God I adore this woman! She is amazing!

For all those clinging to the frankly ridiculous myth that Labour will look after the poorest, please face reality. Rachel Reeves has said several times that Labour will crack down on benefits claimants and Kim Leadbetter was on Daily Politics yesterday saying that yes, difficult decisions need to be made but she'd feel better if Reeves and Starmer were carrying them out as if that makes a difference. I don't know about anyone else but I for one as a very poor person won't feel any better having my carer's allowance slashed by Reeves as I would by Hunt or whoever his equally useless replacement will be.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 20/10/2022 23:42

And you are fine with this?

Where have you read that I'm fine with it? Did I say that?

I'm just less fine with watching more people DIE due to cuts to benefits for the poor and disabled and to freezing my ass off this winter after two years of hiding in my home while my government had wine and cheese parties

Jess Phillips obviously knows her stuff though, and I think she’d be great to have as my MP - she seems as though she’d be like a dog with a bone if you had a problem and wouldn’t let it drop til she’d sorted it for you. But she’s so smug and condescending, always interrupting people that it really turns me away from her. She’s not going to convince anyone to agree with what she’s saying when she talks to them like that and doesn’t let them get a word in edgeways. She’s very showboat-y and sound bite-y. She needs to learn how to bite her tongue and actually listen to what someone’s saying, rather than shouting over them with quick jibes.

Is that not just politicians though? It takes a certain kind of personality.

I wouldn't want to be friends with any of them.

Shudders

So long as they get the job done.

Meh, I suppose that’s true. I do think you get the impression from some politicians though that they do actually care, that they are actually listening etc (whether they are or not is a very different matter, they’ve probably just perfected the skill of acting like it). I just think when you see her on panel shows, she’s constantly jumping in and talking over people - it just makes me cringe a bit, because what she’s saying most of the time is true, and the passion with which she says it inspires me and convinces me. It’s her attitude to other panelist’s/audience members’ views and what they’re saying that turns me off her.

Hiphopopotamus · 20/10/2022 20:31

FFS is it mandatory that you GC lot have to pop up with this ridiculous phrase on every political post? Talk about shooting yourselves in the foot and totally missing the issues that are actually affecting women.

Exactly.

I think Jess Phillips is great.

cakeorwine · 20/10/2022 20:28

You got that wrong.

A transwoman was murdered and her name was not read out.

But I suppose you didn't know that before you posted.

This didn't happen, it's been years since a trans woman was murdered in the UK. No-one was missed off the list.

Between 2008 and 2017 9 trans people were murdered. Naomi Hershei trans was murdered in 2018. There aren't any available stats since then, but you're wrong @RFPO77 . Don't be like Meghan Markle, don't lie about easily checked facts.

SiobhanSharpe · 21/10/2022 00:25

I'll answer the question several PPs have posed.
I will never vote Tory.
I was a Labour party member but cannot in all conscience vote Labour while the party is in thrall to gender ideology and has its leaders uttering craven idiocies because they're terrified of the backlash from TRAs and their followers..
Susan B Anthony said it better than me - "No self respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her sex."
Labour and the LibDems don't know or won't say what a woman is.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP)is sadly a spent force but if it fields a candidate in my constituency I will vote for them.
It is gender critical and among other things supports women's rights to safe spaces and opposes males taking women's places in sport, literary prizes, or being sent to women's prisons.

akabluebell · 21/10/2022 00:44

Jess Phillips was really good tonight. What does everyone think of Stella Creasy?

StClare101 · 21/10/2022 00:51

Women’s rights are a fringe issue now? Cool……

StClare101 · 21/10/2022 00:51

I think she has has absolutely no substance whatsoever.

MrJi · 21/10/2022 01:00

cakeorwine · 20/10/2022 20:25

Every year she reads out the names of women who have been murdered by men in the previous year.

How does she know whose names to read out when she can’t tell the sexes apart ?

CallieQ · 21/10/2022 01:16

Love her too
She should be PM!

endofthelinefinally · 20/10/2022 21:37

It is labour party policy. Stated clearly by Lisa Nandy in response to direct question. I know it is already happening all over the UK, worse in Scotland where they already have self ID, but at least the current government had started to address it. Labour won't stop it, they will progress to self ID.

We don’t have self ID in Scotland at the moment. Women and men here are determined that it won’t happen.
Jess Philips is rude, spineless and a coward. All bluster & sly comments but no substance.

Maltester71 · 21/10/2022 01:42

Lifelong tory voter here.

I’ll only vote Labour for Jess. She’s bloody marvellous. Her and Andy Burnham.

RhannionKPSS · 21/10/2022 01:47

electricdreaming · 20/10/2022 23:08

This 100%. If you are a feminist and care about women, how do you vote Tory? Are you more arsed about the trans debate than you are about women in poverty and what austerity (which is shown to hit women the hardest) has done to them? Do you care about the rights of migrant women, disabled women, queer women? I don’t understand how people can say they’re voting tory because they “know what a woman is” and think they’re a champion of women’s rights all whilst completely oblivious ignorant to what the Conservative party has done to various demographics of biological women. I understand the GC viewpoint and the arguments around it, but in real life I don’t care if a trans woman is on the same ward as me in hospital, so long as I can actually be seen by a doctor. I don’t care if a trans woman is in the women’s toilets if it means I can heat my house and afford to feed my family. I literally could not care less about trans women, I care about surviving and the most vulnerable in society being supported by a competent government.

PS I love Brooke Davis

How can disabled women have appropriate single sex care if trans identifying men are included in the definition of woman? How can survivors of rape get the help and care they need if trans identifying men are included in the definition of woman?
Queer is a slur just as bad as cis by the way.

RhannionKPSS · 21/10/2022 01:48

Oh and many, many migrant women need single sex services as well you should know.

Why don’t you ask Jess to read names out this year, I’m sure she would absolutely find the time...

Ndd135632 · 21/10/2022 02:18

The people on here who are saying it is a marginal issue clearly haven’t understood it or bothered to look into the enormity of it. One day the penny will drop.

^^this with bells on.

Most of us are disgusted with the Tories. Lots of us are worried sick about the cost of living and the economy.

But none of that makes it OK to trample on women's rights, and more than that, women's safety. There are incidences of females being raped in the women's toilets by trans identifying individuals. Women in prison are being sexually assaulted, but they don't count, right? Despite the fact that many women who are in prison are victims of poverty and there for drug-related offences - they probably deserve to be raped and sexually assaulted though, eh? Fuck them and fuck their human rights.

And the women who are already being pushed out of women's sports by men who were bang average in the male category but are streets ahead of females because of the biological advantage of having gone through a male puberty. But let's not worry about that either. Let's not worry about the female fighter who had her skull fractured by the trans identifying male who got in the ring with her and bragged about hurting a TERF. Let's not worry about our teen girls who are playing rugby against adult biological men. That'll probably all be fine too.

And the woman this week who asked a private hospital to ensure the nurses who looked after her in Intensive Care were all female because she was a sexual assault survivor (she was happy to have male doctors but wanted intimate care to be done by women). Well, she had her operation cancelled due to her unacceptable views and ended up very poorly in A&E. But fuck her too, eh?

It has taken decades of fighting and battling, of blood, sweat and tears for women to even remotely get something approaching equality. And now our places and our views are being spoken for by trans women who have no idea what it means to be a woman, no idea of the vulnerabilities we have compared to them. Yet again we're being silenced. We're being put at risk, we're being forced to accept male-bodied individuals as our rape counsellors because "their feelings". When do we count? When does our safety matter as much as a man's feelings? When does the future and safety of our daughters matter?

So much is being given away because we're told we must "be kind". And we'll never, ever get it back again. I'm not a mad conspiracy theorist, and my politics are left wing. But we are in such precarious waters right now, and so many of us are desperately lost politically.

Too many people are sticking their fingers in their ears and saying that it doesn't really matter. When they realise it does, it will be too late.

Ndd135632 · 21/10/2022 03:51

@SpidersAreShitheads you have joined the dots!

The people saying this is a marginal issue see it as only affecting trans people. Because they are a very small group - they see it as a marginal issue. They have not got their heads around the enormity of not being able to define and protect biological women as a group of people. That’s 51% of the population. A group of people who are biologically more vulnerable in general than the male sex.

I was all for being kind and open - and I of course wish that people with gender dysphoria get the help they need. But that shouldn’t be by destroying womens’ safety boundaries.

I do like Jess. She is a smart woman (I don’t have that praise so much for Nandy or Creasey who openly say that TWAW and trans rapists should be housed in woman’s prisons - either they are thick or unkind). I think Jess does have her head around this issue. But she doesn’t want to be marginalised like Rosie D. Jess is a front bench career politician who knows she will get fully chastised if she takes that position.

It is such a shame because she is so strong in fighting for women. I find it hard to reconcile how she can get up every morning knowing that self id will cause her to be reading out more names every year - because it will create the loophole violent men will jump through.

As an aside. I think Nicola Sturgeon is all for self id because it is different to what Westminster is doing. Either that or she has the bearded Green men puppeting her. Who knows.

I would love to vote for Labour. I am homeless. But I can’t until they get a grip on this issue. Labour was formed as a working man’s party and that runs through the DNA very strongly. Tony Blair gets it. Keir doesn’t.

Ndd135632 · 21/10/2022 03:53

@SpidersAreShitheads your last paragraph. Ouch. Agree. People are putting their fingers in their ears. Not bothering to dig in. And I am with you. I am terrified that when the penny does drop the damage will have been done.

HEAVE brave women of Scotland!

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 21/10/2022 06:15

You can call the class of people who do all of the caring for children "women" or you can call them 'people with uteruses" or fucking purple people eaters. But they're still the same group of people!

this might be the dumbest definition of the word woman I’ve ever seen. What about child free women?
