kettle and microwave.
