Luckily I'm quite robust and couldn't give a damn but for your entertainment

I'm having a big clear out and putting things in Facebook and olio for people to take.

This morning I listed a play pen on a local group and after about half an hour.got a message from a lady who will come.and take.it this evening.. brilliant.

Just before marking it as taken gone got a message from.someone else

"Need this .. please drop off at X address between 3 and 5pm today" I replied saying it was taken and anyway collection only and left it at that.

Then received

" I can't believe you would give it away without even asking why I need it I bet I need it more than anyone else "

"You're so selfish I bet you sold it instead"

"You don't care about anything but clearing out your house you couldn't give a sh*t about a young mum like me"

"If you've got any other children's stuff message me and you can drop it over tomorrow, I need things"

"You obviously don't care if my child gets hurt because they dont have a play pen.. youve got to give it to me, dont be heartless"

" How am I supposed to come and get it Ive got children you need to drop it off today"

I ignored her and blocked her and now receiving stroppy messages from another person saying they're her friend, I'm victimising her,.I shouldn't just give things away without talking to people about what they need it for everyone deserves a chance..

and best of all:

" you should be dying of shame for treating a young mum like this I hope you carry the guilt.to your dying day"

WTAF ?????

I've blocked them too and await next messages with interest. I strongly suspect they "friend" is also her. I am having quite a boring day cleaning out the loft so this is brightening it up no end

Some people are toxic! I was selling new items handmade on marketplace. I had listed as free but stated in the listing price varied on size on order etc as made to measure. There wasn’t this option on the front of the advert. I got a really nasty message from someone about false advertising etc etc. They blocked me before I could even respond. I had never dealt with them before. After a bit of investigation they were selling similar items! No surprises there…

And does anyone get a bit suspicious of those ‘posting for my friend whose house has burned down including all the Christmas presents for her 7 children, we are a lovely community and sure we can make the kiddies Christmas magical by replacing them, just drop the gifts with me and I’ll make sure they get to her’

And people believe it!!!!!

My father passed away last October.

Mid November my DM was asked in the street by a neighbour if she had received the donation yet.

DM was completely confused.

Turns out the scumbag over the street had gone around all of the local area, on the DAY my father died, to 'collect' for my family. He'd then kept the lot.

He was rather red-faced when my brothers went round to collect it for DM. No idea if the few hundred pounds was all he had scammed out of people, but with the neighbours consent she donated it to a charity that meant something to Dad.

People can be scum.

BloodyHellHarry · 13/01/2023 17:47

And this is why I take stuff I want to give away for free to the charity shop.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/01/2023 17:49

I dare say this is a well-used strategy for getting free stuff - to sell on!

365names · 13/01/2023 17:50

Chowtime · 13/01/2023 13:47

I'd be screen-shotting those messages and putting them back up on the facebook page for everyone to see

This

365names · 13/01/2023 17:50

Also report her and her friend to group admin

Cakewineorgin · 13/01/2023 17:51

Someone in our village group had this but screenshot and posted the messages one by one. Each time they scribbled out the name they missed a bit so after a few posts it was clear to see who it was. 🤣

ColdHandsHotHead · 13/01/2023 17:53

I had a largish hobby item to give away so I contacted a local interest group (think canoe so I contacted the canoe club, it wasn't a canoe but similar) to see if anyone was interested. Someone was, came and collected it. I mentioned it in passing to a friend who told me she was 'gutted' I hadn't offered it to her. I'd no idea she was interested in this particular hobby and it REALLY pissed me off to be told that as a friend, she should have had first dibs. People are weird.

Same, I gave up on facebook after the last choosing-beggar (advert was free, pick up only, got "I need you to drive this over to me, I'm only 20 minutes away, can't take public transport as suffer from anxiety, I also saw on another page you offer sewing skills for free, I have a few things need mending, you can do them when you come over but can you do it in your car, should only take you an hour or so". Er, no). We luckily have a ton of charity shops nearby so they get everything now.

NewYearNewCareer · 13/01/2023 17:56

This is funny!

I think o would’ve posted the messages as well! Clearly unhinged.

Unicorntastic · 13/01/2023 17:56

Never get anything but hassle for giving stuff away free, no good deed goes unpunished OP!

BruceAndNosh · 13/01/2023 17:59

People are so rude.
I advertised an item which in hindsight I realised I'd badly underpriced it so had a ridiculous amount of immediate interest.
I'm working my way through all the messages, concentrating on the ones that actually show genuine interest instead of obviously just hitting the "is this still available" generic response.
One of the latter follows up his initial terse response with an even worse “?????“
The rude ones get told Sold

Chumpfriend · 13/01/2023 17:59

I actively avoid EBay now as I think it’s spilled over to there.

Sold a bed frame second hand and there were a couple of the end caps missing for the slats but otherwise in good condition - didn’t affect the bed at all. Also highlighted on listing. Buyer asked loads of questions and tried to offer a lower price than she eventually paid - I had loads of watchers/interest and so said no thanks.

Unfortunately she won anyway and was super precious when she came to pick it up - as though she’d bought a priceless antique rather than a second hand kid’s bed.

Subsequently got a load of messages ALL IN CAPTAL LETTERS ABOUT HOW I’D TRIED TO CHEAT HER. AND HOW I SHOULD SEND HER SOME MONEY BACK OR SHE’D RAISE A COMPLAINT.

Told her I’d drive to pick it up rather than let her have it and she eventually went away. But it was a horrible experience and has really put me off selling/giving anything away to individuals. Charity shops all the way.

Echobelly · 13/01/2023 18:01

I once had on Freecycle someone give me a 'I thought the rules were it goes to the first person who replies'

My personal rule is if all replies the same, it goes to first, if first reply is a generic 'Is this item still available?' and a later one is 'Please could I have this [good reason that they need the thing], I can come after 5 tonight' then it goes to the later one.

WonderingWanda · 13/01/2023 18:02

Wow, that's a bit crazy!

fairgame84 · 13/01/2023 18:02

@Chumpfriend it's definitely spilled onto ebay. I sold an item for collection only. The buyer paid then messaged to say she couldn't collect because she lived 3 hours away so I'd have to deliver. No thanks cheeky twat.

Bobshhh · 13/01/2023 18:05

I've been trying to get rid of an oven for weeks and it's been a whole heap of time wasting and scammers.

I put a sofa on Freecycle once and the abusive messages I got from people who didn't message in time were horrific, put me off ever doing it again... Until now

A suggestion - there are charities, often hospices who will collect furniture and sell it in their shops.

Our council also has a shop for furniture. I assume they charge for collection but the hospices don't seem to.

I am going to take the easy option and find someone to take the large stuff away, even if I have to pay a few £.

Yes but they are fussy (not blaming them) they wouldnt take a full leather suite because the fireproof tags had been removed. I get it, but God I had to take that entire suite apart, I mean into manageable pieces by myself and take to the tip in 3 trips. The whole saga took days, from notifying the charity to taking it apart and I had to keep it all that time, dry. Next time I'll stick it on fb. Id rather block numerous cfs than take a suite apart again.

Seems to me these kind of nutters are women more often than men. It’s very strange

Could be entitled awful person but I’d say addict who thinks they can get a few quid for a fix from it. Block and forget.

Healthy people don’t behave like that.

I always reply is this still available because I’m autistic and it’s one of the standard relies offered- easiest to use set replies than guess. Never realised that was classed as rude. I’ll find an alternative.

Ultimately it’s yours to do with as you wish though.

Cookerhood · 13/01/2023 18:23

We used freecycle & FB marketplace to clear my parents' house a few years ago. We had a lot of no shows, some CFs - "What else have you got that I can have?" We also had a lot of people contact us and say their name was Sarah, Sophie, Claire or similar. When they turned up they were invariably a middle aged man who was simply "flipping" the items.

momtoboys · 13/01/2023 18:30

There is a creator on Tik Tok who reads and reenacts messages back and forth on sales like this on FB. They are hilarious!
