Joules clothing has gone bust!

I just heard on the radio. Don't know what others think but I used to love their brightly coloured pyjamas.

OP posts:
TreacsPotNoodle · 14/11/2022 08:55

I'm surprised they've lasted this long!

Their clothes are so dated and overpriced.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 14/11/2022 08:55

Minor panic as I have an order in with them....
To my relief I have an email that says it's been dispatched, so that should be OK.
I also got an email at 9:30 last night with sale offerings, so there might be bargains to be had.

tartlets · 14/11/2022 08:57

That's my daily uniform of a joules top with Lucy and yak denim dungarees screwed- the tops always feel lovely and fit my shape well and I do love my one with little appliquéd dogs all over it. I happily dress like a toddler for comfort and because I do live on a working farm- their recent colour block range was good because I'm visible on the yard, I'm not into the flowery stuff but their coats and gilets have a decent shape to them which I'll miss. I feel for any staff today- I saw the fallout of the Laura Ashley collapse on the staff and it was brutal and unnecessary, if anyone on here is affected please look after yourselves.

I think it was just a matter of time! They haven't kept up. The prices seem to have gone up whilst the quality has gone down, I stopped buying a few years ago. It's a shame really, I used to be clad head to toe in Joules most days when they were more of an equestrian brand in their earlier days, I miss their polo shirts!

Deguster · 14/11/2022 08:58

They've been slashing prices for months - not sure whether they have actually gone yet, just teetering...

I never mind paying for decent fabric and it's rare as rocking horse shit in these polyester-y days. I notices Joules getting increasingly cut-price-looking in the fabric department so surmised all was not well.

I’m so sad. You’d all hate me. I wear striped floral Bretons all the time. Have the coats and wellies. I used to buy joules at country fairs and at the feed merchant. Still got my sweatshirts from 20 years ago, they are indestructible. It used to be much better quality I agree.

Great to know I look frumpy, old and dated!! I live in the countryside and everyone wears joules sweatshirts!

You and me both 😬😅
My mum says I dress 'granny chic'.
I love it and couldn't give 2💩 😂😂

IneedanewTV · 14/11/2022 08:59

I’m 57. I’ve never bought anything from there. Always looks frumpy.

Iamthewombat · 14/11/2022 09:00

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/11/2022 08:46

I wear joules, fatface and seasalt. I’m doomed to be frumpy apparently.

You keep going on about this. You’ve posted three or four times complaining that you must be frumpy because others don’t like Joules clothes. Get over it.

Tessabelle74 · 14/11/2022 09:00

If only they'd kept production in the UK! Shipping stuff off to China/India etc and dropping quality but bumping prices up is never going to work not to mention their stuff hasn't changed in 20 years, only so many people want floral rugby shirts

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2022 09:00

Why so aggressive?

I thought the same. Not sure why I’m getting singled out either.

Tessabelle74 · 14/11/2022 09:01

Oh and the millions they spent on the massive head office building near me was a daft idea in a pandemic

Not me that did any bitching. I'm just responding to yet another load of tiresome women-judging-other-women (whilst being ageist) for their choices comments. Yours were just nasty, the other poster threw the 70 year old comment in as well.

oakleaffy · 14/11/2022 09:02

Have a pair of pyjama bottoms with tiny horses on but they were £39 horrendous price!

FluffySocks0 · 14/11/2022 09:02

It's a shame because they do have some nice pieces like their waterproof jackets are really good and their wellies too, but I think they have failed to reach a wide audience with a lot of their clothing and it all seems a bit frumpy and dated to me.

UWhatNow · 14/11/2022 09:02

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/11/2022 08:44

Funny how they become coy when asked where they shop.

H&M
Asos
F&F at Tesco
Hobbs
John Lewis
La Redoute
Very
Religion
Monsoon
Mint Velvet

I’m fat and in my 50s - I don’t need Joules to add the third F - fat, 50, frumpy.

MetellaInHortoEst · 14/11/2022 09:02

brighterthanthemoon · 14/11/2022 08:47

People must be buying the weird stuff though or why are they making it?

I mostly buy their plain stuff but I bought two gorgeous “garish” skirts from them in the sales this morning which were about £25 each. (On sale plus 30% off code running). That’s good quality at a really low price, which I’m happier with since I won’t wear bold prints often. The wackier stuff does end up on sale more I think.

TheOGCCL · 14/11/2022 09:02

Joules have been in trouble for a while, pulled out of places like St Pancras station. For me the stuff is just quite cold, lots of pinks, white and bright blues, so not enough of a colour range and yes it can be quite distinctive which a) people get bored of and b) people might not want, as PP said it’s harder to mix and match. I also find the sizing comes up small which is odd for the target market. Definitely a shop of its time but I feel sorry for the staff and for anyone who is a fan of their clothing as clothes shopping is already hard enough these days. Also for the towns where they do have a shop.

BretonBlue · 14/11/2022 09:02

The article I’ve just read says that three subsidiaries in the Joules Group are affected but only names Garden Trading. Does anyone know what the others are?

ReallyITV · 14/11/2022 09:03

I have bought the socks for my kids because they last forever!! pJs Also the little dresses are lovely and such high quality. We also have Joules wellies!

I don’t wear their stuff but it’s great for little ones. We have a large two storey Joules store in our town in a prominent position too!

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 14/11/2022 09:03

I do feel sorry for all of the staff - it also feels very misogynistic. When a large steel plant/manufacturing place looks like it's going under, it's all over the news, government rescue packages a gogo, but when it's plain old retail, no one cares.

I do think that UK businesses are fairly crap at evolving, and making that transition to established, long lasting business. I wonder if Seasalt will find itself in the same place in 5-10 years? Or is it the curse of the start up - you need the founder to move on because they don't have the skills to run a mature business?

LadyHarmby · 14/11/2022 09:03

There is getting to be less and less choice around where to buy clothing

This. I still love a good shopping trip but the choice of shops is shrinking. So many people buying online but I can’t get on with it! You have to wait for it to arrive, it’s all individually wrapped in single-use plastic, such a faff sending it back if it’s wrong and now they’re starting to charge for returns as well.

wallpower · 14/11/2022 09:04

If only they'd kept production in the UK!

lol, do you know how expensive that is? People want good quality at cheap prices, it's not possible!!

pineapplepepperoni · 14/11/2022 09:04

I love the clothes for DS, he always has his wellies/coat from there BUT always bought in the sale (or sometimes second-hand from Vinted or eBay). You always know there will be sale round the corner so I just hold out until that and can’t afford the full prices anyway.

im 29 and find the women’s clothes too old for me.

Madcats · 14/11/2022 09:04

Maybe it is an age thing, but Joules seemed to lose it's way for me about 5 or 6 years ago. The quality seemed to drop and the prices went up. I wish they still did their slightly-shaoed polos that were so popular at country shows. The kids clothing used to be bomb-proof.

They have had so many "up to 70% off sales" that I used to just wait for one of those.

I feel sorry for the staff in our local shop, but I can't imagine that investors are rushing to snap them up in the middle of a recession.

Where am I going to buy my husbands socks and pants now!
