I just heard on the radio. Don't know what others think but I used to love their brightly coloured pyjamas.

OH! I have a birthday giftcard for them, was planning to buy myself some slippers.

LynneBenfield · 14/11/2022 08:11

I agree that the quality is very good but they have stuck rigidly to a style that is no longer popular to their detriment.

What happens with all the stock currently sat on the High Street?

TK MAXX

crossstitchingnana · 14/11/2022 08:12

I've had to Google Breton. 🤣

LakieLady · 14/11/2022 08:12

I think Sea Salt have been much better than Joules for a few years now. When I wanted a new all-weather dog-walking coat, the Sea Salt coat I bought was much better quality than the Joules one I'd had, and significantly cheaper.

I'm not surprised they're struggling, and I think Boden won't be far behind. Their stuff used to be good quality (I have a Boden jumper that is about 15 years old and still going strong) but I gave up on them a few years ago because it seemed really quite shoddy for the price.

My SIL loves Joules wellies, but has to get a new pair every year because they split. My Dunlops are ancient, and still going strong.

Their website is still selling stuff and has a good sale on atm. Is it too risky to order a coat?

Use a debit card and you should be protected with Chargeback. Section 75 of the CCA will apply if you use a credit card but only for individual items costing over £100.

Snugglemonkey · 14/11/2022 08:13

That is a shame. I have wellies, raincoats, outdoor wear from joules that is great quality and I have had for ages. Also love their kids clothes. I even have a few Breton tops. I will miss them.

crossstitchingnana · 14/11/2022 08:14

I had a pair of their wellies. Lasted three months so I thought the quality was rubbish.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/11/2022 08:02

I’d rather be frumpy and outdated in my joules, than wear fast fashion like Primark. Joules stuff lasts and lasts.

I succumbed last week to a Primark jumper which looked in store, the same as my M&S ones, and which had the same % of the same fabrics. But was £30 less.
Fuck me, never again. It is such a bizarre shape. So badly made. Like they had an approximation of what a female torso is shaped like, but only vaguely.

PriamFarrl · 14/11/2022 08:15

PAFMO · 14/11/2022 08:10

I'd love to see what the posters wear who accuse others of being frumpy and "must be 70 if she likes that".

The world would be very boring if we all wore the same things.

use583298 · 14/11/2022 08:15

I wouldn't be surprised if Next buys them like it did with Made and Laura Ashley, it sits well with the type of stuff they sell, they already sell Joules stuff anyway. They will probably do a similar deal to Made so unfortunately there would still be redundancies and no shops.

It will probably end up with most small brands being owned by Next and M&S and available only online

Dreamingcats · 14/11/2022 08:16

I bought one thing and the colours ran horribly. Never again. But I'm sad they're struggling.

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 14/11/2022 08:16

Overpriced flowery, stripey shite and expensive wellies that leak? Surely not! 🤷‍♀️

wallpower · 14/11/2022 08:17

it's not my usual style but I do like their raincoats as normally the only place I can find them.

Iamthewombat · 14/11/2022 08:17

UpsyDaisy77 · 14/11/2022 07:57

I’m also wondering if it is too risky to order something from them this morning? I have been wearing their boots and pj’s for years and would like to stock up if they will no longer be available. Wonder if next will buy them? They seem to buy all the companies going bust. If l bought with my credit card this morning anyone know if l would be protected?

It’s in administration, so is still trading. You’ll get your goods if you order online, but you should expect trouble with returns. The administrator secures the cash and bank accounts, because there will be a load of creditors expecting repayment, including customers. Usually the administrator sets a cut off date for customer refunds. You may not be on the right side of it. The reason Joules are in administration is most likely that they can’t service their loans and nobody will refinance them.

Your credit card provider might recompense you in these circumstances, but if you really want something you’re better off going to one of the shops, trying on and buying there. Then you’ll know that you like it and you won’t have any problems returning.

If Next buy Joules - which they might, there are enough people who want to dress as if they are part of some weird county set of floral Breton, welly and duffle coat lovers - they’ll acquire it via a pre-pack deal, which means that they leave the debts behind. Including amounts owed to customers and other creditors. They will probably close the shops. The old stock will probably end up in TK Maxx, for the floral welly lovers.

thelobsterquadrille · 14/11/2022 08:19

It's hardly surprising, the style hasn't changed the last decade.

Also, their wellies are horrendous quality.

AdoraBell · 14/11/2022 08:19

Just saw it on the news. I was waiting for them to get summer stock 🤦‍♀️ I feel sorry for all their staff.

PAFMO · 14/11/2022 08:19

I do agree about Boden.
15 or so years ago, I'd be one of the MNers setting my alarm for 6am the day the sale started.
I do still have some Hampshire trousers which are my go-to work trousers but the tops/shirts/dresses are very expensive for the quality. I think their children's arm must keep them going.

BretonBlue · 14/11/2022 08:20

Martin Lewis guide to administration. Read this before placing an order:

seperatedmum · 14/11/2022 08:21

well I like them; as part of my wardrobe not the whole thing I like my bright pink top and how it has velvet bits inside the collar yes I did buy it at an overpriced garden Centre and it shows no signs of wear, I like the little details on their stuff, I love the odd stripe, I've never been ' sexy' so toddler stuff/Mexican Carnival/frumpy doesn't bother me 🤷🏽‍♀️

lightisnotwhite · 14/11/2022 08:21

SnoopLabbyLab · 14/11/2022 07:44

Not surprising really. They massively devalued the brand when they went from decent quality country style supplier, selling stuff like field coats at country shows to purveyor of mass produced flowery viscose dresses and novelty Daschund sweaters. They were clearly struggling when they onboarded other brands ( dismal) to the online platform. Which I think backfired by making the website unusable. It’s like the Laura Ashley story over again.
It’s a shame really. Another example of the value of sticking to what you know and what works.

Agreed.

ShandaLear · 14/11/2022 08:21

It’s not surprising, sadly. They’re like Kath Kidson - great quality, but a bit of a one trick pony as far as fashion is concerned. I’m not fashionable at all and I have a few bits and pieces from them, but there’s a limit on how many flowery Breton tops and saddle bags I actually need.

EloiseBridgerton · 14/11/2022 08:22

Didn’t joules but Garden Trading!?

Hooverphobe · 14/11/2022 08:22

I’ve got loads of joules stuff - the kids stuff is excellent quality and I AM a frumpy country yokel. Shame - I’ve been scooping up their eBay bargains.

the “friends of joules” was fucking horrible though - like not on the high street.

twilightcafe · 14/11/2022 08:12

TK MAXX

Or/& Ebay.

A bit of a marker though isn't it. Joules sold quality fabrics and quite pricey, dare I say aimed at the more discerning, with money to spend.
A marker that the cost of living crisis is hitting everyone.
