There’s nothing on Earth quite like the thrill of new pyjamas - oh how expectations have changed! I salute you and your new jammies @SpiritOfEdna !

@Peridot1 you might’ve bumped into my dad at Heathrow yesterday - he’s away blowing through my inheritance. 😁 I’m delighted for him, having been locked up for years (wales) - he’s finally freeeee and flexing his passport. I didn’t remind him to check if he’d packed it, missed a trick there!

kitchen floor cleaning at THIS time of the morning? Are you drunk? I’ve got a steam mop - it makes it look like a REAL cleaner has been in. 😉

I’ve got to get ready soon for a hospital appointment- I’m knackered already and it’s 2 hrs each way. Then tonight I’m helping out at yoof club which usually involves me getting thrashed in a board game by competitive 10 year olds.

Have a lovely day everyone.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 15/02/2023 08:23

Oooh a steam mop! We have one of those (It;s a gadget so DH guards it jealously). I might point him in the general direction of the kitchen floor.

Hope your hospital visit goes well and smoothly @FatSealSmugSoup

I have a fairly busy day coming up. I need to finish some forms that I have been procrastinating on; clean the house so that it is ready for our cleaner to come tomorrow; make a lasagne for lunch with 7 tomorrow; prepare the dining room for tomorrow (washing and drying tableclothes and clearing school-related clutter); move some armchairs to a room upstairs as there will be nowhere to sit otherwise; and in the middle of all that I am going out for a girly lunch that was ostensibly meant to be for my own birthday (which was a few months ago anyway but first time we can catch up) and so I can't skip it!

So I had better motivate myself and get on with it!!

Hope everyone has a great day!

SpiritOfEdna · 16/02/2023 12:23

Pyjamas arrived :-)

It's a cold drizzly day here so not much hope of getting out and finishing tidying up post the great paint spill disaster.

Today:

  • Busy work day - but an easier afternoon after a hectic morning.
  • find a dog groomer who can take care of Coco's matty legs
  • dry bedding - I forgot to do so yesterday, so ended up sleeping on quite the mismatch :-)
  • find a rogue sock before the dog does (and then eats it and vomits it out, lovely)

Happy days, good luck with the hospital appointment @FatSealSmugSoup

SoE

FatSealSmugSoup · 17/02/2023 06:36

I hope the pyjamas were everything you needed them to be - and MORE! 😁

Hospital was grim - I cried when the words “degenerative brain condition” were used - I mean I knew of course - but the phrase hit me like a ton of bricks. They had to take bloods to send to Denmark (because the ludicrous Scottish government won’t send them to an English lab 🙄) - my veins went dry and I have to go back next week to try and find more. Once and for all ending my career as an IV drug user. 😉

I keep buying paint. And brushes. I have a problem.

a new rug arrived for DS2 bedroom, but there is nowhere to lay it. I provide storage, bin bags etc., but I do not “pick up shite”. If he wants a rug, rather than a “lid”, he needs to sort it.

spoke to my manager yesterday and he’s trying to arrange a 10/hr week for me (over 2 days) which would be ideal for me. Keep me ticking over without exhausting me.

I’ve taken next week off work for no other reason than these walls won’t paint themselves - and I want to.

I hope everyone is OK and that @Peridot1 is safely down under!

AllTheExtraClouds · 17/02/2023 07:27

Hello everyone!
Have we lost @petalpower ? And @Mumtobabyhavoc is quiet too. Hope nobody has gone off the rails like I did. Come baaaack 💕
Big hugs to @FatSealSmugSoup Tough times and those words would strike chills into anyone's heart. You have such a great sense of humour and by the sounds of it, decent boss and good friends, who I hope you are leaning on for support. Coffee and cake for you ☕ Cake Will leave you and the docs to decide on the good meds.
Am sharing the new pyjama delight @SpiritOfEdna! I hope you got to the sock (and I bet your dog is a labrador!)
I too hope @Peridot1 is safely down under and that @ComeTheSpringLobelia got her house clean enough for the cleaner, and that the 'birthday' lunch was a good giggle 😊
How has half term been @RunningKatie and @Aria999?
I'm doing half term things today with a friend and her little one, so we're hoping that the drizzle has gone and the forecast wind isn't too strong, as we'll mostly be outside.
Other than that, I have some books and clothing to rehome, and looking at my kitchen windowsill, something needs to be done about that as well.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 17/02/2023 08:14

❤to you @FatSealSmugSoup I wish we could all give you a big RL hug. ❤

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 17/02/2023 08:22

Thanks @AllTheExtraClouds my cleaner cancelled (approximately 30 minutes after I got the house cleaner-ready!) and the lunch went very well. I was cursing myself though for choosing lasagne as it took up more time than I anticipated.

Today I am taking the DCs bowling. Then this weekend I need to declutter big time.

I received a complement about my dark corner in the garden that I recently overhauled though by one of my friends who is an extremely good gardener, so that was very pleasing!!

Hope everyone is well and your day today @FatSealSmugSoup goes smoothly.

SpiritOfEdna · 17/02/2023 09:27

Flowers @FatSealSmugSoup

Still no sign of the sock - if the dog got it it must have been in a flash and she has a corner where she hides her stuff - not there! She's a cross lagotto x cocker spaniel but she does love a sock. Poor dog got 'rejected' from the groomers the other night - one of her legs has got quite knotted so they would not bath her so will try to sort that out this weekend. She loves being in and out of water and muddy pools which is probably causing them - might get her to the beach this weekend.

For today:

  • 2 x More interviews - there's always a bit of panic beforehand of how presentable I look am in gym kit this morning so must remember to put a clean top on :-)
  • see if I can find a cheap art kit to try marbling
  • sibling is off work today so we will ty and fix up the yard.

Have a good day

SoE

petalpower · 17/02/2023 09:57

I’m still here @AllTheExtraClouds ! Been reading but got into the habit of not posting.
Big hugs and a large gin prescribed for @FatSealSmugSoup . That’s hard news to hear. I hope you’re doing ok.
I’ll just wave to everyone else as if I scroll back through I lose my post.
We’re away for a few days visiting family - both sets of parents and my aunt all in their 80s. Dad has early stages of dementia and is being a bit a bit tricky at times. Starting to get a bit paranoid as well as the forgetfulness and repetition. Our daughter visited yesterday from uni for the day and caught up with both sets of grandparents which was lovely. We won’t see her now until the end of term.
Jobs at home wise I’ve been cracking on with clearing the teaching resources and have an increasingly large pile to go to the charity shop too. During this trip I’ve been returning various books, jigsaws etc that have been lent and brought MIL birthday present to save posting it. Also had a bit of a result with the clock mender making an unexpected appearance at the beginning of the week. She’s taken the workings of our grandfather clock away to be serviced and managed to get another family wall clock working too.
Hope everyone has a good day.

Aria999 · 17/02/2023 16:05

That's grim @FatSealSmugSoup . Very scary. I'm sorry.

RunningKatie · 17/02/2023 17:08

I'm so sorry @FatSealSmugSoup - taking next week off for painting sounds good.
Half term has been good but I'm shattered, also realised we need to replace a pair of shoes by Monday so that's excellent.
I need to hang a pair of curtains this weekend. And drink wine or gin.....

WiltingLobelia · 17/02/2023 17:36

(namechange)

I need to buy and hang some curtains also. In DS1s room.

But the decluttering is rapidly becoming urgent. I just feel discouraged before I even begin. I am aiming to fill one large bin bag this weekend with rubbish that can go before charity shopping the rest. Although last week I charity shopped a china plattter and saw it in their window for £18 today. It immediately made me think 'huh?!' . So I might need to sort through things I can actually (hopefully) sell on as I could really do with some extra funds as the living crisis begins to bite!!!!

Hope everyone has a lovely evening. Thanks

AllTheExtraClouds · 19/02/2023 07:10

Hello all 👋
Good to see you here @petalpower My parents had a lovely old grandfather clock - must ask mum what they did with it. They downsized to a place where it would have looked totally ridiculous, so I guess it was sold. It was very beautiful. Mum still has an antique piano which is never played but still gets tuned every year 💕 Sorry to hear your dad is getting dementia. It can manifest itself in sad and surprising ways 😢 Have you heard of Wendy Mitchell? She has dementia (young onset) and has written a couple of lovely books about it. And a blog whichmeamitoday.wordpress.com/blog/ She is really quite an amazing character!

AllTheExtraClouds · 19/02/2023 07:27

Bit concerned about your name change @WiltingLobelia I hope it's a reference to all your extra exercise and not due to feeling discouraged ((hug))
I may join the new curtain brigade as we have some in dining room/office that are really showing some wear! I think if i wash them they might fall apart.

@RunningKatie well done for surviving half term! I used to really look forward to school holidays but by the end would really look forward to term starting! Now I'm an old bag who prefers term time because I go out and about with someone I support, and term time is generally more peaceful. Hope you get the shoes in time!

I'm trying to get new jeans, but I'm not an easy shape to fit. Slender, short legs and flat bum. Not very appealing when combined with my increasing waist measurement. My post menopause weight gain is strictly waist up. Marvellous!

@SpiritOfEdna are you interviewing for new job? If so, good luck and I hope you remembered to change your top 😂

Hmmm 🤔 Job for today: I have what flylady calls hotspots, where my clutter (books, bags/general clobber) has taken over. So I am going to get off my flat behind and put it away.

Today is the day I give up swearing too 😇

Have a happy and productive day, folks!

WiltingLobelia · 19/02/2023 07:35

Hi all- just having the winter blaaahs @AllTheExtraClouds Smile

Bit discouraged too about the house but I will gird my loins and crack on with it.

Curtain buying day today . Cinema trip later and Dunelm is in the same shopping complex so that hopefully will work!

Hope everyone has a good day. Thanks

FatSealSmugSoup · 19/02/2023 10:44

Hugs much appreciated - I’ve put the coffee on, pulled myself together and stopped being a whiny baby. For now. I’ve been trying to fill in the forms for the DVLA and I’m going to have to phone the nurse - such misleading questions re symptoms - and the difference between HAD and HAS.

Yesterday I took the pets to the vet for check-ups. Took the long and scenic route home down roads and not done in years and it was gorgeous.

Woke up at 4 and whilst making coffee saw loads of people out and about… then the coastguard - which twice landed in a neighbours garden. I just hope everyone is ok. But I love the way everyone comes together, gets out of bed and gets up on the hills to help. That’s community.

Now if only my measuring skills were as fucking awesome as my flat pack assembly ability. It took me half the time to build the damn thing… which doesn’t fit into the alcove intended because um… skirting boards. 😳

I’ve put up 2 new lampshades and a new pull on the bathroom extractor - and that’s my “ladder” work done for today.

@WiltingLobelia i hope spring finds you soon. I saw on another thread Otto destroyed your garden last year - that’s why we can’t have nice things here. My chickens will not have a roof because the sea doesn’t require another sheet of plastic. I’m found someone’s garage door on the beach once.

@AllTheExtraClouds skinny legs and flat bum you say? Gosh… I can’t even begin to imagine! 😉 My legs have been selected through millennia of genetics to pull carts of peat up hills.

I hope everyone is doing ok and that brighter times are coming.

DS2 still hasn’t cleared room for his rug…

Aria999 · 19/02/2023 12:24

That happened to me @FatSealSmugSoup though it was my own fault as I didn't think it was going to be that tight and just eyeballed it instead of measuring.

The skirting in my cupboard is only about an inch high and half an inch wide. But it was enough. Refusing to be defeated, I pried it off on one side with a screwdriver. Chest of drawers now fits.

Aria999 · 19/02/2023 12:40

Sorry you are having winter blues @WiltingLobelia

I can relate to the overwhelmed feeling. Every time I have a free moment I sort of mentally flit from one overdue task to the next trying to figure out what is most important to do first and end up just wasting half the time checking my phone instead

Yesterday I made an enormous batch of leek and potato soup. It still only tastes ok, I think I need a better recipe.

3 leeks costs me $15!! That's as much as a reasonable cut of steak for 2 people! What happened to vegetables being cheap?!

The painters are doing a great job but one of them now has covid. DS7 has something this morning so we should probably test. Also has conjunctivitis in both eyes. Out here that's a cause to be kept off school so that's going to be next week's fun.

RunningKatie · 19/02/2023 12:49

We have a sideboard that doesn't fit where it was intended for. DH said it would. Oh how we laughed, as did the delivery men!

Curtains hung and new landing light fitted. Very productive weekend.

It's very sunny here so off to exercise ddog and dd.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/02/2023 05:04

@Alltheclouds Still here. Just dealing with a lot. 😔

SpiritOfEdna · 20/02/2023 09:51

@Alltheclouds I am interviewing for 2 new roles for my team. The two on Friday were car crashes in different ways - from hyper energy in one to so-slow-almost-comatose in the other. 1 more today, then we will offer to two we interviewed early last week and pray they accept. Unless today's turns out to be totally everything we need. Today is an American holiday, so I have an easier day of it late afternoon as my American colleagues are out of office.

Spent yesterday scrubbing paint off flags and generally cleaning the yard, out to the tip and back. Only more more big bit of wood to dismantle and then somehow get the old coffee table into bits.

Today's task

  • am looking at an untidy desk again - how does that happen in the blink of an eye?
  • glue back together a broken fridge magnet from Cuba. I think I'm Kirsten from The Repair Shop! I am missing one chip :-)
  • I've been trying to put up a long shelf, but need to drill into masonry and the drill is not budging, it's just making the existing hole bigger - so have to research where I going wrong.

right, off to interview number 6 and hopefully last.

SoE

Aria999 · 20/02/2023 15:14

@SpiritOfEdna do you have a hammer drill?

SpiritOfEdna · 20/02/2023 16:12

@Aria999 I do, just had a quick look at a You Tube video so can have a practise on an exterior wall in a bit.

FatSealSmugSoup · 21/02/2023 06:11

@SpiritOfEdna giving an appalling interview is actually my secret superpower. Highlights include being an hour late, crying and stealing. 😳 I honestly don’t know what comes over me. I should probably take lessons from Trainspotting’s Spud!

I’m feeling like I’m never going to get on top of anything. The entire house needs re-decorating and I can’t work out where to start and my scattered approach is just confusing me. We have so much stuff I don’t know how to tackle a room without paint a bit, shuffle shuffle shuffle, paint a bit more.

@RunningKatie i did consider attacking the skirting boards with a chisel! 😂

@Aria999 ive noticed leeks have become “luxury produce” over the last few years. Leeks fgs. They’re only onions with ideas above their station.

AllTheExtraClouds · 21/02/2023 06:27

Hello everyone! Hope you're all doing well. Impressed as ever with achievements, ways with words and the general loveliness on the thread.
Off to work now but fully intend to make smug soup later. I may nip into supermarket at some point today to see what the salad and veg aisles look like. We have a big bag of onions and I do need to do something with those. I will check out the cost of leeks.

I hope you all have a happy day 💕
