Was chatting to a friend about this. Are they a bit naff really?
DH and half my town seem to love them, I’m not fussed.
Dont know how to do a poll but was just wondering what you all think (obv not a first world issue I realise)

I find them naff and a bit 'wannabe'

NancyJoan · 23/01/2023 21:12

Horrible. Lots of parents at my DC’s school have them. Seriously naff, all of them.

WestBridgewater · 23/01/2023 21:14

My SIL bought my brother one with a completely different name. It’s sort of supposed to be the name of the character in a film he likes. It’s not this but it’s like having NL18BRE for Nacho Libre and his name is Kevin. It makes no sense unless she’s planning on changing his name for his birthday.

thirstyformore · 23/01/2023 21:17

I have one. Quite like it. Spells my name. Don't really get the vitriol on MN about personalised regs. Most aren't that expensive (I think I have handbags the same price as my number plate, my watch was definitely more). It's just a thing to spend money on. Lots of things are pointless and cost money. Not sure why people fixate on numbers plates as being particularly naff.

FawnFrenchieMum · 23/01/2023 21:17

We have one on our car. I bought it many years ago as a 30th birthday gift for DH when he had his own nice car. It’s his first name (no spacing changes or screws required!). Now it’s on the family shared car but he still loves it. We recently changed cars and it didn’t feel like ‘ours’ until the plate was on it as we’ve owned it so long now.
As others have said, it hides the age of the car too. People were often shocked our last car was almost 7 years old.

Amybelle88 · 23/01/2023 21:19

Proper naff. Make me cringe.

WestBridgewater · 23/01/2023 21:21

And I’ve just remembered my brother bought one where if it was spaced illegally and a screw was put through a 0 to make it look like C it was his son’s initial and surname. When he split from wife 1 (wife 2 bought the plate previously mentioned) she got the car and then sold it with the number plate attached so lost it.

Does it really spell your name or is it TH17STY so the car behind is squinting trying to work out what it’s meant to be?

Lost123454 · 23/01/2023 21:26

Most of them are shit and look awful

Only good one I've ever seen was TUR8O on a Porsche

4D plates, the only thing worse. They let you know there's a chav in the vicinity

MissMaple82 · 23/01/2023 21:30

I recently saw some t#@t in a car with one that spelled out HANSOME or something along them lines.. 😳

Well, simply because they are particularly naff

saraclara · 23/01/2023 21:38

I assume that anyone who has one, has an unhealthily sized ego. There is no reason to have one other than to say "look at me!"

Follycastle · 23/01/2023 21:40

So so so naff.

Karma2023 · 23/01/2023 21:42

Naff..would people have nameplates on houses or on bags or a watch...so why a car?

I think it's the opposite of classy

TigerDroveAgain · 23/01/2023 21:45

I think they're generally awful but I quite like some: eg MAG 1 C which I saw on a roller or similar car.

I have genuinely seen A1 BU, which I assumed belonged to JustineGrin

Causewithoutarebel · 23/01/2023 21:48

There’s a terrible one local to me, it’s a red sports car with the reg BYG 60Y

PassAnotherJumper · 23/01/2023 21:49

I wouldn't spend my money on one but don't really have an opinion when I see someone else with one.

larchforest · 23/01/2023 21:51

P16 STY

PuppyMonkey · 23/01/2023 21:51

There's one round here that spells BELL END - I mean, why would you?

Well TBF that’s what most people who have them are imho.Grin

I think that one belonged to Paul Daniels.

Hallmark1234 · 23/01/2023 22:00

Many years ago I used to think they were naff, but I started to notice that lots of cars had them, which altered my view. I also lived in an area where a lot of people were quite snobby and looked down their nose at you if you drove an old car, so I decided to get one when I changed my car. I still have it all these years later. It's my initials, so personal to me and I'll keep it no matter what I'm driving. In fact there is so much snobbery around the age of car people drive, that I think everyone should have their own personal plate that is just transferred to their next vehicle.

MrsJBaptiste · 23/01/2023 22:06

More cars have them than not these days so I'm not sure the 'naff' argument is that valid anymore 🤷‍♀️

ginislife · 23/01/2023 22:06

Oh good, I'm naff. I always swore id never have one as I was often places I perhaps shouldn't be and might get spotted. I'm old and boring now so I treated myself because I spotted a perfect one for me. And I don't care 😂😂

User1754875 · 23/01/2023 22:08

it's to hide the cars age

Hallmark1234 · 23/01/2023 22:10

Way back in the day we used to think mobile phones were a bit pretentious and rolled our eyes at people talking loudly into one, but no one bats an eyelid now.

I think it's the same for personalised plates because they're much more common than they were!
