Joules clothing has gone bust!

I just heard on the radio. Don't know what others think but I used to love their brightly coloured pyjamas.

OP posts:
Roomytrouser · 15/11/2022 22:22

I got an email about their sale this evening and there isn’t anything that I could see in the website. I haven’t bought from there for years (I hate acrylic jumpers) but when the DCs were small I got some lovely things. My favourite ever dress for DD was a natty little maroon jersey number with one blue cuff and one yellow one - happy days…

I find Brandy Melville a good brand for wool and cotton stuff for DCs. They only do one size so I kid myself that that is the reason they aren’t massively expensive.

Roomytrouser · 15/11/2022 22:25

No message about trading issues on the website I mean

Watfordwoman · 16/11/2022 00:34

They alienated a lot of women by being prominent with their trans flag and ignoring their core audience

Ukrainebaby23 · 16/11/2022 06:47

Always reminded me of 90s Laura Ashley stuff, think they might have gone bust too.

Loobielougold · 16/11/2022 08:55

NEXT where selling their items for years and apparently they did look into absorbing Joules, but have walked away from it prior to the Administrators coming in.

fairisleknit · 16/11/2022 10:08

I placed an order on Monday, is it likely to arrive?? They've got some great bargains - is it too risky to still Order online?

That is the chance you take.

ExpatAl · 16/11/2022 11:27

Oh no! Love their girls clothing.

AppleCrumbleRumble · 14/11/2022 07:54

Their clothes became too niche and outdated. Most adult women don't want to dress like toddlers.
I wonder when Boden will go bust. Their clothes are increasingly garish and expensive. They seem to think most women live in a Mexican Carnival.

I agree about quite a bit of the stuff in Boden, but I still buy little gems from them. I just ordered these www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/faux-leather-straight-trousers-black/sty-r0198-blk

Lots of periods of 30% off recently, so you might be right about them struggling. Their stuff is way overpriced at pre-discount prices though. Maybe they are finally realising that.

ExpatAl · 16/11/2022 12:02

I buy less and less Boden these days. For the price there should be varied trouser lengths. Kids clothes no longer have adjustable waists etc etc.

NearlChristmas · 16/11/2022 12:20

It's so expensive so not for the majority of shoppers. People who previously might be able to throw money around are looking around for more value for money perhaps?

NearlChristmas · 16/11/2022 12:23

"Watfordwoman · Today 00:34

Yes I agree. When companies think they are being inclusive by listening to TRA etc they forget they often alienate a much larger group - women/female born as. Making EVERYTHING about trans women (from a male perspective) and forgetting women isn't going to go well long term.

Nobody is going to buy the company as it stands. It has run out of cash and can’t meet its obligations. Somebody will buy the brand, and the stock, and the shops will close. It’s what happens. The head office, if owned, will probably be converted to housing.

Re the regular sales thing damaging the brand: that’s all consumer-led. Our fault, in other words. The public have decided that clothes should be cheap, encouraged by Primark and supermarket fashion. And the dreaded Boohoo and Shein. You see threads on here all the time, moaning that a T shirt in M&S is ‘extortionate’ at £15 when Primark are selling them for £3.50. We’ve accelerated the race to the bottom. It’s been accelerated by so much disposable income being sucked into housing over the past 15 years: that’s why there are so few decent high street shops, but that’s another story.

Agree the market (i.e. us) is accelerating the globalisation of clothing, with massive over-production of cheap, synthetic, throwaway product from the East.

I am not sure it is a win for us, or the environment, but we cannot have it both ways. I paid more for my clothes when I graduated in the 80's than I do now, Back in the day, my mothers wardrobe was from British brands, made in the UK. It was expensive, 40 years ago a Pringle/Jaeger jumper or skirt would cost £50-60 (at least £200 today) but the quality was there. Importantly she would only have have 4 or 5 outfits, and supplement with an annual new season set or two which became the new best.

I STILL HAVE THESE JUMPERS and they are still in impeccable condition. I am not sure it would even be possible to source this quality now and I treasure them.

At the moment we have the dying throes of quality product so still have wool, silk and cotton in our wardrobes, often acquired at knockdown prices as businesses go bust. But in 5 years time these will be an inaccessible luxury for all but the super rich. By then the Shein -type of business model will actually start churning out slightly better quality 'premium' ranges out of China directly at prices any UK operation not relying on slave labour could provide. Hey, they may even improve worker conditions.

With the quality of 'trusted brands' already dropping in a vain attempt to compete, they will simply ceast to exist. Just look at all the ads on your facebook feeds.

The death of the UK high street, and thousands of retail jobs are a direct consequence.

Its less of a question of Joules being out of touch with fashion trends, more that "British" brands can no longer compete by relying on a brand name stuck on a product already made in the East.

Its so sad, because the future generations are inheriting the impacts of catastrophic over-production, industrialisation and over-consumption - food, energy, goods. And will hopefully, in response, demand 'less is more' high quality wardrobes of environmentally sustainable, ethical clothing. From trusted brands. Ironic. 🙄

Out choice to be part of the problem or the solution. I am certainly recycling my clothes, refreshing my wardrobe with quality vintage where necessary and not buying clothing 'bargains' I dont need. But I wish people werent flocking to Shein Boohoo and the like.

.

Roomytrouser · 16/11/2022 13:46

Are retailers less ethical overall than they used to be? It feels to me there’s more focus on it now. A lot of shops are using polyester saying it’s an “eco” fabric because it’s recycled.

Fast fashion is shit and I agree that has grown. There used to only be What Everyone Wants in my local town and when I was a student in the 90s I remember being unable to afford jumpers from Next because they were £30. I think I’d get change out of £30 now. The whole “ripped jumper from a charity shop and Army surplus DMs” doesn’t seem to be the student option any more (or rather it does but the shoes will be from Schuh and the jumper from Primark bought with rips in it). The whole “influencer haul” concept needs to die a rapid death.

Roomytrouser · 16/11/2022 13:46

The retail sector may well have grown though, off the back of fast fashion

AnnieSnap · 16/11/2022 15:32

@DobbyTheHouseElk did we get out of bed the wrong side today? Nothing wrong with a poster making the same point if different threads if it’s relevant 🙄

Roomytrouser · 16/11/2022 16:08

Just got another Joules email - dress for £26.95 anyone?

No idea where you got out of bed, but it wasn’t with me! Your post doesn’t make sense? Did you mean to mention me?

If they buy anything it will be the brand name only. They aren’t daft. Even the founder of Joules, whilst publicly boo-hooing over the fate of the staff, isn’t willing to put any of his own money in. I suspect that Joules have been close to breaching their covenants for years, and that their lenders have now pulled the plug.

karmalama · 16/11/2022 22:15

Madcats · 15/11/2022 21:28

Why did they stop selling polo shirts?!

If somebody can find me a tailored(ish) brand without lots of bling logos (and a bit cheaper than Musto sunblocks) I would be dead chuffed.

I think the administrators (have they been appointed?) will try to trade through until near Xmas because there ought to be lots of stock in warehouses or on its way. I'd use a credit card to buy, though.

Re using credit card to pay, better to use a debit card
I placed an order on Saturday , it was over £100 but lots of smaller items, on researching in a panic once administration was announced, I found that a credit card only protects for single items over £100, so I wasn't covered.
Luckily have had an email saying been dispatched

'Greenwashing'

Roomytrouser · 17/11/2022 10:41

Absolutely. Fine that for the time being this stuff might be kept from landfill but what about microplastic shedding?

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 19/11/2022 10:15

Even the POW doesn't wear Joules, which says a lot as she seems to like that aesthetic for both her and the DCs. She does wear Boden, which has likely helped them in the US. Sad for the staff, but the product was to a very particular taste, very expensive and the quality was not worth the high price. A lot of supermarkets are copying things very successfully at a much lower price, especially children's styles.

Damnautocorrect · 19/11/2022 10:38

@Madcats have you tried lands end?

Madcats · 19/11/2022 10:43

I'd forgotten that Lands End existed - that's exactly the sort of thing I was after (and they've a sale on)! Thanks @Damnautocorrect
