last night we cleaned him out and my daughter didn’t close the lid and he must of escaped over night, we’ve checked everywhere no doors were left open. I’ve literally searched every room cupboard? Any tips

Could he climb in my bed at night I don’t think I like thought of it

He could. Very unlikely though.

SkyLarkDescending · 21/01/2023 20:57

When I was young, our hamster escaped while we were cleaning out. We found it after a week when we noticed a pot plant vibrating. Hammy had dug down to the bottom of the plant and eaten off all the roots. We pulled her out black as soot 😆

DM was incensed as said pot plant was a 20 year old cutting from a relatives plant that had moved abroad and it withered away to nothing.

Should I switch all lights off feels like a military operation 👀

Ours was inside a shoe

Mum97540 · 21/01/2023 21:01

Ours went into a kitchen cupboard and slept in a bowl. Then came out looking for food at night. They bite through furniture. You should hear them later.

I keep all my shoes in a airing cupboard plus I’ve checked

I have a hopeful story for you OP!

My hamster used to bodyslam the cage door sometimes but never actually broke out until one evening when I was just getting ready for a night shift. I went to feed him before work but found the cage door open and him gone, I also have three cats and a dog so I assumed the worst but as soon as I realised he was missing, I sealed off the room his cage was in as I hoped he’d still be in there, laid a sweetcorn trail out on the floor (his favourite!), sealed the room back up again and went to work. Came home the next morning and the sweetcorn was gone! Started searching the room and heard a faint rustling in the wardrobe; found him in a little nest he’d made out of an old roll of wallpaper 🥲 as soon as I got him back in that cage, I chicken wired the door so he couldn’t bash his way back out of it 😂

He was one lucky boy!

Ours got into a cupboard, climbed up the stack of board games, gnawed through the bottom of a drawer (the junk drawer) and was in there. I could hear him (couple of days later). I was convinced if I opened the door I may decapitate him but all was well in the end.

imnottoofussed · 21/01/2023 21:06

Ours went under the bath and into the floorboards. It's came out when we put a bowl of cat food out

He was in my living room (he kept the kids up at night) he was on top of my side board can they jump that far?

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 21/01/2023 21:18

Probably he just came from the room above…

Great that you find it!

girlmumma23 · 21/01/2023 21:18

@Bowbellsx she wasn't inside the fridge but there was a bit at the back she could climb up so she used to just chill there (I'm assuming it was warm) then when it was quiet and she thought the coast was clear she'd come out for a snack.
Try switching all the lights etc off and sitting in silence to see if you can hear it, we had hard floors so I could hear her scurrying about when she got out.

vestanesta · 21/01/2023 21:21

Ours escaped and after some major searching no sign was found. 2 MONTHS later I found her in the cupboard under the sink randomly.

She was terribly skinny and covered in all kinds of crap. I had to brush her off with a toothbrush as she was all matted.

She lived for another 8/9 months after that and was almost 2 when she died so obviously not too damaged.

Mum97540 · 21/01/2023 21:22

I think they can climb maybe? Glad he's found.

ChooChoo0 · 21/01/2023 21:22

Shamelessly place marking… want to be updated on how this pans out 😅

Ours used to come upstairs, I once found one asleep in my knicker drawer. The cage was always on the sideboard but he used to open the cage with his bum, I never knew how he got down or how he got up to my top drawer. Look in warm corners.

Do you mean you’ve found him, or that’s where his cage was? 🤞🏻

Sorry. I thought you meant you'd found him. I'd out the cage on the floor with the door open and a nice bowl of food inside.

Oh he's so cute!
I'm sure he'll turn up eventually, everyone I've ever known have a hamster disappear has found it eventually they just like to explore a bit first.

MoscowMules · 21/01/2023 21:58

He will just go in the cage get the food and leave again.

When mine escaped as a child, my mother put a tall bucket with a ramp into it in the living room, and left some very tasty food in the bottom of the bucket. Irresistible to Mr Hamster 🐹

After a couple of nights we woke up to hamster in the bucket, he'd gone in but was unable to climb back out.
