Was chatting to a friend about this. Are they a bit naff really?
DH and half my town seem to love them, I’m not fussed.
Dont know how to do a poll but was just wondering what you all think (obv not a first world issue I realise)

Disguising the car’s age? GrinConfused

So you don’t mind looking like a complete knob to most of us just as long as we don’t click your car is - the horror - old?

Someone in my road lives in a house (inherited from grandparents) that has a name which is a combination of 3 letters from both of her paternal grandparents' and her dad's names in big gold letters on the gates, and she drives a car with a private plate that was her grandad's that's been in the family 40+ years

Big gold letters? Cringe!

Roselilly36 · 24/01/2023 07:21

They were really popular, I don’t think they are so much now. A little bit dated now perhaps.

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 07:24

DS was thinking about having one as a 21st birthday present and he found one he wanted. But then he decided it was just naff to have one.

Polgara2 · 24/01/2023 07:26

I love mine! It has my name on it and was a gift. I don't really care if anyone else doesn't like it tbh. I guess some can look a bit naff but so what?

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 24/01/2023 07:28

If they are two or three letters and a number ie DG 12 , fine. However, trying to spell something using dodgy spacing are highly naff.
As for those saying they are a waste of money, I dont think they are any more of a waste of money than any other asset.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/01/2023 19:16

Well my grandad got one and then I inherited it as we have the same initials so I actually live mine.
My parents have them and I think they are quite cool. But I saw a VAG the other day and wondered wtf anyone would be ok driving that around lol.

I don't mind them! I think if you have strong opinions against them it says more about you then them

Seen VAG and also a WTF...😁

BodyShapeWoes · 24/01/2023 07:36

I love mine, naff or not 😂

To be fair the original number plate wasn’t any better…

Off to google number plates for my kids

GreenWheat · 24/01/2023 07:37

I silently judge those who have them.

Volkswagen Audi Group

The enthusiasts are very enthusiastic. 😂

SweetNaffAll · 24/01/2023 07:42

Unless you're generally loaded, and have nothing else to waste your money on, then I find them cringey.

It's like having a designer wallet worth £400, with only fiver to your name.

YungDumbThrills · 24/01/2023 07:42

I love mine. I bought it 15 years ago with the money my grandmother left me, it reminds me of her.

SoupDragon · 24/01/2023 07:45

MissMaple82 · 23/01/2023 21:33

Well, simply because they are particularly naff

I bet you own a lot of things I think are spectacularly naff.

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 07:53

People own loads of naff things, but they aren't stuck to their cars for all to see.

Forever42 · 24/01/2023 07:55

I think they are the epitome of pointless displays of wealth. All cars come with a perfectly good numberplate. Just donate the money to charity if you have that much to waste.

benten54 · 24/01/2023 08:06

Terribly non-u.

I used to drive past a couple of Bentleys parked in Chelsea on a daily basis. One was '2B' and other 'NOT 2B'. They made me smile.

Never found out which thesp they belonged to.

Having declared them most uncouth I have to admit that they work well for fleets. I used to manage the car fleet for a well known sports organisation. It was far easier for us to refer to BALLZ 16 and BALLZ 32 and for staff to locate them in the car park rather than R294 LGT

I think a lot of people have them so you don't know how old their car is

This . ..I know a few people who have them for this reason.

Heronswater · 24/01/2023 08:15

Everygrainofsand1 · 23/01/2023 19:32

They are probably comparable to handbags

For me, they’re the equivalent of calling your house Anfield or Stamford Bridge.

I've seen the 2B and Not 2 B ones too - I read a rumour they were Kevin Spacey's but no clue if that's true.

I don't really understand the point of them and I think the fact they are called Vanity Plates in the US says it all really, but if that's what people want to spend their money on, it's not really any of my business.

However, I find it weird because if you drive like a total tit - as many people with them seem to - then it's far easier to remember W4NKER than AB12CDE 😉

Shitfather · 24/01/2023 08:27

I would never own one but I absolutely love seeing them, particularly when there is a profanity or sex reference involved. Near me, there used to be “G 5pot”. It put a smile on my face.

No, often they are wearing them or carrying them.

Hahaha.

The good old 'just donate to charity'

You know,'over the years I have probably financed more to charity than I spent on my numberplate. Why the assumption that I chose between that and charity?

I make a monthly payment to women's aid,
I'm also disabled and on a very low income so my reg doesn't indicate wealth.

I like my reg, it's on my motability car (another thing for people to froth about) - I used to have one on my business vehicle that was perfect for the job too.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 24/01/2023 08:34

My mum and gran bought mine as a present for a milestone birthday several years ago. You wouldn't know it was personal to me unless you knew me. It's my children's initials, the year and a shortened version of my name. I do drive an old car though, so it doesn't look out of place - it probably would be more obviously personal if it was on a new car. I do like it as it's easier to remember the reg when using pay screen machines and getting insurance quotes.

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2023 08:35

SoupDragon · 24/01/2023 08:29

No, often they are wearing them or carrying them.

Exactly. But mainly naff stuff is kept in the house. 😂

You must be near me. Not seen it for ages.
