Tanks or no Tanks for Ukraine?

My view is yes but interested in what the opinion is out there?
What are we prepared to watch unfold in Ukraine? If Russia’s spring offensive works and they roll all the way to the Poland border what do we do then?

Absolutely yes.
It's morally right to help Ukraine.
And if you want to be mercenary about it, if Ukraine lose the war, it will cost the rest of us a whole lot more financially.

The UK does need to ensure it maintains a good level of it's own equipment too. So there are practicalities to consider.

asblindasabat · 20/01/2023 21:22

I’m mixed. Yes because I want us to help them as best as we can, if we were being actively attacked by another country’s military, I’d want other countries to intervene and assist us.

But then I think no maybe we shouldn’t get anymore involved than we already are because surely this will only aggravate Russia more than we already have and then they could start to attack the UK or other NATO countries which, as we already know, would risk a full scale European war?

But we can’t let bullies win

i really don’t see why we need 224 tanks
If Russia is crossing the Chanel having gone through Germany and France I think the game is over.
I would send the lot.

I think we might need them. So no. Maybe half.

Samedaysameshit · 20/01/2023 21:30

I think history shows not getting involved does not make you safe.
I don’t want to see Rishi walking off a plane waving a piece of paper saying he has struck a deal with Putin.

I fear it could all escalate into ww3.

Russia have failed in their war against a country a fraction of their size. They haven't the resources to take on any other countries, let alone NATO.

Ukrainians are dying so our soldiers don't have to. Yes to tanks.

Brahumbug · 20/01/2023 21:33

The trouble is that after years of cut backs our military is in a pitiful state. 224 challenger 2 tanks, at least 50% of which are in no state to be used due to neglect and all of them need modernisation and upgrades. When you consider that in 1980 the army could field 900 Chieftain tanks, you can see the scale of the problem.

Orangesare · 20/01/2023 21:33

I think we need to send some tanks and we probably need to spend a bit more so our army has plenty of resources just in case. I know our government doesn’t like just in case but covid would have been dealt with better if they had been better prepared.

RunningFromInsanity · 20/01/2023 21:39

Give them all the tanks.

If/when someone attacks the U.K., it won’t be by any method that tanks will prevent.

Absolutely!
if it comes to trying to defend Kent from a Russian invasion we are talking trident.
Whats the point in keeping our tanks in sheds?
100 challenger 2 tanks would make a HUGE statement.
we should be brave and take the lead.
We can’t wait for the Germans.

If Russia want to escalate, they will escalate. Providing tanks will have nothing to do with it. Plus, we haven’t “aggravated” Russia - they have invaded a sovereign country. It’s important we are clear about who has done what here.

Of course we haven’t actually aggravated Russia, but they aren’t going to see it like that and they will more than likely see it as us escalating it, even though they started it in the first place

Greenshake · 20/01/2023 22:09

Russia have put out red lines time and time again that have been crossed. We have to stand up to them, as there is simply no alternative.

Coxspurplepippin · 20/01/2023 22:11

Yes, and disappointed that Germany are dithering.

upinaballoon · 20/01/2023 22:19

Yes.

Kareah · 20/01/2023 22:20

No tanks.
To add more tanks will only add to the tank graveyard that is already the Ukraine. Ukraine got most of Russias tanks with anti-armour missiles. Russia has plenty of these missiles too. They’d not hesitate to use them.
We would just be sending tank crews to certain death. Which would lower morale in the Ukraine.

The real military geopolitical objective for the West helping the Ukraine is to weaken Russia, sending tanks would weaken the West as much as the West have weakened Russia. We would give up our advantage and demoralise the Ukraine.

Russia would love us to send tanks in, that is why they are laughing about the tanks.

MagicFox · 20/01/2023 22:22

You shouldn't refer to it as "the Ukraine"

Greenshake · 20/01/2023 22:24

@Kareah its not THE Ukraine. It’s Ukraine.

Tanks are currently on the verge of obsolescence as was the Calvary just over a century ago. It’s not really a military problem that we have fewer tanks and don’t care much about them.

Kareah · 20/01/2023 22:25

Greenshake · 20/01/2023 22:24

Why? I say “the U.K.” and “the US” all the time.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 20/01/2023 22:26

As Ireland is meant to be a neutral country am not happy with all the help we have been given them to be honest as innocent men on both sides sent to their slaughter and for what. Our country has an open door policy and there are no beds available for anymore people, as so many Irish homeless and it is ridiculous now. Just wish these stupid leaders would cop on and stop this war as all for nothing. Do not want to be sending weapons but I know UK has different policy but must be difficult to see your government sending millions of pounds worth of stuff when everyone struggling with the cost of living.

Absolutely but it concerns me that it could cause a major escalation

It’s the Soviet styling which was dumped a long time ago.

Tanks.
