So sorry to hear about your little cat @ComeTheSpringLobelia 💔 💐

petalpower · 18/05/2023 09:49

Promise I’ll catch up properly next week and get back on with things. At the moment we’re away visiting both sets of elderly parents. My dad has just lost his driving licence due to his dementia so today I’m driving him to see his brother who is pretty unwell with COPD and have lunch on the way with my auntie who is also losing mobility. Then on to the in-laws (FIL is 89 at the weekend) who are both also quite frail. Today’s other job is to convince my dad to sort out the ownership paperwork for his car so my brother can sell it on his behalf and also find the original LPA paperwork for safekeeping as dad is now helpfully shredding paperwork. Spoke to my sister in law last night en route who said ‘Ooh lovely, a little mini break’ when I said we were visiting the family! Ha ha, I wish …..
Next week I must get to the garden centre for bedding plants for my hanging basket and pots near the back door as we’re hopefully getting towards the end of frost risk. My little tomatoes are ready to be potted on too and I must get the herb seeds in as well.
I do read the thread every day but haven’t posted much recently as I risk sounding like a bit of a moaning Minnie. Best foot forward next week when we return! Have a good day all.

RunningKatie · 18/05/2023 21:14

Today I have recycled a pile of batteries that have been sat on the window sill for ages. Small job but so nice they are gone at last.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/05/2023 00:40

Still not feeling better, but did a very thorough and unplanned vacuuming today pulling out furniture, emptying closets, the whole 9. Found mouse droppings and had pest control in. Traps laid and a plan has been set. Rewarded myself with a beautiful and delicious raspberry cake. 😋

MoreCloudsThanYouCanImagine · 19/05/2023 06:55

@petalpower I want to send you a great big hug! My own mother has become very frail and I only have her care to worry about, and even that has been tough! Thinking of you and very much hoping that you are able to find a little peace when you can 💕

Those little things are important @RunningKatie! I have a box of batteries somewhere to recycle and also a parcel that needs to be sent, and you have reminded me that I must do it today!

What a thing to have to do when you're feeling poorly @Mumtobabyhavoc I hope you feel better soon!

@Aria999 that list is impressive. Well done!

I have a couple of appointments for self/pets to book today, and I plan to do some weeding outside as everything has gone mad out there.

All the best to all of you today 👋

SpiritOfEdna · 19/05/2023 10:58

@petalpower not a moaning minnie at all - you have a lot on your plate.

Back to a mundane list for me today; the house looks like we have just moved in as I have emptied wardrobes which have been dismantled ready for moving into another room, windows have been cleared off ready for new blinds being fitted this afternoon and a decorator coming to give a quote this morning.
Today's list:

  • once blinds are fitted, find new homes for the plants that were on that windowsill
  • find bike lock to put other bike in the alley way: I have the key :-)
  • Find all batteries/cables that need recycling and are stuffed away in drawers :-) (stolen that one)
  • whilst the wardrobes are all emptied out, need to work out how to sell things on Vinted - ie if you can put tags on to say worn once for a wedding :-).

Hope everyone else is well. I miss FatSealSmugSoup, so I hope all is well there.

SoE

petalpower · 20/05/2023 17:46

Thank you @MoreCloudsThanYouCanImagine and @SpiritOfEdna .
Hope everyone is ok on this beautiful sunny Saturday!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/05/2023 21:44

Washed kitchen and bathroom floors; then steam cleaned kitchen floor and a section of carpet in dining area. Bleached and washed a load of Havoc's whites, towels and wash cloths; steam cleaned pillows on beds and after a bit of a netflix break will make beds. 😅

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/05/2023 01:39

I've made the beds then cleaned, bleached and reorganized another section of the kitchen counter! 😁

MoreCloudsThanYouCanImagine · 21/05/2023 07:23

Happy Sunday! @Mumtobabyhavoc you have been on a roll while the rest of us were sleeping!
@SpiritOfEdna hope you find the bike lock to go with the key. All go in your house as usual!

Looking out at a glorious morning with not a cloud in the sky. Birds are singing and it's just lovely. Also freezer whirring and clock ticking. Very homely ☺

Window cleaner came and did the outside, so I might do the insides today. They always look worse when the sun's shining, but so worth it!

SpringLobelia · 21/05/2023 08:15

Morning everyone. Sunny here as well!!

Quiet day Chez Lobelia. Plan to catch up on washing and ironing and the DCs have already suggested a Harry Potter marathon on Netflix. I hope to get them outside to our local forest which is awash with bluebells.

DH is painting all the skirting boards in preparation for new carpets. The current carpets have been in situ since 1997 and are slightly raggedy (and blue!!) and we put off replacing them until our sadly old and incontinent dogs had passed. I can safely say that they may be exceptionally old carpets but they might also be the cleanest carpets in the UK as they have been repeatedly shampooed .... patch by patch..... for the past 2 years! 🐶

DH also tried to put up the new curtains I bought for DS1s room. Then discovered that my top-of-the head measurements were completely off and they are not big enough. Never mind. They are a lovely rich material so I will re-purpose them as coverings for some of our side tables in the sitting room. They will go very nicely I think.

So in short, I am not doing that much but DH is project-ing steadily.

MoreCloudsThanYouCanImagine · 22/05/2023 07:02

Good morning! I hope you are all feeling better @ComeTheSpringLobelia after the loss of your little companion 💕
New carpets sound like a lovely treat. We have similarly shampooed but stained carpets here, due to the presence of various pets over the years.

I have been making small but useful steps around the place so I'm feeling happy with that.

I have a big challenge with procrastination, and struggle with doing little but important jobs like eg booking appointments, measuring for curtains, painting skirting boards etc, if the house is not decluttered and tidy. And so when I have a bit of time I'm incline to try and do that instead, and fall short, and still not do the small thing.

Last year I was on it and quite pleased with myself, so today I'm going to do a one hour only flylady home blessing, and then measure up for those damn curtains, and see if they and the stringy thing they hang on can be got online, because to be frank if I can't get a thing online, I don't want it! Which reminds me, I need to order something that I promised to get for my mother. Off to do that right now!

Have a great Monday everyone
@RunningKatie I'm sorry, I missed your post a few days ago but good to hear you're settling in your new job 💐

Thinking of you all, especially our good friend @FatSealSmugSoup and hoping she's well and just elsewhere on MN 💕

SpiritOfEdna · 22/05/2023 13:14

morning all

House is a bit of a tip. In good news the blinds have finally been fitted and look very classy. Shutters for the bay windows are 5 weeks away yet. The plumber has delayed coming to take radiators off the walls until tomorrow; one of the radiators must know as it is hanging off the wall a little bit more today. Yesterday we started to strip the wallpaper off the long through lounge ready for decorating, and it(mostly) all came down in half an hour.

For today:

  • take more photos to sell stuff on Vinted or eBay
  • another trip to the tip
  • power wash the yard now we know how to use the machine :-)
  • wash the curtains before they go back up in the back bedroom

That's it all for today, work is being a mare.

SoE

RunningKatie · 22/05/2023 20:30

Dd has been poorly this weekend, so of course dh has now had to join in as he never likes to be out done on the illness front.
We had a good sort out of dd's bedroom yesterday. She hates doing it but managed ok with small tasks. Sadly it's still chaos in there!----

SpiritOfEdna · 23/05/2023 15:02

for today:

  • 2 x dresses sold on Vinted, my goal is to do one new listing per day. Now need to work out how to send them to their new owners - need jiffy bags first
  • Plumber just arrived - cannot wait to see what has fallen down the back of the radiator in the hall. I think of it as the Home of Missing Things
  • Gym session done this morning with renewed vigor.
  • Work is marginally better today
  • Speak to next door neighbours about the junk in the alley needing to be moved before it is re-paved next week.
  • the house feels like it has just been moved in to with piles of stuff everywhere - it is making me feel itchy
Think that is it for now. SoE
Aria999 · 23/05/2023 17:53

We do not have asbestos in the attic 😊

Chap came, looked, said it is blown cellulose, and didn't charge me. Win!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/05/2023 19:54

@Aria999 yea! Good news and money savings in the long run for you! Asbestos is a real pain to deal with when you need to reno: testing, permits, etc.
@SpiritOfEdna good for you re the selling! You've inspired me to look into doing this (adds to very long to-do list...).

Feeling a bit better here after having been sick 15 (!!!) days now. Yes, counting because I'm just amazed I can't shake it. Convinced it's covid. Anyway, muddling along as we do and paid some bills online but filed the paper copies I still insist on getting through the mail. 🤷‍♀️
Tidied Havoc's toy box and playpen while listening to Manifest on Netflix which I'm binging.
Washing and bleaching a large load of white towels and washcloths (yes, I do this a lot).
Planning dinner and poked through freezer... will be lamb ragu with penne.
Will need to go to costco pater fir milk and fruit/veg and will be returning rotten bag of zucchini purchased last Thursday but discovered rotting Sunday. Quite gross. Noticed packing date was May 3! 🤢
Quality and selection of produce has been awful here and so expensive I'm no longer shy about returning. How is it in the UK?
Will vacuum shortly. Happy puttering everyone. 🙃

SpiritOfEdna · 24/05/2023 11:27

@Aria999 - Good news about the attic
@Mumtobabyhavoc - Do it! I have my wardrobes all dismantled and I am determined not to have anything in there when they are reassembled that I have bought ages ago and still has tags on it and get rid of everything that is 2 sizes ago

Today:

  • shift things around in bedroom so there is room for the wardrobes
  • Send the two dresses off now I have Jiffy bags: have let buyers they are on the way
  • Empty the dresser in the living room so it can be moved for decorating - its very heavy

Busy afternoon for meetings for me, have a good day all.

SoE

RunningKatie · 24/05/2023 11:32

Yesterday I threw out a load of lego set boxes, no idea why we were keeping them. The recycling has gone this morning so that was good timing.
Today I've mended the shoe rack and binned random old school shoes, and I've emptied the bottom of my wardrobe looking for my sandals. Managed to find a tshirt that was a Christmas gift for dh so also presented him with that. He was perplexed and pleased.
We are having such lovely weather, I feel I'm wasting it if I don't have washing on the line.

Peridot1 · 24/05/2023 13:14

Hi everyone

I am still here and not achieving much. Which has led to feeling overwhelmed and guilty and avoiding the thread. Daft I know!

Like @MoreCloudsThanYouCanImagine i have a problem with procrastination. Which is why this thread was so helpful for me.

I have gotten into a bit of a mental slump and panic/anxious mess this week.

Last summer DH went to a charity cricket match with a few other guys from the village. They bid for a catered bbq for 50 in the silent auction. And they won it. And we are hosting it. But our garden is a mess. And DH does bits but not other bits but won’t let me get anyone in to do it as he wants to do it. And it’s 1.5 acres. So a big job. I had a bit of a meltdown on Sunday as came out to help him with some things and he was doing a random job that wasn’t on the list to get done before the bbq. So I lost the plot. Said if it wasn’t all done I was cancelling the sodding bbq.

Ended up feeling on the verge of a panic attack all day Monday as well. I think a lots of things have been building up really. I’m really missing being able to go back to Dublin to my Dad’s house. Am trying to arrange a trip but trying to co-ordinate places to stay is tricky. So I’ve been putting that off. I don’t think I had realised how beneficial I found it being able to just decamp there on my own. And I had been approached about becoming a school governor which I was going to do but the whole thing seemed way more intensive than I had been led to believe and I was starting to feel panicked about all of that. So I decided not to go ahead with that which has been a relief. I let them know yesterday.

DH has stepped up the garden and I’m feeling less panicky about it. Even managed to do some gardening myself yesterday. For some reason the garden has a tendency to get me feeling really overwhelmed. And yet in nice weather it’s my happy place. I want it to look nice but I don’t want to feel I have to do it all! DH is obsessed by the lawns and cuts them regularly but never strips the edges so it looks a mess and I let it all annoy me and it builds up into an explosion.

The house itself is generally quite tidy but still has quite a bit I want to get done. Particularly in my bedroom and wardrobe. I was getting somewhere with that but have ground to a halt and it’s now more of a mess than ever. And I’m back at just not knowing where to start. So I’m not starting!

Anyway. Sorry this has been so long. Once I started it all came out! And it’s a long way of saying I need to get back to just doing bits every day. It all really helps and helped me so much before.

I miss @FatSealSmugSoup too and really hope she is ok.

petalpower · 24/05/2023 13:48

I’m sorry you’ve been having a bit of a time of it @Peridot1 . Being a governor is a big commitment (I’ve been there as chair of govs) and it sounds like you’ve made the right decision for you. It must be hard not having your dad’s house in Dublin now too. Tell us what you need done with your wardrobe and clothes and we can give you an idea of where to start! I once read either an article or a book that said to start with your sock drawer. It’s a small achievable task and gives a sense of satisfaction when it’s sorted out.
Since coming back from our few days away (a bit of an ordeal trying to sort out all the aged and ill oldies) I’ve planted out all my veggie plants in my veg garden and have potted on all the baby tomato plants in the greenhouse. Very pleased with myself yesterday as I put a message on our village WhatsApp offering my surplus veggie plants for free and they’d all gone to good homes by the end of the day.
Must dash - off to see care home auntie. It’s a beautiful day so hoping to manage to get her into their garden for a short while.

Aria999 · 24/05/2023 14:35

Today:

I have cut DH's hair

I need to mend a pair of jeans and a stuffed toy that have been sitting around forlornly for about 3 months

I must change the sheets and towels and do some housework. We had a deep clean a couple of weeks ago and it lulled me into a false sense of security but things are getting dirty again.

And I really ought to look for more work! It's been so nice having a few days of downtime.

SpringLobelia · 24/05/2023 14:51

Hi all.

So sorry @Peridot1 you are feeling overwhelmed and low. I am glad you said no to the governors job if it was stressing you out. I have a terrible habit of not saying no when I ought to. I am trying to break that.

Tired and a bit depleted here. DH is loads better though so that is good. But I have lost all enthusiasm with pretty much everyhting at the moment. I need to tidy the house but cannot be bothered.

Aria999 · 24/05/2023 16:38

@SpringLobelia I know that feeling well! Glad DH is better!

@Peridot1 that all sounds really stressful! It's never fun to be reliant on someone else for something important when they are Just Not Doing It! I know this isn't entirely the point but will the people coming to the bbq actually be the kind to care if the garden is a bit messy?
