Was chatting to a friend about this. Are they a bit naff really?
DH and half my town seem to love them, I’m not fussed.
Dont know how to do a poll but was just wondering what you all think (obv not a first world issue I realise)

Love mine too.

SouperNoodle · 23/01/2023 20:19

I think that they're a bit cringe tbh but DH absolutely LOATHES them

illiterato · 23/01/2023 20:20

We had emergency sewage works on our road and all the pumping tankers had (eg) T98 POO number plates which I thought showed a sense of humour by the company.

slightlybonkersmum · 23/01/2023 20:22

I have a personalised plate with my toddlers name. It will go to him in future and he will know his mummy used to drive around with that number plate that is now his.

There's a car frequently parked round the corner from us that has POO in its number plate.
It's a Fiat 500 so useless for pumping sewage.

There is also a black Range Rover that has managed to create SKIN TV as a plate. I can only assume the owner owns some sort of porn channel. Or maybe they are a celebrity dermatologist...

lanbro · 23/01/2023 20:27

I have one, I fancied one, could afford it, so bought it. Pretty much like everything available to buy which isn't necessary. Presumably all those people saying they're a waste of money never ever buy anything they like, just because?

MissMarpleRocks · 23/01/2023 20:27

I have an 18 plate that I got as a memory for my baby that never made it that would have been 18. It’s his initials with mine & dhs so it’s my little memory of him.

ClockingTime · 23/01/2023 20:29

I can't say I'm bothered about them one way or another.

Fizbosshoes · 23/01/2023 20:31

I think they seem a bit of a waste of time/money but you could say that about all sorts.
Some are a bit tacky but initials/numbers are fairly inoffensive

Penguinsmum · 23/01/2023 20:36

Me and my husband Love both of ours. But we are very tacky low down Type people! But interesting comment someone made that we must be bad drivers as we have personalized plates. We are both sensible courteous and very boring drivers never even a single penalty point or fine! 🙂

ApricotCrush · 23/01/2023 20:43

Mine is the model of my car and who it belongs to all in 6 digits with no screws or dodgy spacing. I love it.

AuntieJoyce · 23/01/2023 20:44

I got one for my birthday. Didn’t ask for a want it. I don’t mind it now. It’s worth about three grand more than what it cost.

Same as Rolexes really isn’t it people find them a bit naff but actually they are investments in the current market so who’s the idiot

LynetteScavo · 23/01/2023 20:51

I have one in retention. It was a gift- I secretly love it and, if I plan to keep a car for a while, I'll put it on the car. The downside is as people will know it's me (This is a small town) I feel I have to drive absolutely perfectly at all times.

I couldn't care less whether other people have one or not. A bit like I don't care whether other people are overweight, or wear shoes I don't like. It has no impact on me.

DS and DH also have one each on retention. DH would sell for the right price. He'll definitely have made a profit.

I don't understand designer handbags either but at least they serve a purpose I suppose.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/01/2023 19:33

My DH has one and so does my mum but they’re quite good ones. I find them a bit tacky and some of my family have truly awful ones that barely spell anything that resembles their name.

DH’s one is worth quite a lot more than he paid for it.

what I hate though is the way everyone knows where you are when you’re in your car or it’s parked somewhere. I live in a small town and know a lot of people. Hate the thought of random people knowing I’m in the supermarket or going to the vet etc.

Think they're really tacky.

Also totally agree, I know plenty of people with them and always recognise their cars everywhere in the local area- incredibly identifiable!

MrsKrankyPants · 23/01/2023 20:54

I can get one in my full first and last name for about £400. I have a short first and last name. Maiden name was longer.

If I didn't HAVE to register it to a car, I would buy it.

I remember plates very well and don't want everyone knowing my name.

larchforest · 23/01/2023 20:56

If the letters just so happen to be your initials, fine. Vintage plates, fine.

Anything else is a bit wanky imo.

Oakbeam · 23/01/2023 20:57

They share a purpose with private plates. The owner gets pleasure out of them.

You can carry your stuff around in a designer handbag.

You can carry stuff around in a bin bag.

You don’t have to. You can just pay retention.

StubbleAndSqueak · 23/01/2023 21:02

I like them but haven't got one

FlairBand · 23/01/2023 21:03

Depends on the plate tbh. Some are awful but some are great

Both do basically the same thing as the standard version surely?

In the same way you could spend £20 or 20k on a bag or a watch (both bags will hold your belongings, both watches will tell you the time) you could spend 100s or 1000s on a number plate or keep the one it came with.
