Has anyone actually ever won in premium bond draw?

I only have a small amount in there but I eagerly await the draw each month but it never happens!

My parents seem to get £25 amounts fairly regularly but they have a fair chunk invested. Talking to a friend about this recently (after interest rates went up) he said he used to have a few thousand in and would get that sort of amount fairly often. Although it’s random, mathematically, the more bonds you have, the more chance of winning each month.

Alice65 · 09/11/2022 12:12

Premium bonds pay out at 2.2% and the lowest prize is £25, so on average if you have £100 in bonds you'd expect to win once every 11 years or so.

Hugasauras · 09/11/2022 12:12

Yes regularly but we have a fair amount in there. If you only have a tiny amount then you'll go a long time between wins!

A few quid, twice. Both times were within 1-3 months of opening the account (one an adult and one on behalf of a child), which was something of a coincidence that makes me wonder.

TheWurst · 09/11/2022 12:14

No, I have had £2,500 in there for 5 years and never won. Funnily enough I saw a graph on Martins money tips that said with average luck I should have won about once a year with that amount. I am obviously not very lucky…

Hugasauras · 09/11/2022 12:14

Sorry baby posted! I was lucky last month and got £100 on a balance of £3500 and the previous month I got £100 so I am def over the odds. DH was unlucky and got nothing on £20k and DD got £25 on £17k.

witchesbubblebath · 09/11/2022 12:14

I win frequently but that's because I have thousands invested.
For some reason it also depends on how many people in your local area invest also. Don't know why but NS&I confirm this.

hallowedweens · 09/11/2022 12:14

I have £30k and have won about £250 in 2 years

Parrotpretty · 09/11/2022 12:16

My ds has about 35k in premium bonds gifted by an elderly relative. He has had them 3 months and won £250.

Georgeskitchen · 09/11/2022 12:17

I have maximum holding and win between 25 and 75 a month. Biggest win up to now £175 in multiples of 25 quid.

Still waiting for Agent Million to knock on my door 🤩🤩

snowballer · 09/11/2022 12:17

There is - I think - a 1 in 24,000 chance of winning a prize. So if you have over £24,000 you can be fairly confident of winning something every month. Under that the chances are obviously less. They have a good regular return if you have the full £50k but they're a bad "investment" for eg £5k.

boboshmobo · 09/11/2022 12:19

I have the maximum and get £50 fairly regularly

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 09/11/2022 12:21

I have about £100 in my PB, but nothing yet. I’ll probably add more soon, see what happens.

TheWurst · 09/11/2022 12:22

I’m completely wrong, not sure what graph I saw then.

Freddiefan · 09/11/2022 12:22

I have the maximum and normally get £25 a month. This month I got three prizes totally £175 and last month £125.

ditalini · 09/11/2022 12:23

I have £5000 and won £25 this month and last month - probably due to win zilch for the next year! Before that, I'd also won £25 twice about 6 months apart. I've had my bonds a couple of years.

As pp have said, it's all about the amount - literally a numbers game (obv!)

Mindymomo · 09/11/2022 12:23

We have the full holding and over the past year have received at least 5% back in prizes. My adult son has had £10,000 in there since June this year, he has won 3 x £25.

JubileeTrifle · 09/11/2022 12:26

We’ve won £900 in the last 6 months on 2 x full holdings. So it’s in line with what they said yesterday.

FawnFrenchieMum · 09/11/2022 12:28

There are lots of premium bond facebook groups where people post their winnings each month. One lady won the £100K last month.

My FIL won £10k in his second ever draw, he usually wins £50-£200 a month but has 2 x max holdings of £50k.

We have had between £15-£20k invested over the last 18 months and have won £25-£50 most months, last month £125 (our biggest prize so far), Sept £50, this month nothing.

FlamingBells · 09/11/2022 12:29

£25%

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 09/11/2022 12:32

I have £1500 in premium bonds and I think I’ve won £25 about once every 18 months on average. Which is a better return than I’d have got on the Sam win a savings account for most of the last few years.

Same here. When I came into some money about 20 years ago I was advised by someone in my Building Society to buy Premium Bonds. I had each win paid back into more bonds and now have the maximum so I win at least £25 a month. It's like a raffle the more tickets you have the more likely you are to win. Still waiting for anything larger than £150 though.

Same here. DH and I hold maximum amounts and "compete" each month about who wins the most. I've done better than him this year. Win something most months and hate it when we don't 😜. The best month we've had was 10+ years ago when we had far fewer bonds, but won a £1000 prize.

Predictable phrase from DH every last day of the month "Wonder if we'll be millionaires tomorrow" and I check outside before I go to work in case someone waiting to knock on the door ☺️

MightyAtlantic · 09/11/2022 12:38

Yep, I won £100 this month and have won £25 several times over the last three years since I've had the bonds.

mamabear715 · 09/11/2022 12:39

My Daddy bought one for me when I was born. Mid sixties now & still waiting!
(And, yes, I have checked, and notify them of changes of address!)
