When do you take down the Christmas decorations?

I am always itching to do it on Boxing Day. I don't, but I want to. I usually last until New year's Eve, but I think this year has felt really unchristmassy and I want everything taken down now! I will keep it up for the kids but does anyone else just want it all put away?

How sad! Christmas has only just begun and many people are off work/school for the coming week. Why wouldn't you see this as the festive period? Eat, drink and be merry while you can, before life goes back to normal after new year. But I guess if you've not been able to restrain yourself from acting like it's Christmas for the last month then it's not surprising you're bored with it now.

Scriabin · 26/12/2022 10:47

When I've had enough of them/can be bothered.

I used to take them down on boxing day, or shortly afterwards for a few years as I was fed up of them by then - this was very much related to having a smaller house though.

Now we've had extensions etc. I usually use them up until NYD or NYE. I generally want them away by NYD - apart from anything I know I won't have as much time after that but I also tend to have the urge to want the house back, give it a good clean and start the year fresh.

Totally agree about trying to keep with the tradition of Christmas. The festive season officially ends on the 12th night!

Twelfth Night

TowerStork · 26/12/2022 10:50

January 6th. They go up a week before sometimes later and stay up for the 12 days. I find it sad that Christmas is increasingly reduced to one day

chary · 26/12/2022 10:51

No never want to put it away early & even if I did I wouldn't have the time today or on NYE.

chary · 26/12/2022 10:52

I would find it odd personally to not have xmas decorations up at NYE & our council tree collection isn't until Jan anyway.

watchfulwishes · 26/12/2022 10:53

I put them up gradually and take them down gradually. The first things appear at the start of December, the final things are removed on Twelth Night. There is only Christmas Eve/Christmas Day/Boxing Day when absolutely everything is up - we make a lot of decorations each year so some only get finished late.

I have been thinking I might keep one set of lights up for the remainder of January, but they can be set to any colour so I will select different colours.

Soccermumamir · 26/12/2022 10:54

Sometime this week before NY

Beezknees · 26/12/2022 10:54

First weekend of Jan for me usually. Will do it on Saturday 6th.

kitcat15 · 26/12/2022 10:54

Ours will come down on friday.......got ro be down before new year.....find them very depressing and sad looking after new year

thismeansnothing · 26/12/2022 10:55

12th night.

But the real Xmas tree isn't fairing to well despite watering regularly. But I'll hold out. That might come down a bit early but the rest will be stopping up

DappledThings · 26/12/2022 10:55

Twelfth Night. I don't think anyone who takes them down earlier should be allowed to put them up in the first place.

TeenDivided · 26/12/2022 10:55

Take them down? Ours only went up on Wednesday!

This really shows the divide I think between the traditionalists (Christmas season is Christmas Eve - Twelfth Night) and the more modern (Christmas season is December 1st-Christmas Day).

Neither is 'wrong' I suppose, but I find the modern way slightly strange. Xmas Grin

Twelfth Night, so 5th January. Ours always go up late though - tree only decorated on the 19th this year.

Same here. Tree doesn't usually go up any earlier than around the 20th, then gets taken down on twelfth night.

There definitely seem to be two schools of thought! I also find the modern way very strange. It's odd to decorate so early that you're bored of it all by Boxing Day.

When my children were all at home they were always taken down on the 1st Jan, but for years it’s just me and my Dh so we or I should say I take them down on 27th Dec. I’ve just been out for walk and seen three Christmas trees outside ready to be collected ,

BaublesandBangles · 26/12/2022 11:00

Some time this week. I like to start the new year without them up.

MenopauseSucks · 26/12/2022 11:01

Twelfth Night.
I only decorate the house in the few days before Xmas. I always put the final touches to the tree on Christmas Eve whilst watching 'Carols from Kings'!

Call the decoration police and report them if you notice anyone doing what they want in their own hose.

MasterCherry · 26/12/2022 11:02

Christmas has only just started! We try to observe Advent as a season of preparation for Christmas, and then presents and treats get stretched out for a good few days over the week following Christmas Day. I really want us to enjoy this week with grandparents and time off work and school - it shouldn't feel like a massive anticlimax. Our decorations and lights won't come down until at least Epiphany on 6th Jan (and I wouldn't have a problem with keeping them longer either!).

Whattheladybird · 26/12/2022 10:13

Do you put them up really early? Mine have been up a fortnight and will stay up til after new year.

First weekend of December is when they go up. I'm definitely not a November decorator!

I don't put mine up early so I take them down on new year's day. IMO Boxing day is too soon. It's still Christmas.

isthisit83 · 26/12/2022 11:04

I like the idea of 12th night.... but our decorations have been up for a month already and we have a really small house so I just need my space back. Deep cleaning my bedroom right now and hoping to get the decs down later today.

We are in holiday on the 5th so probably the 3rd. We tree needs to be out by the 5th for collection. We only have a tree and wreath. Those people who are sick of their decorations - when did you put them up and how many do you have?

I put them up on the 4th, just got a tree with lights and lots of weird sentimental decorations on it. And a string of tiny silver stars across the ceiling. I want the tree gone. I had to move a chair to get it in. I want it all out and I want my living room back.
