ReleaseTheDucks, I read everything you post however it's posted.
It's very good of you to keep us all up to date and I would choose the method that suits you best - broken into chunks or one long post.

Sorry to derail but thought this was worth mentioning. In todays Deep State Radio podcast David Rothkopf claims that he had a conversation with a senior US official who told him that when China have been training for war against Taiwan it has sometimes involved Russia and that a future attack on Taiwan may well be a "Russia-China venture".

Well China will be shitting their pants if they had hoped to rely on Russia to act as any sort of partner in that πŸ˜‚

The analysis in Sinca recently about why `no change in the Taiwan situation might be quite likely was interesting. They were analysing Xi's words, in particular about reunification by 2030, and basically said this shouldn't be seen as a commitment but rather as an excuse to kick the can down the road a bit further.

On another note Ukrainecast going down from 3 days a week to 2. Another sign of war fatigue?

In 2022, more than 130 incidents occurred in Russia, including 28 plane crashes.

The Russian aviation industry is in a bit of a state but without context or definitions that's more than a bit click baity TBH...

I could probably pick any large British airline and find more than 130 reportable "incidents" in just a month.

...and we see to much more info on what is being defined as a "plane crash"...

A lot of the reports of Things Going Wrong in Russia have a sort of gleeful overexaggeration.

Though it's clear there really are some Russian saboteurs working there, and there's mixed analyses on how well or badly the sanctions are going and the state of the Russian economy.

There have been a few military crashes recorded over the months though!

MagicFox · 11/01/2023 11:03

Yes and though he wants the capacity to do it it doesn't mean that he will. You're right that Russia has shown itself to not be the partner you'd want on side in a siege like that. But the increasing relationship between China and Russia and Iran does make me nervous

notimagain · 11/01/2023 11:15

Just to put some meat on the bones of the brief plane crashes discussion..

Having looked around the story seems to have been repeated in at least one of the more notorious UK tabloids.

Breathless comments about things like cracked windows, hydraulic failures and landing gear problems which are in reality fairly common worldwide on a daily basis.

As for the "plan crashes" - it looks like the reporters are including almost anything where an aircraft gets dented (e.g. ramp vehicle driven carelessly or aircraft slides of a taxiway in snow (happens)....or (sadly) somebody gets seriously injured around an aircraft - as happened in the US a few days back.

"28 plane crashes" is highly sensationalist to say the least.

I prefer chunks. My brain, when it sees a very long post, goes "oh you don't want to read that, you'll just tire yourself" but when its in chunks in separate posts my foolish brain is tricked into reading.

Chunks would make it easier to bookmark on the app though Wink - as for very long posts, you have to scroll down to find the bookmark facility Confused

Day 321, January 10th. Summary of #Arestovych and #Feygin daily broadcast
Posted on 11 January 2023

πŸ”₯Battlefield overview
Russia is concentrating efforts in the towns of Bahmut & Soledar, Donetsk region. Ukraine is defending its current positions, exhausting Russian forces and accumulating resources for the next counteroffensive.

πŸ”₯Soledar
Russia has put Soledar in semi-encirclement, trying to take the town. The Russian command has refocused its efforts on Soledar from the previous direct attacks on Bahmut as the defences of Soledar aren’t as strong as in Bahmut. The Russian troops are trying to take Bahmut for 8 months, costing them thousands & thousands of lives. The Russian troops are composed of Luhansk mobilized troops (1/3), regular Russian troops & VDV (1/3) and Wagner troops (1/3), including the Wagner-recruited prisoners that are used as cannon fodder & human shield. Russia will try to overemphasise the capture of this town, with Prigozhin & Denis Pushilin making propagandistic statements claiming that the whole town is already occupied by Russian forces.
Even if Russian troops take Soledar, making a big propaganda show about it, the occupation of the rest of the Donetsk region would mean taking another 20 towns the size of Bahmut. It’s highly doubtful that Russia would find enough new Wagner cannon fodder in Russian prisons to take another town in this manner.

πŸ”₯Bahmut, Avdiivka & Mariinka
Heavy fighting continues in Bahmut, Avdiivka & Bilogirivka. The Russian forces have limited advance in Mariinka but sustained heavy losses.
Bahmut is much better located and defended. Moreover, everything beyond Bahmut (like Kramatorsk) is higher than Soledar & Bahmut, which would make further advance even more difficult, slowing Russian troops down even more.

πŸ”₯Zaporizhzhja
Russian forces are regrouping with an additional 5 BTG of reinforcements arriving. This may be a preparation for an attack or Russia strengthening the defences, fearing a Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhja region.

πŸ”₯Kherson
Russia continues to shell Kherson residential areas. Ukraine responds by destroying Russian military installations in the Eastern bank of the Dnipro River.

πŸ”₯Kreminna & Svatove
Russia is trying to attack in the Yampil direction, to eventually attempt to attack Lyman. However, the Russian efforts are in vain. Especially considering the ongoing Ukrainian local counteroffensive efforts that stop & nullify Russian attempts to retake the initiative.

πŸ”₯Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities
Russia continues shelling and missile attacks on Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhja city and Dnipro. There is danger of another missile mass attack between 15-20th of January remains.

πŸ”₯Russian General Staff & infighting in Russia
General Lapin was reinstated as the Head of the Land Armies of Russia. After the loss of Lyman, Lapin was heavily criticized (by Kadyrov & Prigozhin) and removed from the Russian Army command.
This shows the infighting between the military faction and the warlords (Kadyrov/Prigozhin) factions, who are trying to gain more power. Moreover, Putin may be reinstating Lapin to avoid giving too much power to Prigozhin, balancing the power division between different factions inside Russia.
Prigozhin is attempting to show his capacity to make at least some advances in Bahmut area and increase his political weight, while Russia is incapable to take any cities. Prigozhin has no official political status and biography (9 years in prison, Jewish ancestors, etc.) which is unacceptable within FSB/Kremlin apparatus. This puts him in the crosshairs of the military, FSB & Kremlin apparatus, with Prigozhin’s survival depending on his usefulness for Kremlin, media presence and Putin’s whim.

πŸ”₯Baerbock in Ukraine
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited the city of Kharkiv, which is frequently shelled by Russia. The effects of Baebock’s visit will be visible during the next Ramstein meeting on the 20th of January.

πŸ”₯Heavy-armoured vehicles competition in the West
The American Bradley APC, French APC, German Marders and Czech modernised T72 tanks have already been pledged or being transferred to Ukraine. It seems that the West has decided to transfer APC & tanks to Ukraine to aid the liberation of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.

πŸ”₯Armenia
Anti-Russian & anti-Pashinyan (Armenia’s pro-Russian/pro-militaristic PM) sentiment are increasing in Armenia. Armenia is feeling betrayed by Russia and there is talk of getting rid of Russian β€œpeacekeepers” & Russia’s influence. Armenia may soon see the futility of subservience to Russia at the expense of Armenian lands, economy and strategic interests. Armenia may soon have a chance to leave Russia and start building more productive & mutually beneficial cooperation with its neighbours (Azerbaijan & Turkey).

πŸ”₯China & India
China has eased sanctions against Australian coal, signing a new contract with Australia after more than 2 years of an economical cold-war.
The US is conducting secret negotiations with China which is the only party that could help Putin. Now, there are signs that China is willing to β€œrestore relationships with the US”. China trying to normalise relationships with the West while ignoring cheap Russian oil & gas is an alarming development for Putin’s regime.
Moreover, India (one of the main buyers of Russian oil) is considering joining sanctions and a price cap on Russian oil.

πŸ”₯Russia’s economic prospects
Sanctions & price caps on Russian oil & gas are affecting the Russian economy, limiting Russia’s capacity to conduct war. The economic situation in Russia will worsen even further over time, especially if India joins the price cap measures.

πŸ”₯Saving Saakashvili
The worldwide campaign to demand medical care for Georgia’s ex-president Mikhail Saakashvili, who was poisoned while in Georgian prison, continues. So far there is no meaningful action from Georgian authorities to provide Saakashvili with adequate health care. Saakashvili has sent a letter to Feygin & Arestovych and the next steps of the campaign are already planned (which may involve something similar to Magnitsky Act) and the international pressure on Georgian authorities will not subside. Georgia should consider if they want to appease Russian imperialistic ambitions at the expense of its own prospects in NATO and the EU. #SaveMisha
Next stream is on Thursday, 12th of January.

And another line that cut a chat short: 'sorry, we've got rockets'.

Where one finds the resilience to stick this out I just don't know. For all the odd twists and turns, I live a fairly safe life.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 11/01/2023 15:59

I suppose one just goes on, day by day, hour by hour. But there has to be a price to pay sometime for living in such unsafety.

There is and I guess its significant and ongoing mental and physical trauma. PTSD is something that so much of the Ukrainian population will live with for years to come. Generational trauma too shouldn't be underestimated. Just consider the Holocaust survivors.

Yes. this is going to echo down a long time. A lot can be done with trauma if sufficient help is available, either healing it or support with living it which can ameliorate the effects, but frankly it won't be possible to provide the huge amount of support needed. :(

Igotjelly · 11/01/2023 16:36

Surovikin replaced as commander of the Special Military Operation by Valery Gerasimov. Wonder what that will mean for things.

Fabulous news! I also just saw a screenshot on Reddit that Downing Street has announced that they will send Challengers as well. I can't find confirmation elsewhere but it seems likely timed with the Polish announcement. The Russian reaction will be interesting, given that they've deployed thousands of tanks to Ukraine.

FYI, a NATO standard company is fourteen tanks - three platoons of four plus two command tanks.

notimagain · 11/01/2023 16:59

I can't find confirmation elsewhere but it seems likely timed with the Polish announcement.

From the Financial Times a few minutes ago, still an "if":

//"Downing St has confirmed for the first time that the British government is planning to provide tanks to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against the Russian invasion

A spokesperson for Number 10 told journalists that Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, has asked defence secretary Ben Wallace to β€œwork with partners” in the coming weeks to go β€œfurther and faster with our support for Ukraine including the provision of tanks.

If a deal is done to supply Ukraine with the British Army’s Challenger 2 tanks, it would be the first time a western country has provided Ukraine with modern heavy battle tanks. The move comes after Poland’s prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at the weekend he was β€œin negotiations aimed at creating a broader coalition of countries” to deliver western tanks to Kyiv."//

Lots of thoughts doing the rounds that all of this is a being done to nudge the Germans into starting supplying Leopard 2. It might help with German domestic politics if they are not seen to be the very first supplier of MBTs....

Gerasimov is a theoretician. Or was lauded as one.

>significant and ongoing mental and physical trauma.

A relative I chatted to today in Dnipro has taken in a student who was/is studying there [practical subject, seems to just do some online activity]. The student had been fairly resilient but has recently started to lose the will to do much at all. Parents are in what's left of a suburb of Mariupol.

My contacts have up days, down days and steady days, insofar as their conversations with me go. None have left Ukraine, but it does get discussed.
