Was chatting to a friend about this. Are they a bit naff really?
DH and half my town seem to love them, I’m not fussed.
Dont know how to do a poll but was just wondering what you all think (obv not a first world issue I realise)

Mine is on a Bentley.

I should point out it’s not my Bentley.

piebald · 23/01/2023 19:25

i hate them just looks like flashing the cash , my EXH asked me (jokingly) if I would buy him one so I said yes— I will buy you TO 553R

Oakbeam · 23/01/2023 19:26

Live and let live. I don’t have any strong opinions either way.

Some are so subtle/tenuous that I often don’t register them as personalised plates unless it is pointed out to me.

nancy75 · 23/01/2023 19:26

My dad has one, bought it years ago for 50 quid, it’s a very old one that spells a word & is his initials. He has previously been offered £75k for it - I don’t think he regards that 50 quid as waste of money!

Everygrainofsand1 · 23/01/2023 19:27

A lot of them are only about £500 so I suppose it depends what you want to spend your money on

orbitalcrisis · 23/01/2023 19:27

They're a great way of showing you have WAY more money then sense! I appreciate the advance warning of the terrible driving I'm likely to encounter!

cravingtoblerone · 23/01/2023 19:29

Think they are awful and a dreadful waste of money.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 23/01/2023 19:29

I bought a brand new car and was hoping for a "comedy" plate "FRO" or something. Didn't get one.

I do think they're a bit naff but neighbour has one that spells her first and middle names which is quite impressive (the "s" is a 5 but she hasn't buggered about with it).

Oakbeam · 23/01/2023 19:30

So are a lot of handbags.

Moon5 · 23/01/2023 19:30

So tacky

CastleTower · 23/01/2023 19:30

Naff naff naff.

However, extremely easy to remember to report their terrible driving (if applicable), so that's kind of handy. I've had to do this more than once in fact.

Motheranddaughter · 23/01/2023 19:31

I love them
Great way to figure out people to avoid 🤣

I hate them with a passion

Nat6999 · 23/01/2023 19:31

I was lucky, mine was on the car when I bought it & just happened to be my initial, I sold it when I got rid of the car & got £550 after all the costs for getting the car changed back to a normal reg.

TeddyTrucks · 23/01/2023 19:32

They are cringeworthy.

Especially the ones which begin B1G, BO55 or (the worst imo) MR5. I bet the latter are all presents from the "hubster".

Ugh.

Everygrainofsand1 · 23/01/2023 19:32

They are probably comparable to handbags

Nineteen60s · 23/01/2023 19:33

Depends a bit on how it’s done - if it is just your initials on a fairly normal numberplate, then it’s just about ok.
If it spells something like your whole first name, or another word, by altering the spacing or the screws to make a letter out of a number, then it’s absolutely and completely naff!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/01/2023 19:33

My DH has one and so does my mum but they’re quite good ones. I find them a bit tacky and some of my family have truly awful ones that barely spell anything that resembles their name.

DH’s one is worth quite a lot more than he paid for it.

what I hate though is the way everyone knows where you are when you’re in your car or it’s parked somewhere. I live in a small town and know a lot of people. Hate the thought of random people knowing I’m in the supermarket or going to the vet etc.

LoveBluey · 23/01/2023 19:34

I don't get the appeal. Apart from remembering my number plate for car parks and the like it literally makes no difference to me. I can't say my life would be enhanced in any way if my car number plate had my name / initials etc. I can think of lots of things I'd rather spend my money on. I feel the same way about designer handbags.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 19:35

Hi, lovely MNers - I'm after some honest opinions about a name for our new ickle bubs when he or she arrives.

I've always been a fan of unique names and I've like totally fallen in love with the name LW56RXV, which I think would be equally beautiful for a boy or a girl. I can't tell you where I got the serendipitous inspiration for it, as that would be totes outing; but I'd just love to know if there's any obscure reason that anybody can possibly think of why we shouldn't use this lovely name?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 19:35

Oops, sorry - posted on wrong thread! Wine

DashingWhiteSergeant · 23/01/2023 19:38

I bought my husband one for a big birthday about 15 years ago - he loves it, and thinks it’s v special

vitahelp · 23/01/2023 19:39

Everygrainofsand1 · 23/01/2023 19:14

I think a lot of people have them so you don't know how old their car is

This is the main reason I have one 😂 although sadly anyone who knows a bit about cars can tell my car isn’t the latest model!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 19:39

I once saw one that spelled out 'Nigel', but with a random 'u' in there as well. I did cringe a bit for the owner.

On the other hand, I saw a sign-painted car belonging to a health-food cafe in Mid-Scotland with the reg UR02FAT - pure genius!
