Ha! I toasted it and ate it with marmite on.

Read this and thought no wonder we are a shambles -

"We've had 5 PMs since 2016 - as many as from 1979 to the referendum.

We've had 7 Chancellors in 7 years - more than in the previous 30 years.

Over 160 ministerial resignations or sackings since June 2016; two a month, on average.

This paralysis, too, is a cost of Brexit."

I'm a big fan of turnip - steamed and mashed with carrot and then throw in a James Martin quantity of butter 🧈 Sadly I can't persuade my family to join me on the turnip wagon.
We really need a turnip emoji.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2023 12:05

Posters are really showing their privilege, toasters and James Martin quantity butter, whatever happened to the blitz brexit spirit.

Tea lights and lard!

Tea lights?!

Blossomtoes · 24/02/2023 12:15

Tea lights?!

Definitely not tea lights. Reeds hand plucked from the freezing cold and polluted nearby river, dried (after months) by the heat of the matches you are using for warmth, dipped in whatever leftover grease you have that cannot be eaten. Then lit.

Chevyimpala67 · 24/02/2023 14:04

I remember my late dad telling me awful stories of the hardship of family members and peers during the 1940s/50s...
Bread and butter with sugar sprinkled on.
Or just with beef dripping on. That's it. For a whole day. Shoes held together with duct tape/cardboard and newspaper.
The first new pair of shoes my aunt (his sister) ever had were her wedding shoes.
How desperately sad and rage inducing that many kids are back there.
In the uk. In the 21st century.
I am beyond rage. Or sadness. I feel revolutionary.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2023 14:50

The only people who think fondly of those times are the 'I am alright Jack' types, of which there are plenty on MN.

I don't want to break @theresecoffey's heart, but we do not have enough turnips.

Do you need to make someone feel bad about complaining?

A bit of BS (Blitz Spirit) for you...

Wait a minute though- was TC clear on this matter? Did she mean the little white and purple turnips? Or the big yellow and purple swedes? It might make all the difference. 🤔

Chevyimpala67 · 24/02/2023 15:49

Didn't the Romans bring turnips to Britannia?

borntobequiet · 24/02/2023 16:01

And people ask what the Romans did for us. Dear dear.

Good point - it seems there are 30 different types so she'll need to be specific.

I had no idea the Romans brought turnips here! How very continental of us to embrace them.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2023 16:08

She might have considered swedes to be too EU

I'm a fan of a turnip if we mean suede!!! And yes mashed with carrot with anchor butter (one thing I've yet to compromise on! And salt!

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2023 16:18

Neeps and tatties, I quite like that.

A staple food in Holland is carrot and potato mash, cheap and filling but I hated the taste. A friend of mine recommended a dollop of mayonaise on top, that's what her family did to disguise the taste Grin

Notonthestairs · 24/02/2023 16:18

Oh my goodness, you are right I meant swede not turnips! No idea why I call them turnips.

£40,000 for a shooting party & £50,000 for Abu Dhabi F1?
Fucks sakes.

Amazing that Barclay had time to attend fundraisers but not meet with junior doctors this week.

BREAKING:

Rishi Sunak has spoken to Ursula von der Leyen this evening

The call was positive with 'good progress', further discussion in coming days

No 10 says a deal hasn't been done, but it sounds like it's very, very close now

@DuncinToffee you mean hutspot. I could never stand it either. Fortunately neither could my dad, so we had boerenkoolstamppot instead (cooked curly kale and mash mixed, usually served with traditional smoked sausage (kielbasa like thing, very nice).

dontcallmelen · 24/02/2023 18:40

Food shopping in my quite large local sainsburys was mission this afternoon no fresh veg apart from potatoes & carrots no turnips or swede.
No salad items, some apples half crate of tangerines & few mouldy looking bananas. Bread shelves practically empty apart from some small hovis loafs.
the meat aisle, had beef burgers some very small lamb joints, no beef or mince did spot some pork chops.

Yes, hutspot en klapstuk.

I like boerenkoolstamppot and still eat it on a regular basis. Curly kale is very fashionable now Smile
