Neighbours smoking marijuana in garden

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 20:22

We have new neighbours who appear to be very heavy marijuana users. They were outside smoking with umbrellas when it snowed and this is the third time they’ve been out today. I’ve had enough because the smell comes into our house even with the windows closed, principally my 7 year olds room and the kitchen. They also had a very loud party until 3 am at the weekend.

It is a normal residential street with mainly school age families and elderly people. The neighbour on the other side of them is in her 80s and has dementia. They must be working as the cost of housing is very high, but I’ve no idea how they can sustain a job given the amount of drugs?

I thought about popping over, but I’m nervous if it goes wrong they might be unpleasant. Would a community police officer come out to speak to them? I’ve never experienced something like this so grateful for advice on what to do.

Stinking stuff!!! Lovely when it drifts into your garden whilst you are sat outside enjoying the sun!!!

whoareyouinviting · 20/12/2022 22:19

The smell of weed travels for some reason. I had a neighbour upstairs who used to smoke it and I could smell it around my new borns cot. That was distressing. The selfish psycho ignored requests to stop because she was an absolute loon.

As a result we moved into a new place and joy of joys a loser in the basement smoked weed which you could smell 2 stories up.

So people are just utter arseholes that don't care.

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 22:22

@LBFseBrom my children are playing in their own garden. Not going into my neighbours garden. Don’t be strange.

I love the smell of weed

Frequency · 20/12/2022 22:25

You can't get high from smelling weed so I'm not sure why your kids can't play outside?

SirenSays · 20/12/2022 22:25

The police wont care.
It won't be hard for your neighbours to work out who is reporting. They won't become better neighbours if you interfere with their work and lives and when they figure out if was you... it's just not worth it.
You catch more flies with honey.

maddy68 · 20/12/2022 22:26

Really not getting your issue. They are smoking in their own garden.

I am fairly certain that you will do irritating things to them completely unaware.

I would much have stoners in the street that drinkers whi argue and fall out.

Mind your own business

I see OP’s point quite clearly. I too have new neighbours who are stoners. They smoke from 8am until they go to bed.. it absolutely stinks. It’s not just a faint whiff off a spliff. It’s very potent smelling. We can’t have our windows / doors open as the smell comes through.. and it’s very strong. It’s made our washing smell.. so I can’t hang my washing out now as it just absorbs the smell..
they also have slanging matches / arguments in the evening so it’s not just the smoking.

Tara336 · 20/12/2022 22:34

I had a neighbour that smoked weed it bloody stank! On one occasion it was so strong i could smell it in the car park of our flats. They used to open their windows wide as obviously didn't want their home to stink but everyone around them had to.put up with it instead. I toyed with informing police but never bothered as I didn't think anything would be done. But it is so anti social. I used to come home and my flat would smell weird which I can only assume was the smell coming in through vents. Now they have moved its heaven I can sit in the garden, have doors and windows open and my home doesn't smell horrible.

Mercibuckets · 20/12/2022 22:37

There are threads with people claiming it’s antisocial for children to play on their trampolines too late or too early. People who think cats shouldn’t be allowed to roam.

But on a thread about people smoking there are a tonne of people who think it’s ok to make other peoples houses smell.

We had neighbours who smoked weed, the smell was so strong that in the morning my whole house used to smell of stale weed Every Thursday through to Sunday evening.
Thankfully they were tenants and after three months of the stench I called the letting agents, turned out it was supposed to be a single adult resident and no pets and this was a young couple, a 6 year old and a large dog.
They vacated around 7 weeks later and now we have a lovely family with young children and definitely no drugs!

shard5 · 20/12/2022 22:49

Oh and the police won't do anything. I did an online chat with the community police and they said unless they're selling or dealing from the house they wouldn't come out.

Morticiathegreat · 20/12/2022 22:50

I agree with you OP. My neighbour smokes weed - sometimes in the house, sometimes out the back - and the smell comes into our living room, even with the doors and windows shut.

It’s different to drinking because when he has a few beers it doesn’t impact me at all, but the smoking does impact me. I have asthma, as does my DD, and this really doesn’t help. I’ve bought an air purifier but it doesn’t make much difference, the weed smell is too strong. I hate that I can’t sit in my own living room and the kids hate the smell too.

I’m amazed at all the posters on here who think it’s absolutely fine to make your neighbours lives unpleasant. As long as you all get to do what you want, eh.

bottleofbeer · 20/12/2022 22:55

Is it giving you the munchies? Are you cained by proxy?

The police won't come out for this.

Jewel7 · 20/12/2022 23:00

It is annoying. We have neighbours that do this. I think it stinks. Always near our washing line. My kids are often outside playing when I can smell it. But I never said anything as it’s their garden. I don’t think they will stop. Neighbour did decide to moan about our dog so I moaned back about the weed. He didn’t have a response.

Wolfout · 20/12/2022 23:23

Whether or not it’s less harmful than alcohol - the fact is it’s still an illegal drug.

Always amazes me all the posters on MN who love to boast about no harm in a little spliff or a little bit of coke to take the edge off.
As long as it’s not their own darling children running county lines or being exploited in the cannabis farms.

Amybelle88 · 21/12/2022 00:01

Might not even be weed.

My husband smokes CBD - perfectly legal but smells like weed.

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/12/2022 00:07

Are you in the uk @Amybelle88 ?

earsup · 21/12/2022 00:09

It's not illegal to smoke it in own home so police not interested....you might have a word so they could sit somewhere else.....

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/12/2022 00:07

Are you in the uk @Amybelle88 ?

I am, yes.

For full transparency I am neither for or against 'proper' weed, I'm rather indifferent and think people should do what they want when it comes to having a joint.

I used illegal cannabis oil when I had cancer.

Totally understand the frustration of the smell for the neighbour but think it's ridiculous that people who have a joint are presumed to be scumbags who don't work or if they do work, all of their money goes on weed.

Madness.

Alcohol is a much worse drug of choice.

bottleofbeer · 21/12/2022 00:14

County lines gangs aren't selling weed as a main source of income.

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/12/2022 00:16

Thanks Amybelle. Does he just smoke cbd oil with tobacco or something? I've not heard of it being smokeable/vapable over here before (I'm probably well out of date with all this tbf)

Yes it is illegal to smoke cannabis in your own home - it is a Class B drug and it is illegal even to possess it.

Frequency · 21/12/2022 00:29

It is still illegal but most police forces don't actively pursue it. Many, including my own, have publically said they don't have the time or resources to go after individual users or small-scale growers.

They'll still go after large-scale farms but they have very little interest in Joe Bloggs and his small growing tent of 2-3 plants in his garage.

Legalizing it would go a long way to shutting down the large, unregulated farms.
