Im listening to Emily Thornberry on LBC. I might have misherd but I thought I heard her say we are processing just over half the asylum applications that we were 12 years ago. 26,000 initial decisions reached in 2010. 14,000 reached now.
We are going backwards.

Yvette cooper stayed similar facts on R4 this morning.

She said it's taking 3-4 years for some claims to go through.

I'm erring in the side of believing it deliberate as a deterrent as a punishment for the Rwanda plan failing.

But it's not stopping the traffickers. Nothing will stop them with regards what happens to those crossing. They just want their money. They couldn't give a toss if they die on the way over - cramped conditions or being sent to Rwanda aren't going to have a bigger effect.

The racists will just love the fact that a brown person agrees with them. I suspect Braverman knows this and is courting their vote anyway. How cynical and dangerous.

I apologize my point is offensive, but it seems valid.

I agree.

I've said for many years she forgets her own parents were immigrants and she benefited from our education system etc because of that.

She rides herself in her intelligence (I've yet to see it!) and her education etc.

Yet she wants to deny others the same right when they are fleeing persecution. I don't think her family came for that reason from what I've heard?

You heard right

Here's a chart for those who say the asylum backlog is due to the large number of asylum claims. Figures include dependents.

Yes Braverman is a wondrous thing to her best pal and leak receiver Sir John Hayes isn't she? The optics of him standing up and saying he has a dream of seeing photos of a asylum seeker filled plane taking off for Rwanda and it being an obsession is quite a different thing.

DowningStreetParty · 31/10/2022 18:43

She is Trumpian. How dare she use that disgusting word ‘invasion’ ? These are human beings she is talking about.
As for purposely whipping up hostility in the day after a place in Dover holding asylum seekers was attacked with fire…words fail me.
The problem is the under resourced processing of the applications in the UK. Braverman’s responsibility.

It's not far off nazi propaganda.

tobee · 31/10/2022 20:42

Notonthestairs · 31/10/2022 18:25

I can't help but think this is all playing in to Braverman's hands. She's whipping the ERG headbangers. They love her. They love the idea of the threat of invasion. They want to play hero saviours of right thinking English people. She's making her own power base quite clear.

Yes she likes winding up the left as we know.

It's not winding up the left that's the worry. It's that that she thinks that's enough of a motivation.

How can this woman have been elected am MP? And promoted so far? A very useful tool to the far right!

Notonthestairs · 31/10/2022 20:54

It's not simply about winding up tofu eaters. It's about creating distracting headlines for tomorrow.

The focus will be on her deliberately incendiary language NOT on her failure to follow her own legal advice (breach of ministerial code) the numbers in Manston, the conditions and the illegal detention of asylum seekers beyond 24 hours (breach of legislation).

It serves as distraction from the mess of her multiple security failures (well those that we know about).

She's baiting people to deflect from her epic failures.

Notonthestairs · 31/10/2022 21:14

Bluntly ,the immigration numbers have grown bigger since Brexit not smaller. The reason is not “ marauding criminal gangs “ ( more than 80% whose cases are heard are ultimately granted asylum) but a break down in relations with France and others ..

And yes, the backlog too. If we spent more money on speeding up the asylum process there would ironically be far less pressure on the system.

L1ttledrummergirl · 31/10/2022 22:18

What would happen if one or more of the asylum seekers requested a judicial review of the situation they are in and how it's breached their humans rights?
Could Braverman or Sunak be held accountable and what would be the consequences to them?

BewareTheLibrarians · 31/10/2022 22:25

@L1ttledrummergirl I think there was a post about it yesterday, I’ll see if I can find it, but the outcome was not great for Braverman iirc.

On the topic of asylum seekers -
"This weekend, ministers, civil servants and political advisers have claimed that, before her resignation, Braverman was told by government lawyers that she had broken the law by failing to release detainees from an asylum processing centre in Kent. Braverman is understood to have demanded a second legal opinion rather than act quickly enough to end the problem — itself a potential breach of the ministerial code. One senior government source suggested those detained could take out a class- action lawsuit and that all would be likely to be granted asylum by the courts — the exact opposite of what the home secretary seemed to wish for."

Outside of the ERG Braverman is considered as unfit for office. Large swathes of Home office & ministry of justice (Raab) are looking for new jobs apparently.

Here it is @L1ttledrummergirl If that source is accurate, that’s going to be a hard one for her to explain away.

Agree with anyone saying Braverman is unfit for office both on her woeful actual record of dealing with problems and with her irresponsible dangerous rhetoric.

Suella Braverman accused of inflammatory language over 'invasion' comment
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63466532

‘In a Tweet, Ms Cooper said: "No home secretary who was serious about public safety or national security would use highly inflammatory language on the day after a dangerous petrol bomb attack on a Dover initial processing centre."

Some 4,000 people are being held at the Manston processing centre, which is only designed to accommodate 1,600 people on a temporary basis.

Hundreds of people were moved there on Sunday after a man threw firebombs at a separate immigration centre in Dover. He was later found dead nearby.’

Just putting this link here for the record.

Absolutely shameful. I am very glad Yvette Cooper has picked up on it while agreeing there’s other things too to criticise Braverman for apart from her use of language. But inflammatory language, plus a misleading representation of the causes of a bad situation are a potent and dangerous combination, as we have seen time and time again throughout history so it’s right to criticise it.

My fear is people numbers and administrative and practical chaos are being ramped up deliberately both to demonise displaced asylum seekers and therefore get consensus for increasingly extreme and unwarranted methods of deterring and (illegally) punishing them but also to cover up on the breakdown of the UK’s relationships with EU countries (caused by Brexit) plus it will be used as another justification to get rid of the Human Rights Act. Which is so unbelievably threatening to ALL of us because it’s taking away legal protections for EVERYONE. But that’s what Tories want. Let that sink in. Less legal protections for all of us.

Sunak needs to sack Braverman and get someone credible in very quickly. He hasn’t got a secure government and surely out of good old Tory party self interest, he can’t afford this. She’s become the story.

Notonthestairs · 01/11/2022 08:19

"Roger Gale tells @TimesRadio that “very high-level information” from the Home Office has revealed that alternative accommodation was used by Priti Patel, Grant Shapps, but not Suella Braverman. “I do not accept or trust this Home Secretary’s word”.

twitter.com/stigabell/status/1587352566450487296?s=46&t=sqwOiXlJMZQPRTOz2eJB4Q

Roger Gale (Conservative) does not accept or trust Braverman.

Notonthestairs · 01/11/2022 08:21

It seems Braverman would only book hotels in Labour constituencies. I don't that is on the criteria when you work out where to move asylum seekers.

Budget update. Some serious expectation management from government tonight about Nov 17 fiscal event.

Warnings over how Hunt/ Sunak could fill £35bn/ £50bn black hole include 50% from public spending cuts & 50% from tax rises on all income groups.

So sickening. They could have been borrowing to invest in reliable energy production, infrastructure and better public services when our credit rating was at the highest possible level and it was cheaper to borrow.

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/11/2022 08:58

I was looking to see how the staffing level has changed down the years in immigration and border control.
I found information for the last 2 years but not going further back. Can anyone find these as it would be interesting to see how well that's kept up with the increase in asylum seekers?

Blossomtoes · 01/11/2022 09:45

And yet there’s an obvious source of money to help full that fiscal hole.

Really? Does Parliament not sit during November then? Will he still be paid?

I suppose he's hoping to be rehabilitated in to the public sphere.
