When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

3rd january here
I’ve taken them down before New Years before but dc are older and really happy and I’ve cut back on a lot of ours so I love everything we have (fresh flowers and real tree and simple fairy lights) so the house doesn’t feel cluttered

Toeyd · 26/12/2022 12:15

It's coming down at some point today. Hate having it up after boxing day.

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/12/2022 12:15

On the 6th. But they only went up on the 17th/18th.

May replace the candles on the Advent wreath with some new white ones though. Tempted to maybe string some lights up until candlemas though. Don’t think I can keep the decorations for that long.

2nd January. We're all back to work on the 3rd, so I want it done by then.

Same here

Cocolapew · 26/12/2022 12:19

Tomorrow when everyone else has gone to work.

Sux2buthen · 26/12/2022 12:20

They go up mid November here and down New Year's Eve/ day. I will be gutted to see them go but plenty of time to enjoy still

MissCalamity · 26/12/2022 12:22

We put ours up after DS's birthday on the 15th December, so it was the 17th by the time it went up. Will probably be the 1st or 2nd it will be down as we're both back at work on the 3rd Jan.

How sad! Christmas has only just begun and many people are off work/school for the coming week. Why wouldn't you see this as the festive period? Eat, drink and be merry while you can, before life goes back to normal after new year. But I guess if you've not been able to restrain yourself from acting like it's Christmas for the last month then it's not surprising you're bored with it now.

Ffs. It’s not sad. Just for your info, many, many people don’t have the next week off work. I hate all this ‘do as I say’ shit. It doesn’t impact you what anyone else does in their own home so take your condescending tone elsewhere.

BeverleyMacca1 · 26/12/2022 12:24

I’m Jan 1st

RuthW · 26/12/2022 12:26

As soon as I can after boxing day. This year it will be new years day

GrannieD · 26/12/2022 12:27

2nd January as I am jetting off to the sunshine that week

palygold · 26/12/2022 12:27

Twelfth night.

Exasperatednow · 26/12/2022 12:29

5th January but never put them up until at least the weekend before Christmas. Christmas for us is Christmas eve onwards.

PikachusSmarterBrother · 26/12/2022 12:30

Usually New Year's Eve as I like to start the new year with a fresh start.

palygold · 26/12/2022 12:30

I like that some people are keeping some decorations up until Candlemas. I remember that from another thread. I think it would be nice to leave some of the ivy up until then (if it lasts).

Calibrachoa · 26/12/2022 12:30

Probably start taking it down new years day. I'll see how I feel at the time

palygold · 26/12/2022 12:37

We only put them up on winter solstice this year. It's usually a few days before Christmas at least.

I'm surprised how many people (not thinking of this thread) don't seem to know about Twelfth Night. It was the usual thing when I was a child.

Ooohh. I hadn’t thought about Ivy. Might actually get round to pruning the stuff in the garden.

midgetastic · 26/12/2022 12:40

I'd love to know if Those taking them down before 12th night without significant reason ( going away eg) put them up relatively early?

Ours corne down 12th night but tend to go up about a week before Christmas

Parker231 · 26/12/2022 12:41

They go up the week before Christmas and down on NYE - Christmas is over by then and I like the house clean, tidy and organised to start the next year.

palygold · 26/12/2022 12:42

I prefer keeping traditions in the correct season to help with 'feeling' the rhythm of the year to combat depression. Winter just started on the Solstice and I am looking forward to all this season will bring!

I know of people who do winter decorations and some sort of nod to the season, even if it's just a table centre piece or seasonal garlands, candles and lights.

There are books about year rhythms as you probably already know. It's certainly interesting.

12th night doesn’t have any significance for us (not exactly sure of what date it is) so irrelevant when the decorations and tree come down

midgetastic · 26/12/2022 12:47

I guess I am trying to see if people tend to have decorations up for the same amount of time ?

Do many people do a full 5ish weeks - dec 1 to 5/6th jan ? ( culture dependent I think)

Or on average do most people have decorations up for say 3 weeks - it's just which 3 weeks that varies ?

Do you have a link to any particularly good ones. If the whole country is going to shit I’ve decided this will be the year to do this properly and at least the house will be nice.

I’ve got a whole abundance of Catholic feasts and traditions to start with. But you can’t have too many.
