Neighbours smoking marijuana in garden

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:22

We have new neighbours who appear to be very heavy marijuana users. They were outside smoking with umbrellas when it snowed and this is the third time they’ve been out today. I’ve had enough because the smell comes into our house even with the windows closed, principally my 7 year olds room and the kitchen. They also had a very loud party until 3 am at the weekend.

It is a normal residential street with mainly school age families and elderly people. The neighbour on the other side of them is in her 80s and has dementia. They must be working as the cost of housing is very high, but I’ve no idea how they can sustain a job given the amount of drugs?

I thought about popping over, but I’m nervous if it goes wrong they might be unpleasant. Would a community police officer come out to speak to them? I’ve never experienced something like this so grateful for advice on what to do.

Good luck with that 1.

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:33

sorry, what @vodkaredbullgirl ?

Not sure there's a huge amount you can do tbh. Police won't come out to a burglary so not sure they'll come out to a couple of adults smoking some weed in their back garden

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/12/2022 20:35

The y will not do anything.

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 20/12/2022 20:37

Some adults smoke weed in their own garden.
They had a party until late - at the weekend.
The police won't be interested.

The most you might be able to do is ask them to kindly move away from underneath THEIR window as the smell somehow travels up and into your house. Best of luck.

TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 20/12/2022 20:37

I agree. Police won't come out..

Newusernameaug · 20/12/2022 20:37

I’d just try speaking nicely to them, but during the day as you don’t want to go over when they’re already stoned.

im sure they have no idea you can smell it.

gothmothtime · 20/12/2022 20:38

Not much to be done about people smoking a joint in their garden op.

Unless they're growing or dealing the police won't be interested.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/12/2022 20:38

Weed smokers can be just normal people who hold down jobs OP. That might surprise you but honestly, you sound quite naive.
Many people smoke for pain, mh reasons, in lieu of any other vices or just because they want to.

I would mention something to them about the smoke coming in your house to your kids room and ask if they can smoke elsewhere on their property but be prepared for them to say no.
Move your kids room, move house, or learn to live around others.

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:38

Blimey! I thought that was the kind of thing community police were there for. Maybe I am just going to take my chances and ask them.

Report to police. They won’t do anything.
Reprot to police. They still won’t do anything.
Keep going - eventually the numbers will stack up and they won’t have any choice but to visit.

Make note of car reg. If they are smoking then driving. report that too.

Know who they are employed by - report their drug taking to them anonymously.

The stench from these drugs are vile. You can walk past a house with the windows closed and smell it. It’s vile, disgusting and people who think it’s only a bit of harmless, are wrong. It’s anti social, it’s illegal, it’s funding other crime and wrong doing.

Just have to do it all anonymously. Be careful not to get caught.

Treeeeeeee · 20/12/2022 20:39

Op we also have weed smoking neighbours and I truly feel your pain. It is awful, antisocial and has negative effects on all those around them

Littlechickenhead · 20/12/2022 20:40

If they’re smoking it outside, unless they’re literally under your window, I would just ignore it. It’s the middle of winter. If they are actually under your window, I would politely ask them if they could move away from it a bit.

I’m not sure why you would report it to the police. And it’s none of your business how they afford the house.

Was the party a one off or a regular occurrence? If it was a one off then ignore. If it’s regular then firstly speak to them in person and if they’re not receptive, go down the complaints route.

Our drug taking neighbour is in training to be a midwife for the nhs.

Can you imagine what can go wrong???

Saxiee · 20/12/2022 20:44

I don't see why a midwife who uses cannabis when she's not at work would be any worse than a midwife who drinks wine when she's not at work. As long as they aren't drunk or high on the job.

You realise that the vast majority of people who work in high intensive roles (police, firemen, doctors, nurses, midwives etc) will have a vice to help them get through their shifts?

Lcb123 · 20/12/2022 20:46

Sorry but you sound very naive. No worse having a joint than a couple of wines, regarding working. You can ask them to move away from your window but honestly the police have far higher priorities… I don’t think I ever leave my London flat without smelling weed

Valhalla17 · 20/12/2022 20:51

Speak to them politely, tell them it's going into your child's room, they have asthma and finding it difficult. Ask them to move a little further away from the windows. I know your child doesn't have a health issue but I would make something up to pull on their heart strings...

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:52

A few odd responses. This is not about judging you or even them.

People can do what they like but not be antisocial. It can literally be smelt in my house with the windows closed. I’m not comfortable with my children playing in their garden.

Just ask them nicely. If it’s a naice area they probably have jobs etc and don’t want any attention.

Yeah what’s the harm in a wee puff before they drives to work and helps deliver a baby. Might as well have a drink too whilst she’s at it.

And to btw, stress isn’t restricted to the public sector.

Baublesandtinsel · 20/12/2022 20:57

I just wonder how the smell can travel through the brick work and closed windows, my neighbours are smoking outside all the time only time i smell it is if window open.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 20/12/2022 20:57

It's barely illegal now it's so common!ace. My jury duty was for growing and supplying cannabis and no one wanted to convict them. They had about 3m pounds worth and the only thing they were convicted off was stealing electricity as they bypassed the meter.

Please do not report them to their employer. This happened to my DP and he was fired on the spot even though he was a good worker. It was an incredibly nasty thing for someone to do. Would you do it if someone enjoyed a few beers?

AboutTheYoungIdea · 20/12/2022 20:59

Sorry you’re getting shitty responses OP, it’s all very well to talk about what they do in THEIR property but it shouldn’t impact on yours. I have the same problem and it’s disgusting.

That said smoking weed is as common as a drinking a glass of wine these days (difference being that generally doesn’t affect anyone else) and nobody seems to give a damn. I did call 101 and they logged it but - although sympathetic - said there wasn’t much they could do.

Just another example of people who don’t care about anyone else as long as they can do what they want 🙄
