In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 12:15

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

She's probably hoping for a replacement plus a refund for her trauma. I use to work in a supermarket cafe, some customers became aware that some managers would offer a £5 gift voucher as a way of getting rid of a customer who was kicking off. Unfortunately with some customers it meant they returned on a regular basis then looked for any small thing they could find that might earn them a voucher.

She'd have to have never been in a supermarket or any other food business apart from a very very narrow range to be unaware that most bacon in the UK is made from pork.

But clearly she was unaware of this, or she wouldn't have ordered the sandwich.

That's on her though and no one else.

I would think the people who do r realise what bacon is could pretty much be counted on one hand. And if you don't want to eat a certain food, then the onus is on you to make that happen, not order something that the vast majority of people will recognise as the meat from a pig then complain that is meat of a pig.

My 13 year old won't eat anything from a pig and he knows what that means.

I can pretty much guarantee that the staff will be in the back trying to keep a straight face, and this story will get retold often "remember that customer who complained their bacon sandwich was pug meat?" Followed by laughter.

Reminds me of my friend who used to work in Tesco - a customer came back to complain that their disposable bbq they bought for 1.99 didn't come with all the food on the picture of the lit bbq. Sometimes there are no words for the stupidity of people.

Flapjackquack · 15/11/2022 12:48

But there was bread around the bacon?

Bread is made from wheat, usually.

Black pudding contains oats, usually.

Oats and wheat are different things, obviously!

(I do not think the cafe woman has an allergy, fwiw)

Are you the woman in the cafe? 🐷

I'm pretty sure that the woman does rather enjoy her bacon, even if she doesn't eat 'pork'.

KittenKong · 15/11/2022 12:48

I have family living in the ME (born and bred) and trust me, they all know what’s in bacon, black pudding, pepperoni etc. even haggis (‘why would you ear that???)

Just because they don’t eat it, doesn’t make them ignorant of what foods comes from little piggies.

They are probably even more aware because gelatine sneaks it’s way into things

MavisChunch29 · 15/11/2022 12:51

Regardless of pork/not pork it's rubbish for the cafe to serve a chunk of whatever from someone else's breakfast on your plate.

If I was having avocado on toast, though I like tofu I wouldn't expect a blob of tofu scramble from someone else's breakfast to be plonked on my plate.

Do better.

carefulcalculator · 15/11/2022 12:52

I assume the woman means 'I don't eat pork except bacon' which is logical to her but embarrassing to say out loud.

badbaduncle · 15/11/2022 12:52

I run a business in an area with very few Muslims and we have a lot of Muslim clients from Huddersfield/Bradford. We have to repeatedly explicitly say that the bacon and sausage is pork and I have had many many people argue with me. One one occasion a man refused to believe me and bought his son a hot dog - I had no idea what to say or do!

KittenKong · 15/11/2022 12:53

Im almost impressed that she knew what black pudding is made from. Lots of people don’t (or don’t want to think about it).

fingcntbags · 15/11/2022 12:54

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:37

Because people have different cultural understandings of things. Should we really be sneering at people who come from different cultural backgrounds? If 'bacon' to this woman means turkey bacon or vegan bacon, there's probably a good reason for that.

Only on MN.

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 12:54

Oh god I just nearly choked on my scone.

The staff member seems a bit exasperated and just went "but it all comes from a pig my love!" and doesn't quite seem to know what to do next.

Woman looks like she wants to throw something. Her husband is either having silent hysterics or is crying. I think he's laughing on balance. Can see his shoulders shaking 🤣

ChaToilLeam · 15/11/2022 12:54

Does that mean there is a bacon sandwich going spare? I’ll have it! 🥓 And stick a slice of black pud in too, please. 😋

Theyorkshirelass · 15/11/2022 12:54

This reminds me of the time a gent ordered a chicken and bacon wrap at work but didn’t want the bacon for religious reasons-which is fine-I put it through, ran into the kitchen and made it myself so there was no confusion or any chance of bacon going near his food
10 minutes later he’s having a real go at me because it had chicken in it
we ended up refunding him as a chicken and bacon wrap with no chicken or bacon is,well,a wrap, lettuce and bbq sauce

manys the times I’ve been asked for a cheeseburger-plain
theyve then gone mental because it comes with cheese, and I then explain that they wanted a plain hamburger instead-but I’m the one in the wrong as I should have been able to read their minds

Or they order a black coffee-it’s my fault there’s no milk in it

my list could go on forever

True. I’m veggie so I tend to know where the sneak it in too!

My DH eats sausages but not other types of pork because he doesn’t like the texture/taste. But he would just pick out the black pudding and carry on.

I love that he held it together for so long but has finally cracked 😂

😂😂😂

Well if the cafe is serving dog, there really HAS been a cultural misunderstanding @tigger1001 - & I think we should all apologise to @AnApparitionQuipped for our lack of sensitivity about canine meat cuts.

Well, this thread is annoying me - everyone jumping on to sneer at some poor woman - if it isn't religious/cultural, she might have learning difficulties - or, shock horror - simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

There is nothing clever about knowing that bacon is pork product and comes from a pig.

If the thread is annoying you so much just step away, it's not compulsory to read or engage in it.

I'm annoyed on behalf of the woman you're all sneering at, and I want to stick up for her.

This is how bullying thrives - people are upset when they see it, but they do nothing - they step away, or they join in 'for a laugh' without thinking about what they're really doing.

I just think people should stop and think before sneering at a stranger in this way.

It would be completely different if you were laughing at your own silly mistake; or if the woman was being outrageously rude.

But she's made a perfectly legitimate complaint about her food being not what she ordered. For whatever reason, she doesn't know that bacon routinely comes from pork. That's nothing to sneer at.

Well, you had made the full ingredients of the hotdog clear with honesty so if he chose to ignore you, that’s his problem! However I believe there are beef hotdogs available so maybe he was expecting those.

Oh god a second staff member is coming, along with the bacon sandwich that started all of this.
