When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

My theory is it moves. I’m basing this on the fact that I attempted to buy Christmas decorations around the 15th and 16th and lots of places had got rid of them or were selling the last few bits discounted. Sainsbury’s had definitely replaced their display with New Year stuff. M&S had virtually nothing other than food left.

I wonder if it's regional. I do notice things in shops earlier but I bought some decorations on the 23rd & I do my food shop then & xmas eve. Reduced but still loads about.

chary · 26/12/2022 14:06

I've never seen John Lewis & the like clear of xmas stuff on the 15/16th.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/12/2022 14:14

On the 6th January. Tree (real) went up on the 11th Dec, since a guest was arriving on the 12th, other decs bit by bit later. One or two things have only been dug out today - dd1 and family (3 little Gdcs) are arriving tomorrow, first time since before first decs went up, so I want it all super-Christmassy for them.

John Lewis still had their Christmas shop going Wilko’s May have done but I didn’t manage to get to that end of town.

Next year I’ll start in November 😂

ThrowAwayOne · 26/12/2022 14:20

Ours is up since first of Decemeber so today I've taken down all the cluttery ones like the ornaments around the fireplace etc but will leave the tree and window lights etc until 2nd Jan.

We have a TINY living room so with the new toys etc it's just mayhem in here so I'm glad of a little freed up space now/

isittheholidaysyet · 26/12/2022 14:26

They went up on the 23rd (still have a couple of bits which I haven't got around to putting up yet!)

They won't come down before the sixth of Jan. Will probably have them up for a couple of weeks after that. I'd like to keep them up till Feb 2nd, but the tree won't last that long and we have a birthday at the end of Jan.

Nativity scene will stay up till Feb 2nd. After all, the Kings won't be in it till 6th, so no point taking it down as soon as its complete!

@TheBirdintheCave - yours isn’t a tradition we follow. Christmas starts with Sinterklass on 5 December and Christmas Day is the main event (not the seventh day - not heard of that before). I like a fresh clean house for the NY - don’t want any decorations hanging around.

New Year and Christmas are separate, very different celebrations.

I said New Years Eve/Day are the seventh and eighth days of Christmas.

I've not heard of Sinterklaas before, will have to look into it :)

Shops clearly weren’t expecting people with no decorations to start decorating towards the end of December.

I tried to buy tree chocolates last week in two different supermarkets and despite shelves still stacked high with all sorts of Christmas snacks, there were none to be found. The woman I asked in Tesco laughed at me and told me I should have bought them in November. Erm, no thanks!

Finally found them in Aldi, which still had loads.

dutysuite · 26/12/2022 14:41

I keep mine up until about the 2nd Jan, I like having them up for New Year’s Day as we always have another Christmas dinner, this year we have family coming we didn’t see at Christmas. I don’t worry about what others do and when they put up or take down their tree.

Always4Brenner · 26/12/2022 14:43

Down 12th night though the cards can go tomorrow.

AutumnCrow · 26/12/2022 14:51

Twelfth Night or Epiphany, whatever takes my fancy. We didn't put them up till the 23rd and 24th though, and I've just put three cards on 'the festive bunting' which were in parcels we opened yesterday.

We have Hogmanay or a New Year's dinner so it's nice to have the decorations around, including my festive tartan table cloth and oven gloves!

Cocolapew · 26/12/2022 14:57

I ended up taking them down today, I didn't have a big tree, just a small one to fit on my unit because I have a mad puppy this year
I have fairy lights up all year anyway, and kept my new sequin garland up as well.

When do you take down the Christmas decorations?
fetesname · 26/12/2022 14:59

That's so pretty @Cocolapew

Cocolapew · 26/12/2022 15:02

Thank you, I love lights 😄

Gingerninja4 · 26/12/2022 15:03

Down and away already as that suits us

RudeElfTheRainDear · 26/12/2022 15:05

Our scone down the first work free day after NY. So this year that will be the 2nd Jan.

I do love the clean, simple feel of the house without them (even though I love the cosy feel when they go up). Plus, it'll be times to get hyacinths and daffodil bulbs up indoors and look forward to spring!

Giggorata · 26/12/2022 15:10

Twelfth Night, as is traditional.
They go up either on the Solstice or Christmas Eve, depending on how busy I am.
Nowadays, we only do the tree and the fireplace, with a wreath on the door.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/12/2022 15:11

A couple of years ago I thought I’d leave one set of lights up( warm white in a huge houseplant, more like a mini tree) until the clocks changed in March to summertime.
They never came down! Still going strong.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/12/2022 15:28

SockQueen · 26/12/2022 10:16

Twelfth Night, so 5th January. Ours always go up late though - tree only decorated on the 19th this year.

Yes me too.

I find it really odd people are fed up with them now. I do understand why you might want them down on the second but not before that. it’s still the Christmas season! I think people put them up far too early.

PollyEsther · 26/12/2022 15:37

We've had to take ours down today and it's very frustrating. DS made us get our tree earlier than usual as he was on a school trip the weekend we wanted to get it. He then 'couldn't be bothered' to help decorate it when we did. Angry So the tree was dead before yesterday and really had to come down today as we're away to visit family tomorrow.

We usually have it down by New Year's Eve though as I don't like to enter a new year with faffing!

89redballoons · 26/12/2022 15:58

Ours go up the weekend after DC1's birthday which is in early December. Down on 12th night. The crib scene stays up until Candlemas. My mum keeps all her decs up until Candlemas, but only puts them up on about the 22nd.

I can't imagine taking them down today! We are still in full Christmas mode here - DC are in their Christmas jumpers, we had reheated Christmas dinner for our lunch, and after the DC are in bed tonight we will be tucking into the cheese and catching up on Chrismas telly. Each to their own, though.

Walkerbean16 · 26/12/2022 15:58

We had to take ours down today and guests yesterday broke our brand new tree 😩 thought we would get an artificial one so it would last years and it lasted three weeks.

Walkerbean16 · 26/12/2022 15:58

As our* not and!

stopitstopitnow · 26/12/2022 16:00

I never put mine up.

user1497787065 · 26/12/2022 16:09

Mine will be down on Friday. I couldn't go into the new year with them up.
