When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

February 6th 😉👑

How come? I know candlemas is 2 Feb (that’s when mine come down). Interested to know the significance of the 6th.

Nat6999 · 27/12/2022 03:28

We haven't even bothered putting them up, all we have are ribbons on the doors with cards stapled to them.

It's when the Queen took hers down.

...I don't leave them up until then for that reason, but it's a good excuse when people ask. I leave ours up until sometime in February, winter is depressing without twinkly lights.

Ah, interesting to know. Lovely that she had that tradition for her own family memories.

Am now considering giving myself a few extra days for my tree!

chary · 27/12/2022 09:25

Because it's a chore taking them down isn't it.

I have 2 trees but not loads of room decorations. I have really useful boxes with inserts in them, some are lined with bubble wrap etc. Makes it super quick to take them down & put away.

Size of peoples homes must also play a part in how quickly things are put away too. If you have a decent amount of space leaving them until Feb is much easier than if you’re falling over everything to accommodate a tree.

chary · 27/12/2022 09:55

that's true

We have a small house but have decorations in proportion to the space. Tree is outside this year as it has grown, but we could get a smaller tree if need be.

Usually its Jan - I put them up late too as well but will probably take them down soon as want them away before I go back to work. And I don't enjoy xmas that much and I don't hate January - usually quite like it as a time to reflect on my plans for the year, spring clean, declutter and whatnot. I usually take down the xmas tree and get in some nice bright flowers.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/12/2022 10:59

Ours didn't all go up until Dec 23rd so no way are they coming down yet. Would be very strange having Hogmanay and the New Year celebrations without decorations. I hate that the shops take them down before Christmas, Sainsbury's had no decorations up on Christmas Eve, felt very sad (although they go up so early I can imagine the staff are desperate to see them go). I like the idea of having some decorations up until Candlemas, we have a small potted tree in one room, might keep that one up (big one has to come down first week of January so it's picked up for composting).

Tomorrow. It all drives me mad

Ramekin · 27/12/2022 11:20

We keep ours up until the 6th Jan.

But it only went up on the 21st, so it stays up just over 2 weeks.

I prefer to put it up late and take it down after the 12 days of Christmas, I agree I wouldn’t want it taking up space in the living room for weeks and weeks.

But everyone I know puts theirs up earlier. The DC know I will never agree to it going up before they break up from school though. They do get impatient to do it, but I think having to wait prolongs the anticipation and excitement.

Why do you have up decorations that drive you mad? Maybe you should scale them back to things you like? You could have a smaller tree or a more muted tree or whatever suits you and make everything else more minimal. I get that all the piles of new toys and extra visitor's stuff is annoying and I'm currently spending all my time keeping on top of the kitchen with extra people in the house but the decorations really shouldn't be annoying.

TimBoothseyes · 27/12/2022 14:42

Most of mine came down after lunch on Christmas day. It also happens to be my birthday that day so the afternoon is when it stops being Jesus' birthday and starts being mine. The rest of the decorations come down on New year's day.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 27/12/2022 16:29

We ended up taking ours down today. It was going to be Friday but we wanted to have a day of fun on Friday before back to school and work next week. We are busy tomorrow and Thursday. The house does feel lovely and clean and tidy being back to normal.

MrsJBaptiste · 27/12/2022 17:10

We'll do ours on Monday 2nd before we're back at work/school on the 3rd. We have so many trees, lights, decorations... it's a full day's job 😬

I can't believe some people do it on Christmas Day!
How can you be bothered with the mess? Surely you want to just sit, eat and drink on Christmas Day? 😯

It took DP 20 minutes to pack away the decorations he took down. The lights and small tree are still here. It was a seamless transition from Christmas to birthday. We ate lots of cake, party food and drank wine afterwards.

lobsterkiller · 28/12/2022 15:11

I didn't put anything up this year with the exception of lights...They will stay until the days start to get longer.

When I did put the tree up, it was only up for a week or so and then taken down usually on boxing day. I don't have kids or live with anyone though.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/12/2022 15:27

I'm waiting for the day someone on here says they take them down on Christmas Eve. Meanwhile in the real world all our neighbours have their decorations up till early January like 99% of the population.

DappledThings · 28/12/2022 15:59

I got a new outdoor light up reindeer in the sale today so I've just added to my decorations for days 5-12 of Christmas still to come.

DeadButDelicious · 28/12/2022 16:06

DD goes back to school on the 4th so I'll take them down then. Don't fancy trying to do with her 'helping'. 😂

TerfOnATrain · 28/12/2022 16:08

Mine are down.

I took them down yesterday and them cleaned all the house then went to the tip with the tree and all the Xmas excess rubbish, bottles and boxes. My tree was, as usual, the first in the garden waste skip.

The house feels all fresh after the initial bareness.
