last night we cleaned him out and my daughter didn’t close the lid and he must of escaped over night, we’ve checked everywhere no doors were left open. I’ve literally searched every room cupboard? Any tips

Definitely can climb stairs.

Ok, since someone mentioned the stew, I will say what happened to a friends hamster.

It managed to escape and she turned the house upside down looking for it.

About 4 days later, she turned on the oven to cook her dinner and whilst it was preheating, she could smell cooking and then burning.

Yep, poor hammy had gotten into the oven and she had cooked it.

She never got another hamster after that. Bit too traumatised

OMG!!

I once had an escapee. Thought had lost him for good. 4 days later I was dying in the lounge having lunch watching tv. Put plate down on floor with a bit of sandwich on it, next thing saw the cheeky sod legging it across the lounge with my leftover sandwich!! Did catch him though. Threw the sandwich away 😆

I clearly wasn't dying in the lounge, I was sitting in there!

Mine escaped when I was a child, he was gone for a week, we had a cat and the front door had been open. We were mourning him - then I heard scratching in the bathroom, DF had to rip off the tiled bath panel but he was in there - he must have got into dome pipe boxing in the kitchen and climbed up to the floor void upstairs, then under the bath.

Don't assume he's not got out of the room he was in, he could be anywhere.

trampoline123 · 21/01/2023 19:59

Hamsters can get in the smallest spaces.

I really hope you find him.

I lost mine as a child and found him an one of those old record players.

Maybe leave some peanut butter out too, they do that with mice so maybe they like it too.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 21/01/2023 20:00

Oh, and check in your shoes before you put them on!! He won't survive your foot going in there too if he's in there.

Bowbellsx · 21/01/2023 20:01

He wasn’t in the oven or fridge

Mine used to escape as a kid. I just had to wait until it was 9-10pm, had all the house dark and quiet and then waited with a torch until I heard him moving around. Usually found him under the fridge or oven.

WhiteFire · 21/01/2023 20:26

It seems curtains are a favourite hiding place, mine used to go there.

Oh and yes they can climb stairs.

This happened to our hamster and we just waited.

In the end he just wandered across the living room like nothing had happened. It turns out he was in the cupboard under the sink, and had made a bed in there lol.

Found ours in the wall. After being missing for three days. Yep, behind the plaster board. Six foot above his cage. No doors. No holes. I had to cut into the wall and release him. He was dusty, fairly hungry and very tired. Lived ages after that. Had to re plaster the utility room after.

ShirleyHolmes · 21/01/2023 20:33

Careful with moving heavy items. Our missing hamster was spotted under a heavy bed with wheels, my stepdad shifted it and squished my hamster. I was 8 and v upset.

Tilllly · 21/01/2023 20:35

We've had them go awol over the years

Smudge was gone a week. Found him stuffing his pouches with winalot, whilst the dog stared sadly

My hamster never escaped but a field mouse did find it's way into our lounge once and set up camp behind a wall unit!

IncessantNameChanger · 21/01/2023 20:47

I knew someone who's hammie went inbetween the skirting boards never to be seen again....

soundsgreektome · 21/01/2023 20:48

I’ve no idea how he got there! I could hear him scratching. Not immediately - three days after he’d gone missing, he started the scratching.
