last night we cleaned him out and my daughter didn’t close the lid and he must of escaped over night, we’ve checked everywhere no doors were left open. I’ve literally searched every room cupboard? Any tips

As a child I once found mine under the kick boards in the kitchen. He'd made a little nest out of dog fur and a postage stamp. Looked most put out when we found him after a week!

Raindancer411 · 21/01/2023 18:03

Ours was under a sofa!! Put some food out in his cage on the floor

I’ve checked and no sign I just don’t understand how he can be gone without any doors open I’m on bloody hamster patrol 🐹

Years ago, my sister's hamster escaped and went under the gas fire and through the hole into the bottom of the chimney. I don't think we saw that one again... 🥺

Another one escaped and was found inside the hem of our floor length curtains along with quitea few poos!

Hamsters are little Houdinis!

Found mines in the sofa and another time in the pan bit under the oven (years ago when ovens were like that!). They like cozy places.

I haven’t got a fire thank god and I know if he returns that will be his new name

Put out his favourite food eg some strongly smelling herbs that he likes.
Sir quietly in the room in the dark, listening carefully. Set up camp all night if you need to. Soon you will hear him scratching.

Afolnerd · 21/01/2023 18:06

Both times my daughters gerbils escaped they were behind the fridge. I think they were attracted to the warmth.
He will probably be fast asleep somewhere at the moment so I would leave it until a bit later and then go through all possible rooms really quietly and hopefully you will be able to hear him. Make sure you put food and water down for him as well.

Pinkywoo · 21/01/2023 18:07

Look high, mine was found on top of a wardrobe!

I will do he ventures out normally around 10pm I’ve left food and his cage open

Mine ended up under the floorboards when he escaped. My dad wasn't best pleased that he had to take a few up.
I hope you find him soon

Soubriquet · 21/01/2023 18:09

Get a washing up bowl and get a ramp up the bowl.

Add food. Leave where hamster was last seen.

He can climb in but can’t climb out

gethaggling · 21/01/2023 18:10

Put some food he likes in a bucket, and build a staircase of books (or similar) up to the bucket. Hamster climbs books to get into bucket, but can't get back out again. You do need a big enough bucket, but we've used this successfully in the past.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 21/01/2023 18:10

Oh yes, one escaped for three days and we had to take up a floorboard - he was hungry so came running over straight away. Second one we set a food trap - slope of wood leading up to a mixing bowl with food up the slope. Found him in there in the morning.
Don't give up hope yet! They don't usually come out until late though.

RandomUsernameHere · 21/01/2023 18:10

If you have no luck, try closing all the doors in the house and put out food in each room. If any food is gone, you will know which room he is in so at least it narrows down the search!

Bowbellsx · 21/01/2023 18:10

I will try that there’s just no way he’s gone though a door as it was last night and they was all shut since

I was just coming on to say look high as well! A friend had lost her hamster and a couple of days later he fell off the curtain track thankfully onto the sofa! They had looked everywhere but not the curtain tracks obviously. Good luck with your search.

Mummyoftwo91 · 21/01/2023 18:11

I've lost mine before, he flew off a chest of drawers, down the stairs, past 2 cats and set up camp in the pantry (inside his bag of food!)

Found mine climbing the curtains a week after it went missing!

How long should I give before I presume the worst?

Our hamsters have been behind books in bookcases, behind TV, under kitchen floor (for about 3 days then reappeared), in wall cavity behind the toilet, in the sofa - they always reappeared. Fingers crossed 🤞

FallonofDynasty · 21/01/2023 18:17

Ours decamped under floorboards and another time was found under the sofa (didn't even know he was missing that time). Went upstairs once too.
We tried the food in a bucket trick, that didn't work in our case, but definitely worth a shot.
I think once we left the cage with his food in open and watched out for him heading back.

They do sell humane mouse traps that are good now, maybe that would work if big enough?
