Neighbours smoking marijuana in garden

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:22

We have new neighbours who appear to be very heavy marijuana users. They were outside smoking with umbrellas when it snowed and this is the third time they’ve been out today. I’ve had enough because the smell comes into our house even with the windows closed, principally my 7 year olds room and the kitchen. They also had a very loud party until 3 am at the weekend.

It is a normal residential street with mainly school age families and elderly people. The neighbour on the other side of them is in her 80s and has dementia. They must be working as the cost of housing is very high, but I’ve no idea how they can sustain a job given the amount of drugs?

I thought about popping over, but I’m nervous if it goes wrong they might be unpleasant. Would a community police officer come out to speak to them? I’ve never experienced something like this so grateful for advice on what to do.

Yeah what’s the harm in a wee puff before they drives to work and helps deliver a baby. Might as well have a drink too whilst she’s at it.

And to btw, stress isn’t restricted to the public sector.

Never said it was nor did I condone driving under the influence. Any influence. That's how my fiance died so wind your fucking neck in.
I suppose anyone who drinks is also a drink driver?

You could report to the HA if it is a HA property. If not just make notes of every instance and then this will have to be revealed upon selling the house. The only thing is you will most likely have to move to escape it as the police aren't interested as others have said.

Threads like this always bring out some real stupidity. Alcohol is far more dangerous than weed and far easier to overdo.

Yeah. I’m from a country where it’s legal and I wish the U.K. would smoke a bit of ganja instead of drinking themselves into oblivion. Weed smokers are chilled. They don’t start fights and last I checked smoking a joint outside isn’t anti-social behaviour. It’s the equivalent of having a beer in your garden.

I’d mention to them casually if you’re on friendly terms that you’d appreciate it if they smoked away from the house. Maybe bottom of garden? Light a candle, burn some incense, etc. But it’s definitely not a police matter.

wakeuptoday · 20/12/2022 21:42

OP I think you are absolutely within your rights to say something, it's intrusive and not fair for you to have to live with when you are not the one smoking it. I would do it in the day time, be really nice and cheery and go for the 'kill them with kindness' route rather than all guns blazing as in my experience it gets a better reception.

I would also mention the party noise, maybe remind them how thin the walls are and that the street is full of families and older people. Nobody should be having parties until 3am in a normal residential street, even if it is a 'one-off'. It is absolutely antisocial and selfish.

Druggie scumbags?

A young, working couple who smoke a bit of weed on their downtime are hardly scumbags.

It's ridiculously common these days. In fact, there was a thread on MN not so long ago where plenty of middle-class mummies were comparing their high.

And if the person who linked to the cookie shop on that thread is on this thread - thank you. You made Christmas shopping and my plans for NYE much easier this year Wink

Ponderingthemeaningoflife · 20/12/2022 21:45

Send your 7 year old out there to ask really loudly “what’s that smell?”. Make sure your answer is also loud - along the lines of “special kind of cigarettes darling” and a tinkly laugh.

Except drinking a beer doesn’t stink out the area for as long as the joint lasts - it’s an awful smell and permeates much more than tobacco smoke.

I disagree. Cigarette smoke is just as vile but because it’s ‘legal’ and quite frankly common place until a few years ago (I’m sure most of us remember coming back from a night out absolutely reeking a fag smoke) no one would complain that their neighbours are smoking outside.

OP would slam her windows shut if was fag smoke but wouldn’t think it deserves a thread. But because it’s marijuana, suddenly the neighbours are ‘drug scum’ and the police need to come out.

They are if the nuisance they cause means you can’t use your garden and stinks out your house or flat.

maybe some people on here just haven’t smelled it or had to put up with it day in day out, to be lying in bed with a window open at midnight and have to close it to keep it marginally less. Weed used to be noticable, but the last decade or so, it’s getting smellier and smellier, in line with the strength being increased.

tothesea · 20/12/2022 21:56

Anyone who thinks weed doesn’t have a detrimental effect on body and mind is naive at best.

Is that more or less than alcohol?

Or caffeine?

Greensleevevssnotnose · 20/12/2022 21:00

Yes if they were drinking beer in the garden and it was alcoholic and then got in a car absolutely I would. Probably not for a joint tho as I don't know the illegal limits or how strong it was.

Where has the gotten into a car bit come from?
Nothing to suggest that in the OP? (Unless I missed it)

Wronglane · 20/12/2022 22:00

Smoking 3 joints a day is hardly crazy stoned druggies who can’t hold down a job. I’d just go round and ask if they would be able to smoke further down the garden as it’s going into your daughters window. Don’t mention the weed. I mean smoking outside is hardly a crime against humanity

tothesea · 20/12/2022 22:00

They all have a detrimental effect to different degrees

Don’t do this

frampan6 · 20/12/2022 22:02

I'm afraid this sounds a tad entitled Op. it's just the smell of weed lingering in the air, it won't do you any harm. Id personally leave them to it and if needs be have a polite word. Getting the police involved is an over reacting and waste of their time.

Tuichi · 20/12/2022 22:04

@UneFoisAuChalet I can’t speak for the op, but I’d find it very upsetting if cigarette smoke was regularly coming into my house and being legal wouldn’t make it any better. Cigarette smoke is awful, but it’s a problem that is lessening as the years go by and it’s quite unusual to be forced to be around it now.

Weed is the complete opposite. It’s both more widely used and stronger smelling than previously. I lived in a house share with very heavy weed smokers as a student. The smell inside that house (where the usual evening activity for the other inhabitants was smoking all evening, if not all day) was was less pungent than the smells coming through the walls in my current house!

Wronglane · 20/12/2022 22:06

Send your 7 year old out there to ask really loudly “what’s that smell?”. Make sure your answer is also loud - along the lines of “special kind of cigarettes darling” and a tinkly laugh.

why? Just really why? And what the fuck is a tinkly laugh?

LBFseBrom · 20/12/2022 22:06

Mercibuckets: People can do what they like but not be antisocial. It can literally be smelt in my house with the windows closed. I’m not comfortable with my children playing in their garden.
.........
Keep your children in your garden, what are they doing at theirs anyway?

Don't worry about how your neighbours manage to work with 'so much drug taking'; I doubt they smoke it at work, it is usually for relaxing at home. Better than drinking alcohol!

There is no point in reporting this couple, the police won't bother about anyone having cannabis for their own use.

If the smell really bothers you that much you could suggest they smoke further down the garden. However they might have a moan about your kids invading their garden!

Chill out girl, there's nothing wrong with a bit of weed.

Goawayangryman · 20/12/2022 22:09

I'd give it a bit of time and see what kind of neighbours they actually are. They might be fine. Probably less likely to cause noisy mayhem and arguments than others to be honest, providing they are strictly consumers and don't dabble in other stuff or dealers round.

As such, it might be best to let sleeping dogs lie.

Although a pervasive smell, it won't have any detrimental effect on your kids. Just ignore it.

Please don't report to their employers. That is beyond the pale. Unless they work in law enforcement or something highly skilled like train driving or brain surgery.

LovelyRachel · 20/12/2022 22:11

I'd hate this OP. YANBU

It absolutely stinks!! We had the same issue once. Imagine drying the uniform outsidr in the summer and then the school question why your children smell of cannabis! It was hideous...

We reported them for drug driving and also to the letting agent as the property was strictly "no smoking".

If reporting to employer works - then do it! I didn't try that one...

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:38

Blimey! I thought that was the kind of thing community police were there for. Maybe I am just going to take my chances and ask them.

😂😂😂 this is really not the kind of thing community police are there for! It really is not a thing. It is no different than then smoking cigarettes.
