Neighbours smoking marijuana in garden

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:22

We have new neighbours who appear to be very heavy marijuana users. They were outside smoking with umbrellas when it snowed and this is the third time they’ve been out today. I’ve had enough because the smell comes into our house even with the windows closed, principally my 7 year olds room and the kitchen. They also had a very loud party until 3 am at the weekend.

It is a normal residential street with mainly school age families and elderly people. The neighbour on the other side of them is in her 80s and has dementia. They must be working as the cost of housing is very high, but I’ve no idea how they can sustain a job given the amount of drugs?

I thought about popping over, but I’m nervous if it goes wrong they might be unpleasant. Would a community police officer come out to speak to them? I’ve never experienced something like this so grateful for advice on what to do.

Sorry you’re dealing with this. Inflicting the smell of it on unwilling neighbours is antisocial and it’s a real shame it’s so prevalent now that if you don’t just put up with it you’re seen as the difficult one. There are cultures where the onus is on not behaving in a way that negatively impacts others, but here that’s reversed and the priority is doing what you want on your own property. People moan about the UK for all sorts of reasons on here, but this is my pet peeve.

On the practical front you have nothing to lose speaking to them and asking nicely at first so definitely start there. If that doesn’t work, think very carefully about involving the police or council as this leaves a trail of reports that would need to be disclosed on selling.

Incense masks the smell very well, I’ve found.

Please do not report them to their employer. This happened to my DP and he was fired on the spot even though he was a good worker. It was an incredibly nasty thing for someone to do. Would you do it if someone enjoyed a few beers?

Yes if they were drinking beer in the garden and it was alcoholic and then got in a car absolutely I would. Probably not for a joint tho as I don't know the illegal limits or how strong it was.

AllOfThemWitches · 20/12/2022 21:01

Would you be kicking off if they were smoking regular cigarettes? Because they smell disgusting too.

Companies have a zero tolerance for drugs, for lots of good reasons.

On construction sites, it was because people were dying as a results of others still being high from the night before.

In the police, it leaves you vulnerable to blackmail or corruption.

Mum presuming your DH knew his company policy on drugs?

Finally, Add in a vehicle and it’s a recipe for something going wrong.

Not as bad as drugs do these days with the super strong skany stuff. It’s vile.

AllOfThemWitches · 20/12/2022 21:03

Threads like this always bring out some real stupidity. Alcohol is far more dangerous than weed and far easier to overdo.

neverendinglauaundry · 20/12/2022 21:04

Calling the police on your neighbours for smoking in their own garden is incredibly OTT.
I don't understand how smoke is getting through your brick wall and closed window. Do you get other draughts coming though?
If you're really bothered by it knock on their door and say sorry to bother them but the smoke is coming in your window and can they move spots when they are smoking.

AlwaysLatte · 20/12/2022 21:05

Ugh, that sounds awful. I absolutely hate the smell of cigarettes or marijuana. First off I'd have a polite word with them, maybe they can go to the other side of the house.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 20/12/2022 21:06

No advice to give you I am sorry to say. My flat is joined to one occupied by 2 skunk smokers. I agree you can have all your windows and doors shut and it still gets in. It makes me feel sick. It is very similar to the smell of foxes but worse. They also sell it but I doubt if the police are bothered (they probably already know). They have also recently had a baby, which has not uttered a sound since it first came home - I suspect it is comatose. In your case, if they smoke it in their garden, I recommend you take up enthusiastically watering your garden with inaccurate aim on that side regardless of season.

Generally the really stinky stuff is very strong, vs an standard beer, which you can keep below the legal limit for driving.

brusselspout · 20/12/2022 21:09

Next time they're out there puffing away I'd suggest going to an upstairs window and leaning out, big smile on your face "hi guys!!! <wave> I'm sorry but is there any chance you could move a little further from the house? I'm getting second-hand-high up here! Hahaha!" Honestly, I think that would the best kind of approach

Treacletreacle · 20/12/2022 21:09

Totally feel your pain op. My new neighbour like to smoke weed standing outside his front door which seems to just come straight into my house. I woke up at 2.30 the other morning smelling it in my bedroom but my front room smells so strong when he does it he might as well come in and sit on my sofa and smoke it. I've gone out and told him I can smell it inside he still does it. They have a large garden out the back but he prefers to do it out the front. I hate the smell and it really annoys me the fact I have gone out to him already. I have 2 kids and I don't want them breathing it in.

AllOfThemWitches · 20/12/2022 21:09

And what exactly do you think happens when you smoke 'stinky' weed? That you behave in the same way as someone who is inebriated would?

Doesn’t stink my house out if someone is having a drink next door though.

I’m not really interested in my neighbours’ health choices and couldn’t care less what they’re up to as long as it’s between consenting adults and doesn’t impact me, but the moment it’s creating noise or smells or attracting crime I have a problem with it.

I don't think the working side of it had anything to do with it to be honest.

But I do understand about the smell of ot. It's awful. I'm stuck on the middle both my neighbours smoke it. The ones to right at least only do it in the evening . Seems to be after 9pm. So at least they are being considerate. The ones to my left smoke it several times a day. I hate it. What bugs me is they probably smoke it outside because they don't want it in their own house. But then it's getting into mine. ( in theirs as well bit they don't realise because thry are outside )

Anyway fact is there's nothing that you or I can do about it. Police won't come out for that sort of thing. Also in mycase I got to live next to them for a long time i don't want to cause bad feelings.

Fair enough, I doubt this thread would have been started over tobacco though.

you can’t walk past someone’s house and tell if they have just had a beer.

i suspect people who smoke it regularly don’t know how obvious it is to their neighbours or people who just walk past their house.

What happens when you smoke it? You get high and people who live around you have to put up with the smell of your vile habit. If you drink beer, you get drunk. After that anything can happen and that’s a different thread, loud music, DV, etc.

Report to police. They won’t do anything.
Reprot to police. They still won’t do anything.
Keep going - eventually the numbers will stack up and they won’t have any choice but to visit.

Make note of car reg. If they are smoking then driving. report that too.

Know who they are employed by - report their drug taking to them anonymously.

The stench from these drugs are vile. You can walk past a house with the windows closed and smell it. It’s vile, disgusting and people who think it’s only a bit of harmless, are wrong. It’s anti social, it’s illegal, it’s funding other crime and wrong doing.

Just have to do it all anonymously. Be careful not to get caught.

That reads like harassment

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 21:19

I think the friendly word is the way I’ll go (although I liked the idea of the hose!)

The thread is an eye opener though. I’d be pretty mortified if I was routinely causing someone a nuisance.

Reporting multiple instances of crimes isn’t harassment.

As far as the work element goes - depends on the role.

It is vindictive, but having experienced drug taking scum bags and dealers next door, it’s the only way to resolve.

Tuichi · 20/12/2022 21:24

It’s much rarer to have to deal with tobacco smoke though and for whatever reason it dissipates more quickly once the smoking has ended. I’ve got up in the morning to find certain rooms in my house stink of weed even though the neighbours will have finished smoking several hours ago because on my side the door and windows have been closed, trapping it inside. This has happened in different rooms and with different neighbours. I can only think of one neighbour who has bothered me with cigarettes and the annoyance only lasted while he was smoking.

I rarely notice cigarette smoke these days, whereas I smell weed all the time.

megletthesecond · 20/12/2022 21:27

Do not tell the police as you may need to declare it if you move. My grotty neighbours do it. It seeps in some days and we have to shut the trickle vents. The kids hate it.
I didn't get on with my neighbour before so I haven't said anything. I have now grown a small tree partly out of spite (and for the birds) as I know they hate their garden having shade.

HerReputationMadeItDifficultToProceed · 20/12/2022 21:28

We lived next door to a family where the parents loved to smoke weed on their patio under our bedroom window. Annoyed the arse off of me and I did make some enquiries via 111 about what could be done. The answer was absolutely nothing. We moved in the end.

OldTinHat · 20/12/2022 21:28

Lived with neighbours like this for years previously. Police do nothing.
