Why won't they remove the Whip from Mone? It makes no sense.

ancientgran · 06/12/2022 19:42

Maybe they are scared when she goes "incandescent" at them.

Blossomtoes · 06/12/2022 19:58

Does anyone know how the Whip works in the Lords? I’m woefully ignorant about it.

DuncinToffee · 06/12/2022 20:17

I don't know either, it looks to me that there is no such thing as removing the whip from a peer.

Absence of Leave sounds a bit wishy-washy as well.

I mean Leave of Absence

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 06/12/2022 20:49

Peers are whipped (🙄 sounds ridiculous doesn't it!) so I'd think it likely that parties are free to remove/suspend the Whip for an individual peer if they want to. The peer would just sit as an independent.

I'm surprised that it's not automatically suspended when the Peer/MP is under investigation for fraud.

DuncinToffee · 06/12/2022 20:57

Guess it's down to Sunak then?

Is it possible to have a leave of abscence from something that one very rarely turns up to anyway?
Would anyone notice the difference?

EXCL: Tory peer Michelle Mone lobbied ministers in an attempt to secure government Covid contracts for a second company that was a secret entity of her husband’s family office - by the @guardian's incredible investigations team

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/dec/06/revealed-second-firm-pushed-by-michelle-mone-was-secret-entity-of-husbands-office

I have to say that was quicker than I expected.

Kleptocracy anyone?

DowningStreetParty · 07/12/2022 07:24

Yet again the Tories seem unable to deal with corruption in their party. We must not tolerate corruption in Parliament coming from ANY party. It seems unbelievably dodgy what’s happened with Mone . In the news coverage of her stepping back’ Hmm it said the step back meant she wouldn’t have to declare any more changes of income or something like that. Depressingly I wonder if it could be more about avoiding scrutiny of more money coming in or of where the current money is being squirrelled away to?

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2022 08:38

Steve Barclay is having a hard time defending it, waffles on about procedures in place.

Lisa Nandy just said they wouldn't have made her a peer in the first place.

I think she's stepping back to avoid being censured. No doubt they thought it would mean the story would fade as a result. I dont think there is much chance of that.

The HoL does seem to have become just a means to reward donors. A trophy to bestow. I am sure that has been going on years but it's speeded up.As I understand the committee reviewing applications is pretty toothless.

At the very least seats should be removed for non engagement in debates and votes. It's ridiculous that they can receive the honour of being given an opportunity to represent the country and they cant be bothered to take it up. Nothing obliges them to accept a peerage.

Any word on whether Dorries or Mogg will be able to delay taking up their places in the HoL?

Mone is just the tip of the iceberg.
Bylinetimes and the Good Law Project have been reporting on other cases for a while now.

I find it odd that Mone is going full on defending herself against the lies. The Guardian would not have printed what they did without extensive investigation and being sure of their facts. It was a case of 'follow the money'. They did. Offshore accounts connected to her husband.

It just seems very black and white to me, how can she defend it. She should never ever have been in the HoL in the first place, if only for the crime of selling fake diamonds on QVC!

They won't touch her with a bargepole now!

She wants to 'clear her name'. How on earth can that happen when it has been proven that both PPE Medpro and LFI Diagnostics were set up for the ultimate benefit of Barrowman (her husband) and his family, i.e. her and her kids and the channelling of £29M of PPE profits went to her.

It really is extraordinary.

DowningStreetParty · 07/12/2022 11:21

I am so disappointed that Kier Starmer thinks we should disband the HoL and instead have regional representatives- how will that be any safer from corruption? He should draw together all the Tory corruption instances we’ve had and have a clean up Parliamentary politics policy otherwise people will just get more cynical and disenfranchised about there being any political solution to our problems nationally and globally. This shouldn’t be how it is. I’m fairly sure it’s not how it used to be..

Blossomtoes · 07/12/2022 11:47

how will that be any safer from corruption?

At least if we elect members of the second house we’ll have nobody but ourselves to blame if they turn out to be wrong ‘uns. And membership wouldn’t be based on the generosity of rich donors. I personally find it an absolute disgrace that people can essentially buy power if they’re wealthy enough.

Why would anyone think it was acceptable to make £29million pounds profit from the taxpayer in a time of national crisis?

And yet we had the spectacle of the Health Secretary this morning saying he values nurses very highly, but refusing to engage with their representatives about how much nurses are paid.

It stinks.

I very loosely know someone who made a lot, lot more than that. But they were actually running a PPE company long before covid. Just on an very, very much smaller scale.

Spineless, weak

The Prime Minister and his party have not stripped the whip from Baroness Mone, his press secretary reveals. Mone automatically lost it by taking a leave of absence.

Rishi Sunak, who said in #pmqs he was "shocked" by the revelations, has not taken any action against her.

No 10 also not denying that Baroness Mone could get the whip back whenever she decides to end her leave of absence.

Is it Sunak's aim to play into the Labour party's narrative that he is weak and 2nd choice?
