When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

Ours are half down, we’re going away for New Year tomorrow and I don’t want to get back in January and still have them up.

Whattheladybird · 26/12/2022 10:13

Do you put them up really early? Mine have been up a fortnight and will stay up til after new year.

pompei8309 · 26/12/2022 10:14

2nd of January here

Was thinking tomorrow

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 26/12/2022 10:14

Ours will come down either tomorrow or Thursday. We are out all day Wednesday and I want them gone before the weekend

Tittyfilarious81 · 26/12/2022 10:15

Mine have been up since the first, they will be took down tomorrow, I don't like them up at new year

Ifailed · 26/12/2022 10:15

I've been out today, already seen a few xmas trees by the bins.

SockQueen · 26/12/2022 10:16

Twelfth Night, so 5th January. Ours always go up late though - tree only decorated on the 19th this year.

DiddyHeck · 26/12/2022 10:18

2nd January. We're all back to work on the 3rd, so I want it done by then.

upfucked · 26/12/2022 10:18

We are in holiday on the 5th so probably the 3rd. We tree needs to be out by the 5th for collection. We only have a tree and wreath. Those people who are sick of their decorations - when did you put them up and how many do you have?

RoseAndRose · 26/12/2022 10:20

Not until Twelfth Night

i really don’t want to cut a festival short

(though of course I understand why those with birthdays before then would want to have them clear of Christmas and its decorations)

But just like its pagan forerunners Christmas- in its full 12 days - is way to stave off the drear gloom for a while

speakout · 26/12/2022 10:20

I would love to take them down today, but we have family visiting for lunch on Thursday. We will be exchanging gifts and the buffet meal will have a festive feel.
So as soon as that is over.

MaverickSnoopy · 26/12/2022 10:21

Always 12th night. They've been up just over a week.

Cuppasoupmonster · 26/12/2022 10:21

Up first weekend of December, down first weekend of January

asblindasabat · 26/12/2022 10:22

Good grief. It’s only Boxing Day. Bit too early to have them put away tbh. But each to their own and all that!

BogRollBOGOF · 26/12/2022 10:30

12th night. Christmas has only just started!
This year the trees went up the first Sunday in December and the outdoor lights the following week.
I didn't get round to setting up the tinselly stuff. Some years I do, some years I don't.

The lights matter most to me as they help cheer the darkest, short days into January. The pagans and early Christians knew what they were doing.
I hate the plunge into post-Christmas dark and dreariness, bloody depressing.

reluctantbrit · 26/12/2022 10:33

12th night here as well. Tree is only up since the 22nd, we only decorate small from 1st Advent onwards (wreath, mantle piece and windows) plus candles and the tree is for Christmas itself.

cobblers123 · 26/12/2022 10:35

I was only thinking this while I was washing up and I'm going to do it 2nd January now, I'm a bit fed up with them to be honest.

SquigglePigs · 26/12/2022 10:39

Usually just after New Year/ before we go back to work in January. I understand the 12th night tradition but I feel like I want everything done and fresh for the new year before we go back to work.

When I was a kid they always came down in the New Years Day clean up after we'd had a party on New Years Eve. The last few years we've been to friends for NY and we generally can't face taking them all down when we get home so it's done on the 2nd Jan.

Oblomov22 · 26/12/2022 10:40

3rd Jan?

Figgypudding123 · 26/12/2022 10:41

I always do 2nd January. I don't see the point in 12th night because nothing actually happens after New Years Day.

lollipoprainbow · 26/12/2022 10:41

Can never understand those who get their decorations down as quickly as possible. I adore my real tree and always feel sad when I have to put out for recycling.

stargirl1701 · 26/12/2022 10:43

They went up on Christmas Eve and will come down on Twelfth Night. The 12 Days of Christmas are the most restful part of our year. Feasting, friends and no work!

I am deeply tempted to try to keep them up until Candlemas in February but DH would go spare!

I prefer keeping traditions in the correct season to help with 'feeling' the rhythm of the year to combat depression. Winter just started on the Solstice and I am looking forward to all this season will bring!

StampOnTheGround · 26/12/2022 10:45

The start of January, I find it bizarre that the odd few people take it down on Boxing Day (or even before New Year!)

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/12/2022 10:46

They go up on the 24th and come down on the 6th
