Has anyone actually ever won in premium bond draw?

I only have a small amount in there but I eagerly await the draw each month but it never happens!

I was given one as a baby. My parents mentioned it from time to time jokingly. As an adult I asked if I could have it. They said they didn't know where it was and I wouldn't have won anything anyway.

Subsequently they moved house, mentioned it has turned up during the move (still didn't bother giving it to me so I could register and check if I was an unknowingly a millionaire), mislaid it again as it was so worthless anyway BUT STILL invested some spare cash from the money in premium bonds, as they had heard it was the best way to invest it at the time.

I get that their investment was much larger than mine, but it was a few months and mine was over my entire life. They did give it to me eventually. I haven't won anything. Still rankles though.

I won a premium bond in a competition in 1985. I can’t remember the amount probably about £10. A couple of years ago I won £25.
I have a relative that had about £30k in bonds. She usually got about 2x £25 wins a month.

We checked my nannas's 60 year old bond a couple of years ago...not ONE win!

DH and I both had max amounts in for a few months and won on each of those months anywhere from £50 each to biggest was probably about £300 between us. Since moving all but £1K DH has won nothing, I still have £12k and win £25 at least every other month so I would say the graph posted upthread seems fairly accurate.

RaininSummer · 09/11/2022 13:00

Several times a year. This only started when i increased my holdings though

BashfulClam · 09/11/2022 13:00

DH wins £25 quite regularly. More than he’d get if it was in the bank.

euff · 09/11/2022 13:06

I had a client with full holdings, she's seemed to win £25 every month! My DC have each had 4k for less than a year. One has won nothing and the other has won £100 in total.

Snugglemonkey · 09/11/2022 13:08

My son got some as a gift from his granny when he was born. He wins a few times a year. Not huge amounts, I think the most has been around £100, but it is very exciting for him.

BrutusMcDogface · 09/11/2022 13:10

My child won £1k!! Seems they were very lucky 😁

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 09/11/2022 13:11

We won £200 last month and £75 this month.

NerrSnerr · 09/11/2022 13:13

We have almost £2000 in premium bonds. We won £100 recently and had a couple of £25s over the last few years.

Dreamingcats · 09/11/2022 13:17

I had about £20k in there for a while. I won at least £25 maybe every other month. However, the probability of winning was then changed and I didn't win anything for seven months. Got annoyed and withdrew all the money.

Currently husband and I both have the max invested. This month he still only won £25 and I won nothing. Tbh now interest rates are rising we could easily beat the returns we're getting by putting it in a savings account. But we need the money in January so it's better to keep it easily accessible and have a small chance for a big win!

Spck · 09/11/2022 13:18

I believe you still get the knock on the door if you have won the million - but have often wondered what they do if you are out or on holiday. Do they ring first to see if you are at home?

FairlyIncognito · 09/11/2022 13:18

I have built mine up over the years and definitely getting more prizes - £25 this month and last month

Dallimore · 09/11/2022 13:18

Looking at this, most of the big winners already have a lot of bonds

Dallimore · 09/11/2022 13:19

Martin Lewis was talking about this on his show last night, and was saying that unless you have maxed out your tax free savings allowance, you're better off putting it in savings as it gives a better return than the chances of winning

LBFseBrom · 09/11/2022 13:21

Yes, £25 when I was sixteen.

Bumply · 09/11/2022 13:24

I've got about £15k and usually get £200 per year in £25 prizes.
Highest prize I've ever won in 20-30 years was £1000. Everything else has been £25

TenoringBehind · 09/11/2022 13:26

I win every month. Anything from £25 to £150.
same for my children too.

MrsR87 · 09/11/2022 13:28

I’ve had £100 worth since I was born (35 years) and have had £6000 in there for over a year and never won anything. I must be unlucky.

My DH had about £8000 in his and has for four or five years and wins £25 every couple of months.

burnoutbabe · 09/11/2022 13:28

snowballer · 09/11/2022 12:17

There is - I think - a 1 in 24,000 chance of winning a prize. So if you have over £24,000 you can be fairly confident of winning something every month. Under that the chances are obviously less. They have a good regular return if you have the full £50k but they're a bad "investment" for eg £5k.

Yep i have the full £50,000 and usually win 2 things a month. Last month it was one but £75.

ArabeI · 09/11/2022 13:31

The occasional £25.00. I'm far from having maximum holdings, though.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2022 13:46

My DCs have premium Bonds - £200 each. In 18 years one of them has had a win of £25. Total waste of money.

I think you may have been getting our share... 🤔😉

orbitalcrisis · 09/11/2022 13:47

I have £3k in premium bonds, I average £25/year!
