Happy anniversary @petalpower

Lovely out today. Feels quite autumnal in the early mornings and the current cool sunshine is delightful!
We have people arriving later but we're eating out thankfully! So not much to do.
I'm about to go out for a walk so I can't make any mess!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2023 00:41

Feels like fall here, too! Cloudy and a bit cooler, but still humid, from morning rain.
Boxed up items in a bedroom and packed boxes into closet; vacuumed and cleaned baseboards. Found more to throw away and send to recycling. Took garbage out and cleaned garbage bin. Have got almost 20 hard cover books to get rid of. Nothing special, so will likely drop of at Sally Ann.

Happy belated birthday, Petal. Hope you had something delish for your dinner. 😋
Thunder, already thinking about Christmas???? 😱
Katie, what a nice way to start the day. ☀️

Planning on salmon and risotto for dinner.

ThunderclapCloud · 10/08/2023 11:03

You're on a roll @Mumtobabyhavoc !

Weather still perfect here and I took a peaceful early morning stroll in the woods first thing. I love my guests but I also crave silence 😊

Christmas...well there's a story behind my early preps. I have a full blown loathing of the who fecking season I get a little stressed about it courtesy of some childhood issues and so I drive myself a little bit mad having to have everything done that can be done while it is still summer, so I can pretend it's not happening until the day before Christmas eve. And at that point I delegate because nobody will let me ignore it completely.

Today I have put a wash on, cleaned the bathroom and wiped down the banisters.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2023 19:03

Trying hard, Thunder. Plan today is to pack up Havoc's closet. Living room is partly packed and will try to pack up rest today, too.
I'm all for making holidays, esp Christmas, easier. I figured out a long time ago that rushing and stressing makes the actual holiday anti-climatic and no fun at all.
I put lights and tree up early - about a month before. Tree goes on the deck covered in lights with a star on top. No mess and simply viewing it through the glass door is lovely.
Breakfast is always a version of bread pudding and fruit that I prep the used before and put in oven when I get up. We used to have a dozen dishes for dinner, tradition, but I stopped and only do a few now. Main last year was chicken (I think...) and lamb chops. If I do turkey I get the butcher to slice it in half length-wise, and freeze half for Easter. Just a few gifts and shop early. Works here. I'm with you on keeping it simple.

Just waiting for laundry to finish. Time to get moving on the packing up...

Aria999 · 10/08/2023 19:08

Happy birthday @petalpower !

It is my birthday today.

Aargh Christmas. I need to begin the usual round of trying to pin down people on their plans months before they want to think about it, so we can plan travel. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Wish we could just stay home again.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2023 20:20

Aria, Happy Birthday!!!! 29 already??? 🙀😺
Hope you are doing something special. 💐

Havoc's room is now a war-zone. No turning back. Have now changed plans: on my way to hardware store to buy new shelf and brackets for the closet. Will now paint closet since I've got the paint and need to fix a shelf and put up another. Boxes are inadequate so will need to repack and stack once new shelf is up. Ugh. Thus is why we procrastinate... in for a penny and now in for a pound. Wish me luck. 🤞
Oh, also packed up electronics and styrofoam into car to drop at recycling centre on my way.

Aria999 · 10/08/2023 20:40

Good luck @Mumtobabyhavoc !

DS7 room is also a war zone but for different reasons. I think he may have taken some kind of religious vow of non tidying.

Went out for breakfast, watched a movie and are now playing a board game. DS7 is with us and we all have jet lag but it is a nice day so far.

RunningKatie · 10/08/2023 20:51

Happy birthday @Aria999 !

What a glorious day today has been, almost like summer has dropped in for a quick visit.

Peridot1 · 11/08/2023 07:40

Hello all.

Belated birthday and anniversary wishes @petalpower and @Aria999.

I am shattered! Four extra people in the house is hard work. And the six year old never stops talking! We went up to London on Tuesday and got rained on most of the day. Last two days were lovely though. They leave today and I can get house back to normal and relax. The dishwasher needs a break! It seems to be on constantly. And we won’t mention the amount of empty wine and beer bottles……. I think I need a new liver.

I am not even thinking of Christmas yet. I don’t feel we have had a summer so not thinking of winter yet. I used to start buying presents pretty early just when I saw things but I don’t really have a lot to buy for now so it’s easier. We are creatures of habit food wise so always do the same pretty much.

Have a good day all.

LateSummerLobelia · 11/08/2023 08:01

Hello everyone!

Slight namechange as it feels like Late Summer (or the late lamented summer anyway).

Happy birthday @Aria999 ! Hope the packing goes well @Mumtobabyhavoc

I hope you have a good post-visitors rest @Peridot1 !!

I think I will start buying gifts now also for Christmas. We tend to have a very quiet one as DS1 finds it very hard to cope with. Just us. Although he has started saying he hates Christmas because it is all so stressful. Not sure how.... it's just us, we have films and eat the entire meal over 3 days (starter on Christmas eve; main on Christmas day and pudding on Boxing day) because he finds food and eating a bit overwhelming. (Not like me AT ALL!). So I need to give some thought to what we will do this year to make it easier for him. It would be carnage if we tried to visit or had visitors and DH doesn't like that much either so that makes things simple for us. Gifts wise I find that stressful as we have nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and godchildren and I need to start putting funds aside so it is not all a huge financial shock come December!!

My washing and ironing is finally up to date. I have also topped up a garden bed in our dark corner with wood chips. The plants i planted as a Daily Project earlier this year have taken off beautifully. The feeding and recent rain has done wonders and the whole area looks like a mini rainforest. I am quite delighted with it!

Hope everyone has a good day. It's grey and drizzly in my corner of the world.

Peridot1 · 11/08/2023 08:56

Garden bed sounds lovely @LateSummerLobelia. Any chance of a photo?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/08/2023 09:30

Lobelia, good name change. 😀
Lots going on with everyone!
Entertaining is surprisingly tiring!

Had a late dinner and an over-tired Havoc didn't fall asleep until 10pm.
At 10:30pm I decided to finish packing Havoc's room. At 11:30pm I moved onto the closet and gave it a good wipe then did first coat of paint. Removed shelves and managed two coats paint. Just need to touch up ends and edges tomorrow and will finish closet. Spent the last half hour cleaning up and setting up for tomorrow and now off to bed. 1:30am. Not bad. Night everyone. 😃🥱

SpiritOfEdna · 11/08/2023 11:58

Happy birthday @Aria999 x
Soooooo glad it's Friday and a (mostly) meeting free day so I can get all my admin out of the way. Hoping the plasterers turn up today so we can get that out of the way and then have a massive clean up. We have a visitor end of August so we need to be welcoming and not looking like a building site.
Today:

  • make a list for tomorrow's epic tidy up - regardless of the dust etc bathroom, living room and bedrooms can be tidied up. That will leave the dining room and hall to be blitzed
  • walk doggo
  • prep for next sewing project
Still no plasterers and it's midday.... they knocked £50.00 of yesterday due to delays by a day - let's see what the rest of the day brings. Have a good day all, SoE
ThunderclapCloud · 11/08/2023 14:16

Belated birthday wishes @Aria999 🎂 🎈 🥂

Peridot1 · 12/08/2023 09:43

Morning all from a very peaceful house!

Not planning on doing too much after the busyness of the last week or so. I’ve washed one lot of towels from visitors and have my bedding in the machine now. Dishwasher is done. I want to clear out fridge and give kitchen surfaces a good clean. And vacuum. I think that will be enough for the day.

Have a good Saturday all.

petalpower · 13/08/2023 09:25

Morning all - hope you’re all having a lovely weekend.
Yesterday I impressed myself with just getting things done. Just little annoying jobs. Re-potting a couple of plants, refilling the pepper grinder etc. DH has moved on from fixing the roof to filling and repainting windows now and seems to have a lot of tools etc hanging around for his various jobs so I rounded up everything that had been left in the utility room and put it in the garage. Visited care home auntie in the afternoon too.
Adult DS is back home today for a couple of days. He’s been having a particularly rotten time (too potentially outing to go into) in terms of work and health and needs a bit of TLC.
We have volunteered to open our garden this week one evening for the village garden group we belong to so I need to do a bit of tidying and weeding in preparation. The ironing/clean washing pile is threatening to take over the utility room so I need to do something about that too.

RunningKatie · 13/08/2023 11:45

We are back from our holiday! The weather was suitably British, I've done 2 loads of washing since we've been back and dh is attacking the garden. Ddog went on holiday to the ILs, he's just about settled back onto his sofa now but still checking where we all are.
I have dug out my ambitious to do list, crossed off buy a fireplace, replaced it with buy a car. Darn it, cosy working fire now pushed back to 2024/25 as my car is proving unreliable.
Hope everyone is well and enjoying the gaps in the clouds.

Aria999 · 13/08/2023 12:19

Thanks everyone!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/08/2023 15:46

Morning everyone.☀️
I wish I had slept longer; almost finished painting 2nd closet last night and in bed at 11pm, but awake until after midnight. Need to finish 2nd closet today; touch up closet 1 and hopefully get shelves and everything put back in both by end of day. Next will be to re-org hall entry closet and re-paint.
We have a heat warning for most of south coast amd interior. Temps here to around 30c, but possibly up to 40c inland. Would prefer to finish painting before it is too warm.

Peridot, hoping you are having a relaxing day.
Petal, hope son is ok. Busy place your house! Will be nice when your dh is done. Will be ready for winter.
Katie, sorry about car. That's stressful.
Aria, hope b-day was a good one!

ThunderclapCloud · 14/08/2023 06:57

Morning all! @petalpower I impress myself when achieving small jobs like that too! I don't have the concentration levels to spend all day doing one thing. Best wishes for DS.

I've got a bit behind on the thread due to having people here, but looks like you all have your hands full and getting things done as always!

I'm taking my mum out today so my first job is to clean out my car. Might get it washed and waxed too. She can travel in style 😎

I must also set the house straight now we have it back. Has been lovely though 💕

petalpower · 14/08/2023 20:05

I am so pleased with myself today as I’ve finally sorted something out that has been hanging over me for ages. We have been unable to find my dad’s original power of attorney documents and it has been distressing for him for us to ask where they are and him not to be able to find them due to his dementia. After an hour and a half on the phone today in a massive queue and £70 lighter I have managed to sort out a duplicate copy of both documents and have also updated my brother’s address on their system. What a relief.

RunningKatie · 15/08/2023 07:53

That sounds like such a weight off @petalpower

Yesterday we did a library trip, I did a school application (secondary - eeek!) and cleared down a stack of emails. All good life admin!

Today I need to do a food shop and run a cleaning cycle on the washing machine.

Peridot1 · 15/08/2023 08:15

Hello all.

Sounds like a good day @petalpower. Hope your DS is ok too.

@RunningKatie - a cleaning cycle on the washing machine sounds like a win! Love those jobs!

I really need to get back to a daily task to get the house a bit more sorted. It feels ok on the surface but drawers and cupboards are a different matter. Today’s extra task will be DS’s T-shirt drawer. Yes he is 22 and should do it himself but he won’t. And he can’t fit any more in and half of it doesn’t fit. So WE will do today.

Other tasks today :

  • kitchen
  • vacuum
  • strip guest bed and wash bedding
  • a clothes wash
  • put yesterday’s washing away
  • book flights
  • Book car hire
  • Book hotel

Have a good day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 15/08/2023 13:21

@petalpower - good news on getting the paperwork (re)done.
We are almost done with this round of work, 'just' need to get everything back in it's place and cleaned up ready for sibling arrival next weekend
Today

  • move chest of drawers/paintings from in front of bedroom windows
  • take down old blinds and clean windows and paint work ready for new blinds on Thursday
  • photogaph all the rubbish for 'man in a van' so he knows what he is taking away
  • brush/mop bedroom floors/hall/landing/stairs/bathroom - everywhere is dirty with workmen's dusty bootprints all over
  • print off forms to fill in to send off documentation which proves I am who I say I am, need that for Friday. First I need to find some paper....
Luckily, it's a national holiday for all the teams I work with... Have a good day, SoE
RunningKatie · 15/08/2023 20:40

I have not only cleaned the washing machine but the dishwasher as well! Ta da.

DH has gone to do a food shop, I'm finding out how to tax a car, claim back road tax and how much my insurance is going up - even though my new (to me!) car has a smaller engine than my current car. Cars are so expensive.

At some point I'm going to need to start passport application forms but I'm scheduling that in for next week. Going to need a lot of quiet time for that job!
