My problem is I have a kind of random walk approach to the enormous collection of things that need doing.

This morning for example. Task 1: put fresh towels in bathroom.

I bring up the towels and put the old ones in the laundry. I tidy up a few bits in the bathroom and notice the bin needs emptying.

I empty it and take it down to the garage. I notice the recycling truck is late today so I deal with the enormous backlog of boxes in the garage waiting to be recycled.

Then as I am on a roll I sweep and tidy the garage (this badly needs doing) completing half of it before I give up and go get a glass of water.

I remember what I am supposed to be doing. I finish putting the towels in the bathroom. It is now 3 hours later...

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/05/2023 00:17

I just sorted a box of old papers and have a pile to shred! This box has been taunting me for over a year! It contained old bankbooks, credit card and bank slips, student records and lots of other odds and ends. Some items filed, but about half to be shredded!!! 🥳

Peridot1 · 25/05/2023 12:30

@petalpower - actually my sock drawer is ok! I did it when I was actually getting stuff done!

@Aria999 - people probably wouldn’t mind but I really really do. We haven’t lived here that long and this will be the first time we have had most people here. And some of them we have never met. And most other gardens in the village are immaculate. So I really want ours to look ok. But we are getting there. DH has eventually understood how it’s making me feel.

I get your random approach! I do that too. I think most of us do to an extent.

Yesterday we did some more garden sorting. I even planted out some veg plants that we bought weeks ago. And cleared out an area by the wall by the house which needed weeding. That now needs membrane putting down and some gravel and we will put some pots on it.

We have been to Costco this morning and this afternoon it’s more gardening.

I even managed half an hour sitting outside with my book yesterday afternoon which always makes me feel better.

Have a good day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 25/05/2023 15:26

hello

today

  • take parcels to another Inpost drop off point (need to find one that is accepting parcels :-)
  • been waiting for plasterer all morning but he didn't turn up will be here tomorrow
  • contacted a man about replacing a window and 2 patio doors waiting for reply
  • house is a mess, everything is huddled in the middle of rooms to give access to plumber/plasterer/decorator
  • Gym session done this morning, aching now - early night for me

That's all for now - one more meeting then I can walk doggo again when it gets cooler.

Have a good day all

SoE

Today I've shredded some paperwork, thrown out a stack of old scruffy jumpers and put away winter coats. Really feel like I'm making some positive dents although my to-do list remains hysterically ambitious.

SpringLobelia · 25/05/2023 18:54

A tentative foot back into a Daily Project today.

watered all the pot plants in our entrance (garden gate to front door). And planted a couple of ferns that have been sitting around in their temporary pots for at least 2 months.

I am hoping to dedicate myself to 10 minutes of garden work a day.

SpringLobelia · 25/05/2023 18:57

Oh! And I also taught DH how to use e-consult. And cooked mini hotdogs for NewCat who has recently arrived from the RSPCA and who turns her nose up at Dreamies.

petalpower · 26/05/2023 12:49

Now sitting at the hairdressers waiting for my colour to develop. Really annoyingly I brought a shirt back to Primark as I’d bought two for DH (same style different sizes ) and they refused to refund as it was one day over their refund time limit. I don’t come to our local town much and always combine the hairdressers trip with other errands. Picked up a parcel at M and S (birthday presents for husband and dad), spent £40 at Boots on very little (why is everything so expensive?) and am picking up some duck breasts from sainsburys as we’ve got friends for dinner tomorrow. Must also stop at the post office to send an eBay parcel.
I really need to swap my winter and summer clothes over, buy bedding plants for the hanging basket and take the heated under blanket off the bed in a nod to the warmer weather!

SpringLobelia · 27/05/2023 06:30

Morning all!

I very badly need a hair cut and colour @petalpower . And I need to also buy some bedding plants. One of those things might happen today.... [flicks through nursery catalogue....]

Gorgeous morning here. Hope it stays that way!

I am about to take DS1 swimming. He goes to a swimming class each week for children with special needs and it has been brilliant for his confidence as there is no pressure. Then the DCs are agitating that I take then to a local country park. Other than that I need to get some serious potwatering in and wash all the school uniforms as it is half term.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Peridot1 · 27/05/2023 10:19

Morning all. Gosh the weather is making me feel so much more cheerful!

Operation Garden Transformation is continuing here. It’s starting to look a lot better. I’m feeling much better about it. And I am actually helping! And I have asked DH to promise to never let it get so bad again. He has agreed that if he is out of action (which he was a few times over the spring) that we can get someone in to keep on top of it.

This morning DH is tidying up the compost area. I am nipping to Waitrose and will get rid of the bags of recycling etc which has been in the car for about six weeks. That will be a big tick!

This afternoon will be a bit of garden work and a sit down in the sun with my book.

Have a lovely Saturday all.

Aria999 · 27/05/2023 13:00

I also need a haircut and color! I haven't really found a hairdresser I love here yet. I grudgingly accepted a one month wait for someone with good reviews.

That's great news about the garden @Peridot1

SnowAndIceLobelia · 27/05/2023 14:30

Afternoon!

  • swimming - tick
  • watering pots - tick
  • put plant food into pots - tick
  • 2 loads of washing - tick
  • visit to country park and lunch - tick

Now to weed pots on our balcony and to help Dh clear the gutters. Then our local park seems to be having some sort of music and food festival and I shall attend mainly to reassure myself that their Pimms tent is as good as ever.

I have banned myself from social media during the day except for a quick Daily project checkin (tick!) and seem to be a very great deal more productive than normal!

petalpower · 27/05/2023 19:06

Busy sounding days for you all with lots achieved!
Today I’ve visited care home auntie with DS (not a great day for her so it was hard work), arranged a blue badge application form for my step mother as she doesn’t want to do an online application, phoned M and S about sending back an item, repotted two tomato plants and prepped a 3 course dinner as we’ve got friends for dinner tonight. Now sitting with a restorative glass of wine before they arrive. DH is still cutting the grass and will probably still be gardening and not showered when they arrive.

RunningKatie · 27/05/2023 21:47

Gosh, what busy days everyone has had. Today I've posted a letter that's been on my list since covid times. Ta da! Feeling slightly deflated that I don't feel more celebratory.
Also met a friend for lunch and did a bit of summer clothes shopping. We both have an issue with our waistlines expanding and clothes apparently shrinking. Most infuriating.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/05/2023 01:18

Lots of busy bees here! 😄
I used the steamer with a bit of vinegar to clean the kitchen and bathroom floors; the nooks and crannies of the toilet (yuk); some of the discolouration on the caulking around the tub (likely serratia) from water that has been allowed to sit 😤 that bleach hasn't been effective on and then on the window screen, track, sill, curtains and heater in Havoc's room. We're still under the weather here, so that's all I can manage for today besides the usual laundry. Although, I did toss a dishwasher pod into the washing machine last night for a tub clean cycle amd felt smug about it. Hope everyone is having a good sleep. 😴I'm about to start making dinner. 😛

SpringLobelia · 28/05/2023 06:25

Morning!

Hope you all feel better soon @Mumtobabyhavoc

You have achieved loads today!

I forgot to mention yesterday that I also bought two new fish for our fishpond (tick!). DH has had a 'Favourite Fish' for about 10 years. A huge goldfish in a creamy white colour with little orange splodges. He died this week and DH was quite distraught. So yesterday after swimming DS1 and I went and bought him 2 more as a surprise. One is also like a little calico cat with black, white and orange splodges.

Today my main aim is to gain new sitting room curtains by stealth. The ones we have are over 60 years old (in that they came from DH's parent's house and he recalls them as a child). He loves them. I intensely dislike them. They are dark blue with gold swirls and they clash with everything. DH is painting the sitting room and took them down and said he will get them to a specialist curtain cleaner (the only one he trusts) but that is not for a few weeks yet. So I have 'suggested' that we go to Dunelm and get some 'temporary' curtains- quite plain- to put up in the 'meantime' as we clearly 'need' curtains and it is always useful to have 'spares' around anyway. Once they are in situ they will not come down again if I have anything to do with it. There may be little murmurings about the very delicate curtains of old and how now they are cleaned we should maybe pack them away and store them. (Possibly for when they come into fashion again....)

Other than that I hope to report some plants and rearrange them on the patio.

have good days everyone!

petalpower · 28/05/2023 09:51

I like your way of thinking regarding the curtains @SpringLobelia ! Such beautiful and delicate items are surely best packaged away to stop the sunlight damaging them!
I’m having a very lazy lie in and cup of tea in bed. All the washing up from our dinner last night is still sitting around and needs to be washed by hand as we used the posh china and cutlery that don’t go in the dishwasher. It would be lovely if I went downstairs and it was all magically done but I know that’s not going to happen.
I’m hoping to get my winter and summer clothes swapped over today and maybe find a few more items to put on eBay which I’ve been having a bit of success with. Two more items of clothing sold this week.
Have a lovely day everyone!

Peridot1 · 28/05/2023 10:25

Morning all.

I’m liking your curtain plans @SpringLobelia. My DH would probably give in on the curtain issue if he didn’t have to actually go to Dunelm to choose new ones! And you have reminded me I need to measure up a spare room window for some curtains too.

Ive just realised you posted under two names yesterday @SnowAndIceLobelia and @SpringLobelia. Are you trying to confuse us? Grin

I hope the washing up fairy makes an appearance @petalpower. We got rid of our wedding present dinner service that couldn’t go in the dishwasher and replaced it with plain white porcelain from John Lewis. My MIL was horrified. But it’s made life much easier!

Garden jobs continued here yesterday. DH bought me a new toy. A new lawnmower! We now have three. Hmm Ride on, a heavy push one and now a new baby push one. So I cut edges etc where I could with the new baby one. Made a big difference. He is currently doing a section along our driveway that is quite sloped with the heavy push along but then it should be easy to keep on top of it with the lighter one.

I did Waitrose and got rid of some of my recycling stuff. Our Superdrug seems to have stopped taking foil pill packets annoyingly.

Not sure what I will do today. I think I will pick one garden job and do that.

I have just put the dishwasher on with the draining rack in it so am counting that as a job!

Have a lovely summery Sunday all.

petalpower · 28/05/2023 11:15

Well the washing up fairy did come! When I went downstairs DH was at the sink. You could have knocked me down with a feather! Our wedding china does go in the dishwasher but this a really old family set of blue Spode which only comes out when we have guests over. We were given a lovely wooden chest of it (think blanket box size chest) by care home auntie a good few years ago - it was filled with lots of Spode from her parents and extras that she’d bought over the years so is quite special to us.

Peridot1 · 28/05/2023 12:01

Oh that sounds lovely and very special @petalpower. I love Spode.

RunningKatie · 28/05/2023 20:46

I am loving the stealth curtain replacement plans!
Today I've mended a sandal and a pair of trousers and I've glued a badge on dd's Guides uniform as an experiment. Plus I've finished my lego kit I got for my birthday!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/05/2023 22:50

Spring, very clever re the curtains! How did the surprise new fish go over with your DH?
Running, it's so satisfying when little tasks are completed. They seem to nag. I actually like sewing! What kind of Lego set? How long did it take to put together?
Petal, how nice you used the special china. I also have a set from my aunt that my cousin generously gave me. Pre-Havoc I brought it out for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, birthdays, special occasions.

The chat about curtains kept me motivated and I continued on from yesterday's spree by steam cleaning my bedroom curtains, the window/tracks/screen/sill and wall. I then stripped the bed, vacuumed and steam cleaned the mattress then rotated the mattress and ordered a new mattress protector. I've got the window open and am letting everything dry and air out. Vacuumed before Havoc began nap, but managed to do all the other cleaning in 40 minutes. Wiped out now as still coughing a lot, but trying to take advantage of little energy bursts. Going to mask up and pop out for a few groceries later. It's a lovely sunny day here, breezy and not too warm. I'm feeling like having chicken, gravy, mashed potatoes and roasted veg for dinner.

Aria999 · 28/05/2023 23:54

@Mumtobabyhavoc I bought a steam cleaner recently but I think I am doing it wrong.

It has plenty of suction but the dirty water container doesn't seem to fill until i clean it out at the end, and its cleaning is only so-so.

Is there a knack to it? Maybe I am not squirting enough?

I got the bissell green cleaner fwiw

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/05/2023 01:08

@Aria999 You have a different appliance than me. Mine is a Bissell, but steamer only, no suction, with various brush and cloth attachments. So it steams everything to loosen. If using an attachment with a cloth it will pick up the surface debris. Otherwise, I use a cloth separately to wipe as I go.
There should be a Youtube video to view for yours. Let me know- I'm curious!

MoreCloudsThanYouCanImagine · 29/05/2023 07:31

Morning! I've been avidly reading but keep not getting round to posting. @Peridot1 I'm sorry to read of your garden/bbq trauma but as time has gone on it seems that winning the bbq has a silver lining with DH getting his act together.

Enjoying the new curtains by stealth saga @ComeTheSpringLobelia

You've all been such busy and productive bees and it's lovely to read the achievements 💕

My only real achievement this week has been a clean car, inside and out. We're just about keeping on top of the day to day stuff -laundry is done, pots watered, food on table and washing up done etc, but no forward steps. Just marching on the spot, so to speak.

Despite that (well actually the cause!) one thing that child me would be happy about, is that I have taken up getting lost in a novel again. This is something that stopped (in my case) with the advent of forums, and I've had to re develop the focus.

Have a lovely bank holiday everyone!
