Morning all!

Leeks are featuring in my shopping today! Pancakes with leeks, mushrooms and cheese are on the menu at the House of Lobelia. LOVE the idea that they are onions with ideas. Grin I'll tell DH that it will tickle him (big leek lover).

Mind you if those leeks are a ridiculous price we might have to think again.

I feel similar to you @FatSealSmugSoup about the house. I keep seeing what needs to be done, then I get discouraged.

I have finally got a confirmed date for a patio clean- hurrah! March 11th. A Saturday. The patio cleaning people said they were overwhelmed with spring coming soon so were working weekends as well. That will make a big difference.

Hope everyone has a good day!

WiltingLobelia · 21/02/2023 06:39

Oops- namechange fail. Grin

Back to me.

RunningKatie · 21/02/2023 07:34

Nevermind the cost of leeks, we're limited on how much broccoli and cabbage we can buy. It's all a bit strange in the shops again.
Pancakes tonight, might do them after swimming so no-one is ill in the pool.
I've just put things away in car boots, still looking for a pair of slippers. Last seen on Thursday, and they are huge fluffy animal ones. It's a bit odd.

SpiritOfEdna · 21/02/2023 13:24

ah just had a knock on the door to say our neighbour died peacefully overnight; she was in hospital and very poorly so not unexpected. She was the living historian of our street, almost as old as it (in her 90s) and lived there as a young married woman and brought her family up there. Every day at 10am sharp she would trot by the house, get the No 61 bus and go some shopping, then the bookies and return back at 11:30am on the dot. She was in her element on the doorstep during lockdown, waving to everyone when we were clapping the NHS.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 21/02/2023 18:31

Evening everyone.

I am so sorry for the loss of your neighbour @SpiritOfEdna . Your neighbour sounds lovely. Thanks

SnowAndIceLobelia · 21/02/2023 18:34

Also- just to alert you to this brand new change on MN.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4747622-update-from-mnhq-name-changes

Basically whatever name you originally post under on a thread will auto default if you post again on that thread. Which is why I am now back to SnowAndiceLobelia. I can't change back to Wilting or anything else.

No more seasonal namechanges for us on these threads it seems! I am qutir sad about that as i was enjoying the namechanges and reasons behind them.

Hope everyone is well.

@AllTheExtraClouds sorry for not getting back to you after your kind comments regarding my dad. Yes, I’ve heard of Wendy Mitchell. What an amazing and inspiring woman. I’ve downloaded her most recent book!
If anyone needs any leeks I’ve got loads in my veg garden! Was just watching an item on the news about fruit and vegetable shortages. How will we all make our smug soup?!
Today has been really productive. The bottom of the dresser is now totally clear of all my teaching resources. The recycling bin is quite full and my lovely friend who works at a charity shop has taken four boxes of books and other donations. All have now left the house!
Hope everyone is ok and those who are struggling a bit at the moment are bearing up.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/02/2023 05:04

@Alltheclouds Still here. Just dealing with a lot. 😔

I'm sorry, I missed this. Hope you're ok Flowers

AllTheExtraClouds · 22/02/2023 06:51

Morning all
@SpiritOfEdna sorry about your neighbour. She does sound wonderful. It's quite rare for someone to stay put for a whole lifetime now, I think. RIP lovely neighbour.

@FatSealSmugSoup I do wonder if I took up pulling peat up hills, whether I'd get myself a Kardashian bum. Been pondering on joining the gym but I worry that it's too late and my efforts to acquire a beautiful booty would end up just knackering my knees. Which are currently quite sound. I hope you are feeling well to day and not too overwhelmed with stuff round the house.

@Aria999 that's an astonishing price for leeks 🤯 In our south coast town they were £2.50 for three yesterday, which is still more expensive than it once was. Forgot to see if there were tomatoes.

@WiltingLobelia/@SnowAndIceLobelia /@ComeTheSpringLobelia it looks like you can change name on the little box above your post, but it'llchange automatically if you don't. My current name is the result of a flounce and a rejoin, so that's all I have 😂 Hopr you're feeling less blah! And congratulations on the patio!

Did the fluffy slippers turn up @RunningKatie ? I forgot about pancakes yesterday. Hope the kids enjoyed them - and you of course!

Hello! That book is great and has made a real difference to how I perceive and treat the people I know who have dementia. It's in my family too and it's taken away some of the fear I have around myself/any of my loved ones developing the disease. My mum refuses to talk about it (out of fear I'm sure) but the rest of us have chatted about how we'd deal with it, hope to be treated, etc. Wendy has done so much as an ambassador for the cause. Amazing woman!

What a productive day you have had! It's must feel very freeing!

Hope everyone has a fab day 💕

WiltingLobelia · 22/02/2023 07:22

testing..

WiltingLobelia · 22/02/2023 07:22

AHA!!!!

SnowAndIceLobelia · 22/02/2023 07:26

Thanks @AllTheExtraClouds :)

I clearly did not read the small print.Wink

I will seek out Wendy Mitchell. She sounds very inspiring.

Hope everyone has a lovely day. Thanks

SpiritOfEdna · 22/02/2023 11:34

thank you everyone.

I have a relatively meeting free day today. The guy who did the paving came and looked at the alley way between us and next door to give us a quote to do that - the flagging is broken/missing in places; but it will be less fancy flagging!

My sibling is off work and seems to be emptying all the cupboards and chucking stuff out, I just have to admire the handiwork :-) and look at piles of stuff I may want to keep or chuck.

The house is gradually looking less tired and shabby; lol I wish I could work my magic on myself :-)

Have a good day everyone

SoE

RunningKatie · 22/02/2023 20:34

@AllTheExtraClouds - the slippers have been located this evening. They were sat on the top of a piano keyboard, ds is wearing them again now. Yay!

So sorry to hear about your neighbour @SpiritOfEdna

Tonight I've mended my coat, i need to label some school trousers but my eyesight says no to sewing black in artificial light.

AllTheExtraClouds · 23/02/2023 06:40

chose that moniker for you as I had the choice of three Lobelias)

Hurray for finding the slippers @RunningKatie It's amazing where things get to!

I have temporarily taken up flylady-ing again because my house is a mess and I never really got my act together after my Christmastime slide down the plug hole. We keep on top of basics, like loo and bath are clean, laundry and cooking get done, and the washing up, but there's just piles off stuff everywhere that's just not getting sorted. I think there's a lot of truth in the notion that a person's living space mirrors what's going on in their head, or perhaps it's the other way round. Either way, I'm hoping that by clearing the clutter in the house, I'll clear the clutter in my brain, and then it will be a virtual circle of zen.

And then I may actually have the brainspace to do something about my patio too, and my vegetable patch which has been untouched for several years!

DressingForRevenge · 23/02/2023 06:50

@SpiritOfEdna im sorry to hear about your neighbour. We have quite a lot of people here who’ve never moved house - despite times moving on and suggestions they’d be happier elsewhere. Just a few days ago I learned of a brother and two sisters who lived in a house accessible only by boat - and I just thought “how lovely”. No electricity, just paraffin lamps and open fires.

@Mumtobabyhavoc i hope you get over the hump of life soon and are back with us.

@Alltheclouds I was definitely born a couple of decades too early. I spent my teens and twenties trying to cover up my voluptuous behind - and then KK came along and stuck a thong in it and girls actually go around sticking them out and photoshopping them to make them look bigger. 🤷‍♀️ Once big noses and wrinkles become en vogue I’ll be the most beautiful woman in ALL the world!

I’ve been making mental plans for the veg patch. I don’t think I can afford the big polytunnel this year so I’m going to try and make raised beds and order in some top soil.

The state of the house is a reflection of the mind? Oh dear. 😂

Yesterday two of us had to go into town for medical appointments which is never much fun. But I arrived home to find my youngest had got stuck into his homework. Perhaps he’s feverish.

Today I need to catch up on some admin and put undercoat on a couple of bits so I can gloss them tomorrow.

AllTheExtraClouds · 23/02/2023 07:31

I've been watching 'Vera' @FatSealSmugSoup and some of the very remote/rural properties in Northumberland look very lovely, but it turns out I'm much more comfortable where there's people and a supermarket. Boat/paraffin/sibling combination sounds very lonesome to me!

I lost the first paragraph of my previous post, Lobelia - but it was about my surprise at reading the small print. I'd referred to you as @ComeTheSpringLobelia as it sounded nicest ☺

Have a lovely day everyone 😘

AllTheExtraClouds · 23/02/2023 07:34

@FatSealSmugSoup not sure what needs to come back for me to be considered beautiful 🤔 I'd love a nice round bum though. Doesn't need to be huge, but I'd like to fill out my trousers, and not just at the waistband! I have a big nose and wrinkles too. Rude not to at my age.

RunningKatie · 23/02/2023 09:38

If the state of my house reflects my mind it explains a lot! Although my choice of coffee (strong, black and by the bucket) has apparently been scientifically proven to be the drink of psychopaths.
I've casually re-read a message from school and realised world book day is next Thursday. I now I have post-it stuck up to remind me to sort that.
Otherwise, today is white washing day. I've already hoovered mud up, the new stair carpet is proving to be lovely but shows every spec of dust, of which there are many.
Hope everyone has a good Thursday!

petalpower · 23/02/2023 17:01

I don’t miss World Book Day @RunningKatie either as a teacher or parent! (However, I do still have several adult sized costumes that I wore as a teacher and haven’t got rid of in case of fancy dress parties!!)
Today I had a lovely morning and lunch with a very good friend. The world has now been put to rights! Then home and I’ve thrown out a load of gift bags that I won’t use again as they’re not to my taste (fussy bugger), moved some empty folders to the garage, tidied the cupboard that the jigsaws lived in which are now relocated to the dresser and done an online grocery shop.

Aria999 · 24/02/2023 01:31

Hi everyone!

@SpiritOfEdna that's sad about your neighbor. There's some people in our street who have lived here a long time but I don't know anybody that well because of covid (and because I have a very British reticence about talking to people don't know).

@AllTheExtraClouds food is more expensive here but maybe the checkout lady messed up and charged me for 3 bunches or something. I will check.

Maybe yoga and weights if you want to tone and go easy on the knees?

I made a batch of meat sauce that will last me a few meals, I find myself resenting the need to have lunch, there's no time!

I feel that if I had about two weeks where I could just stop time, tidy and clean the house, then it might be tidy and clean. As it is, it gets dirty and messy faster than I get round to doing anything about it. Only one basket of unfolded clean laundry at the moment though!

As it is, I also have building piles everywhere (I am less tidy than DH so this happens when he is away).

It's been a 3 day work week as school is closed Monday and Friday and there has been a lot to fit in. I should probably tidy and clean in the evening but I can't face it.

@RunningKatie mmm black coffee. I used to drink too much but am now ticking over at a steady 2 cups a day. Tea fills in the gaps. I am very thankful that world book day doesn't seem to have made it to America (despite the name).

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 24/02/2023 07:00

Oh world book day. [groan]

Mine always get sent in as Harry Potter. Along with 99% of the class. i have thanked next day delivery services many a time (while gnashing my teeth about how everything 'fun' the school does costs money money money' ) Although one year one of DCs friends tried to come in with his shetland as War Horse which I thought was inspired.

[drumroll] DH is repainting the family bathroom. I like these daily project achievements that I get to just observe and make approving noises over!

I like ComeTheSpringLobelia also @AllTheExtraClouds Grin I am starting to feel like spring really IS coming!

Hope everyone is well. Thanks

AllTheExtraClouds · 24/02/2023 07:04

Morning!
@RunningKatie my brother must be a psychopath too! He drinks gallons of the stuff 😂

I googled world book day and discovered it started to be celebrated in schools on 1998. I don't remember my children dressing up but a vague recollection of them taking their favourite books in. Possibly. Is it just primary schools? We had 'mufti' days occasionally but not fancy dress I don't think. It sounds stressful!

@petalpower your morning sounds lovely. So nice to catch up with a friend and put the world to rights!

I do keep contemplating yoga, @Aria999 but I doubt I'd commit to a class. But it would be a good idea. I started a dvd course some years back but it went too fast for me. Probably not healthy anyway as it seems correct posture is very important. I'm pretty fit as I walk, can run a bit, swim, play tennis and push wheelbarrows across muddy fields ( the horsey amongst us will know about this!) but none of these things have created a beautiful booty. But thinking about it, some 1:1 yoga or pilates might be a really good thing as I'm more strong than stretchy. Good call - thank you!

I'm very proud of myself as I made a good start on my chaos yesterday. Some books out of the house, to a village phone box library, some bits that don't belong to me were returned, and bookshelves dusted and arranged neatly. And dinner was prepared in advance and just put in oven/on hob when DH finished work as he beat me home yesterday.

Hoping I'm as productive today.

Have a great day everyone 💐

AllTheExtraClouds · 24/02/2023 07:21

Cross posted @ComeTheSpringLobelia It's springy but very cold today. Lots of snowdrops and some brave daffodils about, looking lovely 😊 I like clucking approvingly over someone else doing the painting too!
