Joules clothing has gone bust!

I just heard on the radio. Don't know what others think but I used to love their brightly coloured pyjamas.

OP posts:
RewildingAmbridge · 14/11/2022 07:42

I've got a pair of slippers on the way! I do like their pyjamas and some things for DS but only ever buy in the sale. I've also got a pair of their roll up wellies which have lasted well and are lightweight. There is getting to be less and less choice around where to buy clothing

BreakfastOfWaffles · 14/11/2022 07:43

Oh that's sad, but then again I am probably part of the problem - I love the comfort blanket of their shops being there and having a browse, but I haven't actually bought anything there for ages.

NashvilleQueen · 14/11/2022 07:43

They've been sending so many discount emails recently I am not surprised. Sad for staff and the loss of another shop on the high street.

MyIgloo · 14/11/2022 07:43

I used to love their jeans were the only ones I could get to fit me right!

But they quality of the last couple of pairs have been shocking!

sad though as I liked some of their stuff & they normally did some decent kids clothes

SnoopLabbyLab · 14/11/2022 07:44

Not surprising really. They massively devalued the brand when they went from decent quality country style supplier, selling stuff like field coats at country shows to purveyor of mass produced flowery viscose dresses and novelty Daschund sweaters. They were clearly struggling when they onboarded other brands ( dismal) to the online platform. Which I think backfired by making the website unusable. It’s like the Laura Ashley story over again.
It’s a shame really. Another example of the value of sticking to what you know and what works.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/11/2022 07:51

I’m so sad. You’d all hate me. I wear striped floral Bretons all the time. Have the coats and wellies. I used to buy joules at country fairs and at the feed merchant. Still got my sweatshirts from 20 years ago, they are indestructible. It used to be much better quality I agree.

Great to know I look frumpy, old and dated!! I live in the countryside and everyone wears joules sweatshirts!

QuebecBagnet · 14/11/2022 07:52

Their website is still selling stuff and has a good sale on atm. Is it too risky to order a coat?

Felicitythecat · 14/11/2022 07:52

IMO it was overpriced for what it was.

reluctantbrit · 14/11/2022 07:52

Please not, I love their pull on trousers with the side zip, luckily just ordered two new ones.

The shop in our mall is closed but I wasn't surprised as lots of shops are empty.

AppleCrumbleRumble · 14/11/2022 07:54

Their clothes became too niche and outdated. Most adult women don't want to dress like toddlers.
I wonder when Boden will go bust. Their clothes are increasingly garish and expensive. They seem to think most women live in a Mexican Carnival.

DipmeinChoc · 14/11/2022 07:55

I love Joules for waterproof coats and wellies, although they are v pricy, I used the ebay outlet store.

User98866 · 14/11/2022 07:56

That’s sad. I’m not hugely surprised. I was actually in a joules yesterday for the1st time in forever (had to hang around waiting for someone and was the only shop nearby). There were a few nice boys items. But my overall impression was primark quality for 10x the price. But then a lot of these brands have lost their quality. Seasalt striped tops used to be nice thick cotton, so flimsy and thin now. And Boden kids clothes going downhill all the time. I do still purchase in the sale as I like their prints.

UpsyDaisy77 · 14/11/2022 07:57

I’m also wondering if it is too risky to order something from them this morning? I have been wearing their boots and pj’s for years and would like to stock up if they will no longer be available. Wonder if next will buy them? They seem to buy all the companies going bust. If l bought with my credit card this morning anyone know if l would be protected?

I look frumpy and outdated too. I don’t care.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 14/11/2022 08:00

I am also frumpy and outdated. Good old Mumsnet, cheering us all up and making us feel good about ourselves on a Monday morning.

Jexi · 14/11/2022 08:01

Doesn't really shock me. I think they've needed to update their products for a while. Expensive for what it is.

That being said I hope they manage to find an investor so thousands of people aren't out of a job. 😞

JinglingXmasbells · 14/11/2022 08:01

Not surprised. I've never bought a thing and always found them dowdy. All those awful flowery Bretons. I think they lost their way years ago. They started as a 'country look' ( similar to the very early Boden style 25 years ago) but then lost any real identity.

NextPrimeMinister · 14/11/2022 08:02

It's a shame, I've bought about 4/5 coats from them over the years for a variety of dog walking conditions and they are still going strong 10 years later. Maybe that was part of the problem, the early stuff was amazing quality in classic / practical designs that didn't need frequent replacement.

I remember my first maternity leave, dress like a toddler (pp) and loved the quality and comfort.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/11/2022 08:02

I’d rather be frumpy and outdated in my joules, than wear fast fashion like Primark. Joules stuff lasts and lasts.

Spanielsarepainless · 14/11/2022 08:07

I bought a sweatshirt twenty years ago and it's still going strong. I have a couple of tops bought in the eBay outlet store which are good quality, but I haven't bought anything for several years now.

PAFMO · 14/11/2022 08:07

That's a shame. The quality of the fabrics they use is second to none. And almost all of my leather tote work bags are from Joules. Had a lot of clothes for DD when she was little from there too.
I have stripy tops (no flowers or sequins) from Joules that are such fabulous thick cotton they are warm enough to wear even in winter, despite being billed as T shirts.
I think a lot of their clothes are quite similar to say, Fat Face, Boden etc but the quality has always been better. It's perhaps a combination of their stuff lasting so long you don't need to repurchase plus the Bodenesque bizarre colourways they sometimes throw in.

iknowwheretheothersockgoes · 14/11/2022 08:08

Sad I really like their stuff (and have an order pending, I wonder if the order will actually arrive....)

FizzyFucker · 14/11/2022 08:09

APurpleSquirrel · Today 07:33

It's not gone bust, they have brought in administrators. Most likely it will be bought up by another company.

Is everyone just glossing over the actual situation? They gone bust... well, not yet anyway.

DesignerRecliner · 14/11/2022 08:10

I'm really sad about this! I've had some lovely shirt dresses, some of the less in your face Breton tops, nice coats and scarves from Joules and the kids wear is lovely.

Very snobby and sneery to be calling women who wear Joules 'oversized toddlers', but hey, that's Mumsnet!

PAFMO · 14/11/2022 08:10

I'd love to see what the posters wear who accuse others of being frumpy and "must be 70 if she likes that".
