Was chatting to a friend about this. Are they a bit naff really?
DH and half my town seem to love them, I’m not fussed.
Dont know how to do a poll but was just wondering what you all think (obv not a first world issue I realise)

Exactly. But mainly naff stuff is kept in the house. 😂

Nope.

TeddyTrucks · 23/01/2023 19:32

They are cringeworthy.

Especially the ones which begin B1G, BO55 or (the worst imo) MR5. I bet the latter are all presents from the "hubster".

Ugh.

Or maybe they just bought the car in Manchester? You can hardly cross the road in greater Manc without encountering a MR5

HumptyNumpty76 · 24/01/2023 10:05

I have one but nobody would know it was a private plate if they didn't know my full name. Only paid £250 for it from inheritance from my father. I love it.

xogossipgirlxo · 24/01/2023 10:19

They are very lame. Especially those where you put your name on. Then everyone knows that idiot who parked near pedestrian crossing is Lynn/Peter or whoever.

user1497787065 · 24/01/2023 10:45

A complete and utter waste of money and prefer the relative anonymity of a standard plate.

They’re only a waste of money if they don’t go up in value. Which they do. Substantially in the last few years.

Which suggest to me that there is a market for them outside of the MN judgerati

Blueisthecolor · 24/01/2023 12:15

Yip it is. Unless I cld get one that said my name even then it's still a bit naf isn't it lol.

I once worked with a guy and he was Tom his reg was THO M4S which I actually thought was pretty cool. It was also a porsche he drove! Was a lovely guy though and I though well that's the way to do a private plate!

I've always thought it cld be to disguise how old the car was especially if it's a more luxury brand. I know my colleague got his brand new though as new plate was on it before he got his private plate.
M that's the other thing it's a royal dad to have to register it ok to a new vehicle every time I change cars and think it costs a few quid too!

BasiliskStare · 24/01/2023 12:19

Many years ago I saw a Japanese man in a car and the plate was FUJ1

Goodness knows how much that must have cost him.

It would not be something I would spend my money on but if people do - let them. Their business

newtb · 23/01/2023 19:54

I've seen V11GRA on a Porsche and
V6CUL on an Alfa V6, cul means arse in French.
The worst was either 1OBE or OBE 1 on either a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. Thought if you got an honour you were supposed not to boast about it. Tosser

Haha if it's OBE 1 I know of him and he lives locally and is an estate agent

They were really popular, I don’t think they are so much now. A little bit dated now perhaps.

Nahh not dated, I think. They are popular with immigrant communities in London - I’ve seen GO 5IRYA, IR4Q (and variations of both), RU551A (which was removed after the war began), etc.
This morning I saw MR 60LD.
I love spotting them!

balloontrip · 24/01/2023 14:09

I always laugh on these threads at the registrations people claimed to have seen. Half of them are not UK format, of any kind, but we won't let that get in that way of a good story.

Shade17 · 24/01/2023 14:14

It wasn’t that, must’ve been something similar like THO 114S and fucked about with.

Again, the only one of those that could exist is GO51 RYA.

A nice dateless 2x2 or 3x1 plate correctly spaced is lovely. Some bastardised illegally spaced mess that kind of looks like a name/word if you squint is just naff shite.

DesertIslandCondiment · 24/01/2023 14:18

Ours is not on a car and and I love ours.

TenPenceMix · 24/01/2023 16:27

I love the fact that A1 must be worth an absolute fortune, it's on a 2007 Mini Cooper that's only done 2800 miles!

Brilliant.

ChickenGotLegs · 24/01/2023 16:50

I bought one a few years ago as a present to myself for my birthday. It actually matches the car I drive so not personal to me but I still haven't put it on the car as I feel like a bit of a show off tbh 😆 it is a really good plate for the car tho

I think they are the epitome of pointless displays of wealth. All cars come with a perfectly good numberplate. Just donate the money to charity if you have that much to waste.

They can be an asset though.
The value of mine has increased from 3k to over 5k.

dew141 · 24/01/2023 18:16

We had a GOV and number which I think was owned by our very own drug lord. Nothing like the confidence to draw attention to your illicit activities.

Two friends went for three letter nicknames and 69. Nice.

My late uncle had the initials SUJ and two numbers which he described as personalised to him. Except it didn't match any of his initials (and a little niche in terms of finding another Sarah Ursula Jones or whatever). Still miss some of his sayings, they were fantastic.

RandomPerson42 · 24/01/2023 18:16

Been thinking about buying a new car and using my old number plate from a car 20 years old, can’t stand number plate date snobbery.

RandomPerson42 · 24/01/2023 18:17

Number plate is just random letters btw, nothing personal about it.

🤣 it think so too…..i am wondering if I could get L05 ER - probably get vetoed straight away by DVLA, apparently they do that with anything considered even slightly ‘ offensive ‘

CocoFifi · 24/01/2023 18:19

To me they are pretentious and a lot of times used to disguise the age of a car. Part of modern society and wanting to look well off even if you are in debt up to your eyes

Sexypyjamas · 24/01/2023 18:28

Naff.
Any wanker I've had the misfortune of crossing paths with has a personal number plate. Just saying.

You couldn’t have that because it doesn’t meet any UK format.

VickerishAllsort · 24/01/2023 18:50

I'm aware a lot of people think they are naff, but I do have one.
Many years ago, buying a new car, the dealer had a list of number plates that he could allocate as cars were sold.
He noticed that the letters were my initials and by coincidence the other letter and number made dh's.
So we paid about £100 to have that one, and have transferred it whenever we've changed cars since.
