In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

She'd have to have never been in a supermarket or any other food business apart from a very very narrow range to be unaware that most bacon in the UK is made from pork.

But clearly she was unaware of this, or she wouldn't have ordered the sandwich.

girlmom21 · 15/11/2022 12:44

@AnApparitionQuipped leave the thread if it's upsetting you this much.

It's funny.

She has her husband with her who should be able to help guide her if she does genuinely have difficulties - but he'd probably have done that when she ordered the sandwich...

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 15/11/2022 12:27

I reckon it's the husband who's misled her on the origins of bacon in the first place.

😂😂😂

Piglighting bastard!

BronwenFrideswide · 15/11/2022 12:45

That's an impressive made up narrative you've got going on there @AnApparitionQuipped

georgarina · 15/11/2022 12:45

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:40

For goodness sake! She doesn't eat pork - probably for cultural/religious reasons - in her world 'bacon' is a non pork product - so that makes her 'stupid'?

My whole family is very religious and doesn't eat pork. If one of them walked into a random greasy spoon ordering bacon and expecting it not to contain pork...they would definitely be considered stupid.

Because people have different cultural understandings of things. Should we really be sneering at people who come from different cultural backgrounds? If 'bacon' to this woman means turkey bacon or vegan bacon, there's probably a good reason for that.

That's really interesting. I was having lunch in our canteen with some colleagues the other day and it was a bacon pasta bake or a vegetarian alternative and I was surprised that a coupld of the muslim guys took the bacon one as whenever it's pork on offer they take the alternative. I just assumed they weren't that strict. But maybe they don't realise it's also pork.

With cake?

MavisChunch29 · 15/11/2022 12:47

I wouldn't necessarily complain, and I love black pudding, but I would still think it's pretty shoddy of the cafe to be so careless in their presentation of food, even a greasy spoon should do better.

And a lot of people who like bacon don't like black pudding. Just because it's from the same animal doesn't mean you like all types of pork product.

Riapia · 15/11/2022 12:47

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 12:39

She's a middle aged white woman with a local accent. I don't think it's a case of a cultural mix up.

She may appear to be a middle aged white woman to the untrained eye.
But that may not be the way she identifies.

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:42

Well, this thread is annoying me - everyone jumping on to sneer at some poor woman - if it isn't religious/cultural, she might have learning difficulties - or, shock horror - simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

God how do MNers have the ability to ruin every single fucking thread by making po-faced accusations based on totally fictitious situations.

carefulcalculator · 15/11/2022 12:48

BarbaraofSeville · 15/11/2022 12:38

There's probably not a single person on the planet who is allergic to black pudding, but not bacon or the sort of bread that greasy spoons use, so I don't think we need to worry about cross contamination really.

The fact that we allow people this stupid to vote explains a lot.

Black pudding contains cereal, so people could be allergic to it and not allergic to bacon.

I do not think that is what is happening to the woman in the cafe, or they would have said that, but it is not stupid to know that black pudding contains more than just pork.

CopOut27 · 15/11/2022 12:42

Sorry but this is nonsense MN whataboutery. People from different cultures are not stupid and it’s universally understood bacon is a pig product which is why other ‘types’ of bacon have additional words v clearly in front of them. In your example “vegan” or “turkey”.

I have family living in the ME (born and bred) and trust me, they all know what’s in bacon, black pudding, pepperoni etc. even haggis (‘why would you ear that???)

Just because they don’t eat it, doesn’t make them ignorant of what foods comes from little piggies.

CopOut27 · 15/11/2022 12:49

@AnApparitionQuipped

Sometimes people get things wrong and it’s nothing to do with cultural difference or ageism or sexism or learning difficulties or mental health or disability.

Sometimes people have a little giggle at that because it’s funny and because all of us at some point have made a silly mistake too. There is enough to be serious about in life. If you’re so upset and can’t understand a lighthearted thread then leave it. We don’t need lecturing to.

Sorry should have said - the cereal is usually oats.

I have to say I love bacon but can't bear black pudding. Purely for psychological reasons. I know it basically tastes like sausages but someone once told me BP was like eating a pig's scab and I've never quite shaken off that image Confused

KittenKong · 15/11/2022 12:50

Eat not ear. No ears in haggis. I can’t speak for what’s in a sausage though (mum used to say ‘everything but the squeek’)

There is nothing clever about knowing that bacon is pork product and comes from a pig.

If the thread is annoying you so much just step away, it's not compulsory to read or engage in it.
