Why does my steak look like this?

Rump, grilled as I always do my steaks.

I usually have sirloin but they were out so got rump instead.

It looks extremely 'wrinkly' to me.

Is this standard for rump?

Cooked v well done. Basically dried out, cooked too long, too low a temp.

isthismylifenow · 24/10/2022 20:46

That looks like a rump glove 🤭

It's dry, to me rump is best cooked in a skillet with fat that you can use to baste it.

And I sometimes do a sauce with rump, as I don't find it the most flavourful cuts.

OMG it looks like a gorilla's hand.

Do you shop in Royston Vasey? Confused

isthismylifenow · 24/10/2022 20:50

When you say grill, do you mean in the oven with just the top grill on? Or as in grill, like BBQ style?

(I have never grilled a steak in the oven, so a genuine question)

Ilikemyteastrong · 24/10/2022 20:50

Agh. £6 down the drain.

I used to pan fry but found the outside would go super dry and harden too quickly whereas the inside wouldn't get cooked properly. I switched to grilling and they always came out perfect (to my liking) until I swapped my usual sirloin for rump and this is the result..

Why did you cut it like Freddie Krueger's glove?

The grill in the oven, as above I've been doing this for 6 months or so and it never comes out looking like this 😂

It's a rushed version of this simply cook recipe.

I’d rather eat an actual rump.

AlwaysLatte · 24/10/2022 20:53

It looks over cooked? I usually heat a griddle pan with a spray of oil, pretty hot, then cook seasoned fillet steaks (having been out of the fridge for an hour) for a max of one minute per side, then rest on covered hot plates while I prepare the vegetables, they are always very tender that way.

I’m sorry and I know it’s not funny so shouldn’t be laughing, but you didn’t cut it like that, that’s slices. You cut it like a hand 😂

Lagattolove · 24/10/2022 20:54

Looks like it’s been to Benidorm

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/10/2022 20:54

Rump is best done medium rare or it does get dry. Very hot pan, a bit of oil, sear for about 3-4 minutes each side then rest for the same amount of time as cooking

ShandaLear · 24/10/2022 20:54

I know it’s an actual rump. I mean when it’s still on the cow.

Well, you tried OP 🤭

ShowOfHands · 24/10/2022 20:55

Arguably, don't bother with any cut of steak if you're going to have it well done, have a pork chop. Cheaper and it won't be thoroughly ruined

Fuck me, I hate this attitude. People should eat food to somebody else's specifications even if they don't like it cooked that way, just to satisfy some sense of their own righteousness. DH used to say similar when I had steak medium/well done. He soon stopped when I pointed out that he sounded like an officious prick.

Summerfun54321 · 24/10/2022 21:09

I’ve definitely ruined steak like that before. Never gone the extra mile and turned it into a gorilla’s hand though. That’s next level.

muchprefersummer · 24/10/2022 21:09

I am proper miserable tonight but I'm sorry OP - you e proper made me smile looking at that cooked hand!!
It's overcooked for rump and hasn't been rested long enough. Stick some peppercorn sauce on it - it'll be chewy but ok!

idonotmind · 24/10/2022 21:10

Da fuck

I’m with you there ShowOfHands.

onmywayamarillo · 24/10/2022 21:15

That's not a good rump steak more like brisket end.. which is ropey and needs a long slow cook.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

honestly op it’s partly the slicing, why didn’t you properly slice it, the hand carving activity is making it look way worse..

it is very funny though.
